GR's Summary:

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her romantic thriller debut with this heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

Twenty-eight-year-old Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a bottle of Xanax and a handle of Maker’s Mark, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers secrets in the childhood lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man who Celine herself claimed would be her ruin.

On the hunt for answers that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Excerpt:

“I need some advice, Grady, and I have no one else to ask.”

“Shoot.”

“If you needed answers and the only person to give those to you was a person you didn’t know, had never met, and who might not like the questions you have to ask, what would you do?”

He twists his lips in thought. “I’d create a situation to meet this person, and make it hard for them to refuse me.”

Simple in theory…”But how?”

He exhales heavily, his warm breath grazing my cheek telling me that he’s facing me. “Find common ground. A location, a purpose, an acquaintance. Force the meet and then work your questions around the real ones that you want to ask. You can get a lot of information out of a person just by treading too close to what they don’t want to talk about. The look in their eye, their facial expressions, the way they react to the mention of a name, or a place.”

Grady seems more intelligent than what I’d expect of a pot-smoking building super. “You sound like you’ve been in my situation before.”

“Once or twice. Maybe.” I hear the smile in his voice.

Find common ground. Force the meet. The only common ground I have with this guy is now six feet underground in a San Diego cemetery.

Unless…

There is something that we’re both very familiar with.

I pull out my phone and scroll through my emails to find the one with her phone number. I know this is beyond inappropriate, but once I get something in my head, there’s no dislodging it. Plus, I’m high.

“Hello?”

“Hey Dani. It’s Maggie Sparkes.”

“Hi…Is everything okay?” She definitely sounds shocked to hear from me.

Grady watches me quietly. “I’m sorry to be calling so late. You know how you offered help with anything I needed? Well, I need a favor.”

Lindy's Thoughts:

Are you ready to become obsessed with a book?!!!  He Will Be My Ruin was a book I could not put down.  It was a binge read for me.  I was reluctant to take bathroom and food breaks, because I needed to keep reading.  K.A. Tucker has written a phenomonal story filled with mystery, suspense, intrigue and danger.

Maggie Sparks is devastated when she learns that her best friend Celine commited suicide.  Celine's mother asks Maggie to settle her deceased daughter's estate.  Once Maggie arrives in New York City she stays in Celine's old apartment, and begins the process of getting Celine's affairs in order.  However, as the little pieces of Celine's life come together, Maggie realizes that she did not know her best friend as well as she thought she did.

Evidence starts pointing to the possibility that Celine's death was a homicide, and when the detective on the case refuses to listen to Maggie's suspicions, she hires a private investigator.  Maggie finds herself involved with the people who were once closest to Celine; the lonely 80 year old neighbor, Ruby, Celine's sexy crush, Jace, Celine's good friend and a talented art appraiser, Hans, and the friendly building super Grady.  Unforunately, the closer Maggie gets to uncovering the truth of what occurred the night of Celine's death, the closer she draws herself in to the very danger that her best friend faced.

He Will Be My Ruin begins in the present, where Maggie has been abducted, tied up, and put into someone's trunk.  She knows that she is going to die at the hands of the person who killed Celine.  Then, the story travels to the past and alternates between Maggie uncovering clues about her friend's life and death, as well as journal entries written by Celine.  I felt as if I was right there with Maggie searching for clues, suspicious of everyone, and trying to put pieces of a puzzle together, that took us in two different directions.

My Rating:

I give, He Will Be My Ruin, by K.A Tucker, 5 Blood Pumping, Heart Racing, Adrenaline Rush Filled Stars!  If you enjoy an excellent murder mystery filled with fast paced suspense, seduction, and unpredictable twists, read this story!

Keep On Guessing You’ll Never Get It

MOVE OVER Discovery ID…Tucker is in the house and she has brought the magic!! Seriously Cereal…This is going to knock your socks off. I can’t take it Tucker NAILS this so hard my head is still spinning!!! There is something truly special about the way Tucker captivates the reader from the first page to the last. This was unlike anything of hers I’ve ever read and I assure you regardless of your favorite genre this read will grab you and never let go. Even though I’ve read it and I should have put it behind me and moved on…I CANT this one is going to stick with you and break all of the traditional boundaries. Seriously I recommend this read for anyone. Regardless of your favorite or usual genre this book…THIS BOOK will CAPTIVATE you!!!

The Story, there is a murder and Celine’s best friend has come to manage her estate. As an avid collector and treasure hunter she has amassed a large amount of wonderful finds. Maggie knows her best friend would never commit suicide but she has to piece the puzzle together one at a time. Everything point to the obvious but the obvious is far from the truth. Get ready to guess from beginning to the very end. There are so many twists and turns your eyes will go wonky with all of up and down. I would say guess if you must bur it doesn’t matter…whatever you think will most definitely be wrong!! Tucker shows her masterful story telling abilities with this one. GET READY!! No you can’t ever be ready for this but I recommend everyone gives it a try.

The Characters, Maggie is absolutely wonderful. She comes from a prestigious family with plenty of wealth to last her forever. Maggie has a different vision for her life. Lead by the passion in her heart she will try to save the world one village at a time. Upon being faced with her best friend’s death Maggie will have to pause her dreams to find out what truly happened to Celine. After the worlds most up and down rollercoaster. Maggie will come so close to proving what has been nagging her from the beginning. I want to talk about everyone else but I cannot I dont’ like giving away spoilers so…just know everyone sucks.

The End, BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!! I never saw this coming well played Tucker, well played. I want to recommend this read to EVERYONE EVER!!! I’m not big on mysteries but I am big on Tucker. Anything she writes I will read! I have such faith based on her talent I know I will never be disappointed. One thing I do want is an HEA for Maggie…I hope we get that soon,.. perhaps with someone with a lovely Australian accent?

Mikki's Review:

I have read almost every single book that K.A. Tucker has written. I'm only missing her Casual Enchantment series, but I will get to it very soon. I love her writing style and I was excited to read He Will Be My Ruin. This is a really different book compared to the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series. Expect to be transported into a suspenseful world of secrets, lies, mystery and betrayal. If you have never read a book by this author, I highly recommend that you start with this one. For the people that have read her previous series, don't expect the dose of romance that we usually find in her books. This is an adult suspense filled with many twist and turns that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

Celine's suicide comes as a surprise to Maggie Sparkes. They have been best friends for many years and when she receives the devastating news she travels to New York to attend her funeral. During that time she stays in Celine's old apartment so that she can take care of all her personal belongings. Maggie discovers Celine's diaries and what she learns about her best friend leaves her with many unanswered questions. As days go by, Maggie is determined to do whatever it takes to find out who killed her best friend. Even if that means putting her life in danger.

I have to admit that I don't read many suspense books. I gave this book a try because I'm a big fan of K.A. Tucker. I have set myself a goal this year to read as many books as possible that are out of my reading comfort zone. I need to jumble my genres because I am seriously missing out on many amazing books. This book was a rollercoaster ride of emotions that did not end! I felt like was a part of the story and I wanted to solve the mystery of Celine's death before I could read what really happened to her. I kept on changing my mind on who was guilty. It.was.driving.me.NUTS.!!!!!! What is revealed about Celine's death left me speechless!!

Maggie was an intriguing character. She was determined to find out who killed her best friend. She was positive that this was not a suicide and she was going to do everything in her power to bring justice to this case. This story is told in Maggie's POV, but we do get to read many entries from Celine's diary. With these entries, we get to know who the real Celine was. My heart broke for Maggie when she read those diaries. I wanted to reach into the book and give her a hug. To find out that your best friend is hiding so much secrets is just devastating. The past fifteen years of Celine's life leave Maggie flabbergasted.

The secondary characters in this story have all an important role to play. They all had something to bring to this story and that made it that much more intriguing. I have to admit that at one point of the story I was thinking to myself that all these people could be guilty. Well, except for the police and the private investigator that Maggie hired. K.A. Tucker wrote a fantastic suspenseful reading journey that will leave you wanting more! I highly recommend any book by this author. Her writing style will captivate you from beginning to end!

My Rating:

I give, He Will Be My Ruin, by K.A. Tucker, 4 intriguing, page-turning, captivating, mystery filled stars!

Full Circle…The Way It Was Meant to Be

What in the WORLD?! Oh my goodness I’ve been looking forward to this read for quite some time!! Disclaimer I am a FAN a HUGE FAN of Mrs. Carter of the Goddess books and of these books!!!! Okay so the second book fell a bit flat for me but in this installment all is well. From the very beginning I knew it would grow in awesome with every page it did just that. Kitty did everything I wanted to do Knox and even Benjy don't get me started on Greyson TO DIE FOR. Seriously there were some things I would have done differently but i’m here to love rant!!

The Story, this picks up right after the events of the last book. I was like way to excited for my own good when I picked this one up. Let me tell you it was WA WA WAYYYYYY worth the wait. Something has changed in Kitty and she is more than ever determined to make things right with her country. Get ready for a crazy up and down ride that is going to keep you guessing.

The Characters, Kitty yay she’s grown up quite a bit and I’m so proud of her. Knox yahoo finally!!! Yeeesh though I must be honest when I say I wanted more! Benjy finally realizes whats up and he does what it takes. I wish I could go into this more but I’d hate to be spoilery.

The End, MORE more MORE!!! I wanted so much more but i’d be lying if i said I was unhappy with the way things ended. Change is in the horizon sacrifices have been made and things look generally good. The things that were supposed to happen from the very beginning have. The one major difference is Kitty…She is now a permanent fixture the whole country is proud of. Bravo Carter!! Nailed it!!

My Rating
5.0 yep thats 100% fan girl based…I just hope we get a novella cause I WOULD DIE!!!

My Thoughts:

Dare to Run is the first book in the all new, The Sons of Steel Row Series.  I was attracted to the cover, book blurb, and the fact that Jen McLaughlin was the author.  I have read a few of her books, and really enjoyed them.  Dare to Run was a story filled to the brim with suspense, danger, conspiracy, betrayal, and passion.  It was a great read, and I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Lucus Donahue has grown up in the gang lifestyle.  He has been a part of the Sons of Steel Row, since he was a teenager, and needed to raise money to support a terminally ill single mother, and younger brother.  Lucus deals illegal arms in the slums of Boston.  Freshly out of incarceration, he finds himself back in the midst of the dangerous lifestyle of a gang member.

Unfortunately, Lucus' life has gotten complicated when he learns that his younger brother, Scotty, is conspiring to kill him, in order to get Lucus' powerful promotion in the gang.  To top it off, he stops beautiful bartender, Heidi Greene, from getting raped by a rival gang, resulting in another enemy gunning for him.  Now, Lucus has taken Heidi under is protection.  Will these two survive such violent and dangerous enemies?

Dare to Run had two main characters that I enjoyed getting to know.  Heidi was a feisty, brave, independent, and strong-willed woman.  She didn't let her fear show, and I loved her gutsy personality.  Lucus was very closed off, stoic, and non-trusting.  However, he was loyal, and even though he considered himself to be a bad man, we get to see little by little, that he is a good man that has just made some very bad choices.  Together, these two had intense chemistry that turned into so much more.  Heidi was able to get Lucus to pull down his walls, and bring out a side of himself that he had never experienced before.

The story plot was unpredictable, and delivered a shocking and hugely surprising ending!  When you read a lot, it's easy to predict the sequence of events in a story.  So, I was excited to get a story that caught me completely unaware.

My Rating:

I give, Dare to Run, by Jen McLaughlin, 4 Engaging, Dangerous Suspense, Passion turns to Love, Conspiracy Filled Stars!  I'm looking forward to seeing if Ms. McLaughlin can surprise me again in the sequel, Dare to Stay.
