Do you like or dislike cliffhangers? Why or Why not?

I know a lot of you are going to disagree with me on this answer, but here goes... I LOVE cliffhangers!  An excellent cliffhanger makes me want to read the sequel ASAP!  Yes, it can be torture to have to wait to read the rest of that unbelievable story!  Especially, if you have to wait a year to read the next part, but isn't so exciting when you get the next book to the series in your hand? The anticipation just builds and builds until release day arrives!  I would equate it to a child having to wait a year for the holidays to arrive, but then being so excited to wake up to a Christmas Tree filled with gifts, just for them to open and explore.  I always mark my calendar with the arrival date of the books that I am most excited for, and once I have that book in my hands or on my e-reader, it makes me so happy, that it makes my day, and in some cases, even my week!

Oh boy...That's a loaded question...K here we go, I Dislike Cliffhangers.  Why?  Well, some are okay, bearable even, and some are crushing!  What's the difference?  The bearable ones are like, crap something serious this way will come, but, for the most part my beloved characters are fine, so I take solace in that.  I know the next book will deal with the current issues left at the end of said book.  The crushing ones leave me in a daze, one of which takes hours even days for me to snap out of. Those "brutal" cliffhangers leave a gaping hole in my heart, and if the next book isn't due out for more than a month its sheer agony.  If I enjoy a book, I create a bond with the characters within.  So, if a life is threatened, or a life altering revelation is made...well, I want to know RIGHT AWAY what happens next!  I get so wrapped up with my beloved characters I feel as though I MUST ensure all is well.  With a cliffhanger I don't, and it rattles me to the core.  Oh, another time cliffhangers are manageable are when I KNOW one is coming...Then I'm more prepared.

The Punchline
Even though I dislike cliffhangers it is not so strong as to keep me from reading a book. ;)  I hope y'all can agree with that... Laters ;)

Cliffhangers make me CRAZY!!!  I hate, hate, hate them... I can't stand waiting months till the next book comes out. It's TORTURE!!!  On the other hand, I love the fact of knowing that the ride isn't over yet.  I get so discouraged when a book is great, and has transported me to my next destination, and then leaves me teetering on a cliff, waiting to fall off... Either the sequel is going to take so long to come out, that I have to re-read the first book again, or there is no sequel at all!  Author's...Spare us this heart wrenching dilemma, Please?!  Give us more, we love it!  Don't leave us with an ending that has no closure, it's like sex without the big "O!"

  1. Haha I definitely am on the dislike side. In some books cliffhangers are more like leaving us hanging in the middle of a scene instead of real cliffhangers which come after. I am a total sucker for happy endings so I cannot bear cliffhangers though it does not stop me from reading books with them :) That is why if I'm not sure I end up reading the last page of the book first so that I can be prepared.

I knew through various friends that it had a bad cliffhanger...When I read it, I knew it was coming so the shock was more bearable ;)

  2. Can I love and hate them??? Because I do! I love a great cliffhanger that leaves me excited to know what will happen in the next book. One that makes me anxiously anticipate and has my mind conjuring up all kinds of scenarios that "could" happen. However, I hate them when I have to wait a whole year or MORE for the next book to come out! I feel like the long waits are the killer in the excitement of the cliffhangers. So yes, I both love and hate them

    4. Oh and you should read it because I am curious as to who you would cast for the characters! LOL, I think that's one of the reasons I love this blog so much...Ya'll have amazing posts but your cast choices are the best out of any of the blogs I have seen!

    5. Dione, I've been telling Ria she needs to read TCoCaK! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that book, and am dying to read the sequel. I was balling my eyes out at the end! Did you read my review on it?

    6. Dione!! Aww!! Thank you! The casting process is one of the funnest!! I fall in love with a character then I go through models and actors and one of them just speaks to me :) It's that AH-HA moment! I love it :)

    7. Lindy, I didn't read your review, BUT I will as soon as I'm done typing this comment!!! I am with you on the sequel. Although I'm so excited for the author that she signed a book deal it did push the release date back to an undetermined date which is WRECKING me! That ending of that book was enough to make me scream and cry and through a fit like a child!

    8. Yeah, at the end I was literally saying, No! No! No! Why did she end it like this?

  3. Lindy your crazy! Love cliffhangers? Haha.
I don't like cliffhangers if they are really evil ones, if I have to wait a LONG time for through sequel or if I wasn't expecting it.
I can handle it, if I have a heads up that it doesn't neatly wrap up at the end! Lol

    1. LOL! I know I'm in the minority on this :) I think it would be perfect if the timeframe between books was like 3 months. The only thing I hate is when I have to wait too long (like a year) for the next book. I just love the excitement, and anticipation that comes with getting the next book in a series that you are dying to read :)

    2. I understand what your saying... the anticipation can be exciting - but if authors have a long timeframe between the books I think readers can start to lose interest, 3 months is something I could handle, i think (:
