The Nightlife New York

GR's Summary:
Vampires, strippers, escorts, night clubs, gangs, pimps and corrupt cops, the Nightlife of New York is never boring.

Is she a beautiful blond guardian angel as he imagined, or something else entirely? When Michelle saves Aaron's life she shares the benefits of her blood (after getting him shot accidentally). He awakes a changed man, living in a purgatory of eternal night, never to see the sunrise again.

Michelle drags Aaron through a hardcore learning curve of vampiric slavery. Forced to adapt to servitude, Aaron is subject to her authority of compulsion. She orders him around like a puppet on a string, a dog on a very short leash. First things first, he must learn to feed properly without creating bloodslaves (humans addicted to the powerful drug-like effect of their venomous bite).

And then she puts him to work-a male escort in the sex trade-same as Michelle. Aaron walks a tightrope of strictly controlled feeding regiments and intensely erotic sexual adventures while catering to the neurotic control-freak tendencies of his new master. It's do or die, Michelle vows to eliminate him if he proves too difficult to control. The real kicker-amidst all these shocking and degrading adjustments, Aaron finds he's falling in love.

Can he maintain and keep a sliver of his humanity intact? Innocence is a luxury few can afford in the decadent nightlife of New York. In a world where sex, blood, and power over women is so readily accessible, Aaron struggles against the predatory instincts deeply rooted in his new psyche. He must find his way quickly, practicing rigid self-control, or risk the consequences of Michelle's wrath.

My Take on This Journey:

The Nightlife New York was a well rounded story filled with mystery, intrigue, sex, paranormal vampire mystique, love, lust, fantasy, and corrupt cops.  This was a page turner from the beginning to the end.  I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced read.  It was a fun story, with a unique take on gory erotic behavior.  It starts out with the main character, Aaron, who is a waiter trying to make a living.  He is miserable, and constantly used by his friend and roommate, Kyle, and his ex-girlfriend, Delia.  He can't seem to get Delia out of his mind, even though she is quite a self absorbed B****.

Aaron works at an Italian Restaurant, Bemichi's, with the boss from hell.    Bemichi,  his boss, is constantly reminding him not to fraternize with the customers, yet he has to deal with rich, older women sexually grabbing his wares, but he keeps his mouth shut in order not to make waves.  He just wants to do his job and go home to his lonely life.   One night Aaron is leaving work, and comes face to face with two crooked cops that are harassing the most beautiful woman he has ever seen in his life, Michelle, and she takes his breath away.  For the first time in his life, he stands up for someone, and in doing so, is caught in the cross-fire and shot.  In seconds Michelle beats the hell out of the two cops, that were trying to extort money from her, and worse.  Michelle, a vampire, decides at that moment, that Aaron will die if she doesn't feed him her blood.  She saves Aaron, and becomes his master, and he becomes her blood slave.  From that moment on, they are caught up in a whirlwind, lust-filled, blood-sucking romp.  The two of them can read each others minds, and they have supernatural abilities, and can do outlandishly crazy things with their bodies.  They are both quick on their feet, intentional in their moves, and on-alert to attack when necessary.

The sex scenes, that feature Aaron escorting women in this novel, are explicit, and outrageously descriptive.   Nightlife New York will get you caught up in the carnal pleasures of their escapades.  Michelle introduced Aaron to the escorting world, in order to get the blood they need to survive at night from innocent, unsuspecting, women.  They frequent shotty nightclubs, and bars, and give these women multiple orgasms with a suck in the neck. They mesmerize them with their eyes, but have to be careful not to suck too long, or they will make the intended a blood slave.   Aaron knows that he is in love with Michelle, from the beginning, while Michelle always has in the back on her mind the possibility of having to kill Aaron eventually, if he gets out of hand.    Aaron is completely enthralled with Michelle, and says that, "her blood is better than sex."  He thinks that until he has sex with her, then he can't get enough of her.   He realizes that he finally has a life worth living now that he has her, cause everyone else in his life has always let him down.  All he needed was her to feel complete, even if she could be sadistic and controlling at times.

At one point Michelle and Aaron connect on another level that brings them closer together than ever.  They let each other into the other's mind to see the hurtful, and demeaning things that have happened to them in their lives.  This novel will have you clearly seeing what the Nightlife in NewYork could really look like if this book was real.  This novel has a really good plot, and twists and turns, that will have you on the edge of your seats.  I recommend the Nightlife New York to paranormal readers that like a lot of spice in their reading.

I give The Nightlife New York a crazy, head turning, blood-thirsting 4 stars!

Gr’s summary
Love or life. Henry or their child. The end of her family or the end of the world. Kate must choose.

During nine months of captivity, Kate Winters has survived a jealous goddess, a vengeful Titan and a pregnancy she never asked for. Now the Queen of the Gods wants her unborn child, and Kate can't stop her--until Cronus offers a deal.

In exchange for her loyalty and devotion, the King of the Titans will spare humanity and let Kate keep her child. Yet even if Kate agrees, he'll destroy Henry, her mother and the rest of the council. And if she refuses, Cronus will tear the world apart until every last god and mortal is dead.

With the fate of everyone she loves resting on her shoulders, Kate must do the impossible: find a way to defeat the most powerful being in existence, even if it costs her everything.

Even if it costs her eternity

The Way I See it
Okay, I’m an emotional bucket of tears, sobs, longing, and wishing. What a great read! You all know I loved Goddess Interrupted, well the praise goes well into Goddess Inheritance. It was so intense. A. Carter continues to keep you strapped in, and turning the pages frantically. I did not want to put Goddess Inheritance down, and when I did, all I could do was think about the next time I would get to read it! Kate has never been a warrior, and she doesn’t become one over night, but her character development is perfect! She still made mistakes but, she finally started taking chances...I was just waiting for her “light bulb” moment and was so relieved when it came! Remember that crazy cliffhanger I talked about before? Boy oh boy, does Calliope ever do a doozy on us?! Heart wrenching, crazy, omg, I cried so much and I’m still crying but I won’t talk about it cause I want you to read it for yourself! However, I want to take a moment and tell everyone no matter what Cronus did, how many people he hurt I could not hate him. Maybe its the little “Kate” in me but I just couldn’t do it. Would you not one day become the darkness that surrounds you, if you were imprisoned in it for eons? If you answered no then you are purely and truly good. I don’t think I would want to rip the world apart but I also don’t think I would walk away the same. I love these characters so much! Henry hacked me off a bit in the second Goddess Test book but he more than made up for it in this one. I can honestly say with 100% conviction Henry loves Kate and that makes me happy, happy, happy. :) I don’t want to say goodbye I hope we get more of these fabulous characters...I distinctly remember James promising Kate something and Kate having a job to do...**fingers crossed?**

My Fav’s

Henry
He has been hurt in the past so it has hardened him. After the end of book two we know exactly how he feels. He doesn’t hold back, not once. Henry is determined to rip the world apart to ensure the safety of his family and will not stop at anything. All of my doubts of his love and fealty towards Kate are completely eradicated in this installment. A little part of me fell in love with him for it.

Ava
Goddess of Love the one thing she does best in this world is love. Ava has made some horrible mistakes. Trust me when I say, she spends every single day paying for them. Her love and care for Milo really cements Kate's gratitude. In the end Ava is put to the ultimate test and makes a tremendous sacrifice I never say coming! SHOCKING SHOCKER SHOCKER!!!

My Rating
4.5 Rhea, Kick a**, White Light, Beautiful Horizon, Piercing dagger, Eternal, Love Filled Stars! What a great book with great characters! Go and grab your copy!

Gr's Summary

Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

How Holder made me Swoon
He places his palm over my heart, then pulls my hand to his chest over his own heart. He lowers his eyes to my level, ensuring I’m here with him, giving him my complete attention. “Fu** all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.”

I kiss him. Holy sh*t, do I kiss him. I kiss him with every ounce of emotion that’s coursing through me. He cradles my head with his hand and lowers me back to the bed, climbing on top of me. “I love you,” he says. “Ive loved you for so long but I just couldn’t tell you. It didn’t feel right letting you love me back when I was keeping so much from you.”

Tears are streaming down my cheeks again, and even though they’re the exact same tears that come from the exact same eyes, they’re completely new to me. They aren’t tears from heartache or anger...they’re tears from the incredible feeling overcoming me right now, hearing him say how much he loves me.

“I don’t think you could have picked a better time to tell me you loved me than tonight. So I’m happy you waited.”

He smiles, looking down at me with fascination. He dips his head and kisses me, infusing my mouth with the taste of him. He kisses me softly and gently, delicately sliding his mouth over mine as he unties my robe. I gasp when his hand eases inside, stroking my stomach with his fingertips. The feel of his touch on me right now is a completely different sensation than just fifteen minutes ago. It’s a sensation I want to feel.

“God, I love you, “ he says, moving his hand from my stomach and across my waist. (Nook pg. 192)

This made me "Swoon," and cry, and fill with joy all at once. What did you swoon over this week?

Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4) by Abbi Glines

Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4)
By: Abbi Glines
Nook Edition, 197 pages
Published: October 30, 2012
By: Self-Published
Source: Purchased
Mature Content: 17 and Up

Goodreads Summary:

An insatiable attraction heats to the boiling point in this brand-new book set in the shore town of Sea Breeze, from bestselling author Abbi Glines.

Preston is one bad boy. And Amanda has harbored a crush on him for forever. When she finally makes her move on him, it does not end well. But still, she can’t resist him. Especially now that he seems to be pursuing her, too.

No one wants wants them to be be together. Not Amanda’s brother Marcus, who is on the verge of his marriage to Low, and definitely not any of Preston's buddies. They know way too much about Preston’s dark side. Yet the dangerous attraction is there...and neither Preston nor Amanda are going to deny it.

My Thoughts:

Just for Now, was the the fourth book in the Sea Breeze series by Abbi Glines. It was the story of Marcus' sister Amanda, and his best friend Preston. Amanda has harbored a secret crush on Preston since the age of 16.  Now that she's all grown-up, she wants him to notice her as a woman.  So she dresses sexy, flirts with him, and does everything she can to get him to not see her as a little girl anymore, and it works. Preston knows that he isn't good enough for Amanda. He has a reputation of being a womanizer, and has never been in a relationship. However, he can't help but fantasize about Amanda, and has to constantly fight his urges and attraction to her. Preston fears that he will hurt her, and hurt his best friend Marcus, her brother. Then, one night things go too far, and after that he just can't seem to stay away from her, and Amanda doesn't want him to.

What I enjoyed most about this book was getting to see another side of Preston. His mother is an alcoholic, and drug addict that goes from man to man. These men mooch off of her and mistreat Preston's siblings. Preston does everything for the kids. He buys groceries once a week, pays for their doctor, and dental visits, and extracurricular activities. He drives them to and from all of their appointments, and pays the rent and utilities for their mother's trailer. In the meantime, their mother is unappreciative of everything he does, and is disrespectful to him. She also says really mean things to the kids, and doesn't show them any love or affection. The mother's day consists of getting drunk, sleeping, taking off for days, and neglecting her children.  Preston remembers how horrible his childhood was and doesn't want the same things for his siblings. He used to live on bread and water, and if it hadn't been for Marcus bringing him a lunch to school everyday, he would have pretty much starved.  Amanda grew very close to the kids, and the kids in turn forged a special bond with her and knew that she was there for them if they needed her.  This is one of the many reasons that Preston fell in love with her.

Amanda matured a lot in this story. She didn't seem as young or dependent on her brother anymore, and she was willing to stand up and fight for what she wanted. She also had a huge heart, and we got to see her compassion a lot in this story. The way she doted on Preston's siblings, and nurtured Preston showed how warm-hearted she was.

I also loved how Abbi Glines incorporated all of the main characters from the other stories. We got to see bits of Jax and Sadie, Marcus and Low, Cage and Eva, and other minor characters that I am hoping will get their own story in upcoming books in the series. The reason why I enjoy this so much, is because when each book in the series ends, I miss the characters.  I love how Abbi finds a way for the reader to get to keep on learning about what is happening in the lives of our favorite characters.

I enjoyed, Just For Now and give it 5 super Smokin' Hot Stars! It had my emotions going up and down along with the plot. I have come to love and enjoy all of the characters in this story, and Preston and Amanda are no different. Abbi's biggest talent is creating believable characters that we come to love and relate to. We root for them to be successful, and cry when they're heart broken. This whole series is an excellent read and I highly recommend it!

Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins
Publishing Date:  April 30, 2013

Goodreads Summary:

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

Why I Can't Wait for Sweet Peril:

For those of you that have read Sweet Evil, I'm sure you understand why I want to read Sweet Peril NOW!  If you haven't read Sweet Evil yet, I highly, highly recommend it!  The reason that I want to read Sweet Peril so badly is that I want to experience the feelings and emotions that I experienced while reading Sweet Evil, and I want to see what happens with Anna and Kai!  Sweet Evil was so fun with all of the temptation, teasing, and major sexual tension between Anna and Kai.  Also, it was fun watching Anna be naughty and stray from her usual good image!  Even the secondary characters were interesting, and Sweet Evil had me reading until I finished it.  No breaks!  That is how amazing Sweet Evil was for me!  I'm just hoping that Sweet Peril delivers, because my expectations of this story being awesome are unbelievably high!

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

A Matter of Fate
By:  Heather Lyons
Published:  August 30, 2012
eARC, 423 Pages

Goodreads Summary:

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn't a normal teenage girl. She's a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she's a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she's to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That's nothing compared to the boy trouble she's gotten herself into. Because a guy she's literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Chloe's once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

My Thoughts:

Heather Lyons is an excellent storyteller.  I was completely immersed in this story, and the moment that I had to put the book down, I would think about what I had read.  I took advantage of every spare minute that I got, to pick up A Matter of Fate, and continue reading.

There were many aspects of this story that made me enjoy it so much.  First, I loved the fact that the story was unique and unlike anything I'd ever read before.  So many subjects and themes in the YA Paranormal market have been overdone.  I have read numerous stories about vampires, shape shifters, angels, etc.  It was nice to discover a whole new race of paranormal beings called, "Magicals."  Chloe, along with Jonah, Kellan, and numerous secondary characters in the story are magicals, and have various specialties and jobs chosen for them at birth.  Their life paths are mapped out for them, and the more important and powerful they are, the less control they have in their lives.  Chloe is the most powerful Magical there is, and is very resentful that fate has mapped out her whole life for her.  She is a Creator, and it is her job to both create and destroy on the councils (hand-picked higher ups) demand.  Identical twins Jonah, and Kellan are "Emotionals," and it is their job to create, intensify, and take away certain emotions of others.  The other magicals have jobs that include healing and bringing illness, seeking knowledge, inspiring art and music, nurturing the earth, causing natural disasters, and bringing peace and harmony, or cacophony.  Each magicals' job has a positive and negative aspect to it.  Even though they are born with a certain amount of power, they do not reach their full potential and full power until they ascend, which happens at age 18.

Another aspect I enjoyed in, A Matter of Fate, was the connections that I developed with the characters.  At first, I was worried that I would not remember all of the characters, because there were so many of them.  However, Ms. Lyons did an excellent job of making each character unique, interesting, and original enough that they each came to life for me.  Each personality, and "voice" was authentic and distinct in the story.  As for the fact that Chloe fell in love with identical twins, Jonah, and Kellan, I found it hard to choose a favorite.  Usually in stories that have a love triangle, I have one clear favorite.  The author usually helps the readers lean toward one character, who happens to be the best choice for the main character.  Well, there was no such luck here.  Jonah and Kellan were both amazing guys, with great personalities, and overwhelming love for Chloe.  They were both selfless with her, and would sacrifice their own happiness to make her happy.  The fact that Chloe couldn't make up her mind between which brother she wanted, might irritate some readers.  I even felt like telling Chloe, "pick one already, you're being selfish and hurting both of them, and they don't deserve that."  Yet the author made me understand the turmoil, and guilt Chloe was going through, and I felt sorry for her having to make such a difficult choice.  I enjoyed that the story kept me guessing till the very end which brother she would choose, and I do believe that she ended up with the right brother.

I also enjoyed the world-building in this story.  I could clearly picture the Mystical plane known as Karnach.  The author painted a beautiful picture of a thriving city full of elegance, grandeur, and style.  I pictured a Romanesque empire with old-world architecture.  The evocative imagery that Ms. Lyons created in my mind was enough to make me believe that Karnach could exist.  If I could travel there myself, I would love to see the city, and meet the various Elves, Goblins, Gnomes, Faeries, Dwarves and Magicals.

I highly recommend, A Matter of Fate, by Heather Lyons.  It is a unique and refreshing new story for the YA Paranormal genre.  There is magic, love, powerful and mythology-based antagonists, an action-packed plot, amazing characters, and an exceptionally well-written story.  If you enjoy the paranormal genre, I suggest you add this book to your TBR.  I guarantee you will enjoy your reading experience, and that you've read nothing like it!

My Favorite Quotes:

"Forgiveness is a tricky thing.  There are those who say it's easy-to hold onto wrongs is tiring, so forgiveness is a natural thing.  And then there are those who think forgiveness is a sign of weakness, that once a wrong has happened, to let that person back in is only asking for more hurt."  (epub, 396)

"Love isn't always clean and pretty-sometimes it's messy, cruel, and confusing.  And sometimes, it doesn't turn out the way you want it to.  But then, the beauty of love is that it's very strong, and when it's real, it's worth it."  (epub, 397)

"But today is all about this moment.  Because that's what life is really all about.  A series of moments strung together.  We do our best to deal with what we have at any given second."  (epub, 420)

My Rating:

I give A Matter of Fate 5 Magical and Fateful Stars!
