Goodreads Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can't admit to seeing?

Lindy's Thoughts:

When I saw, A Shimmer of Angels, I was attracted to the beautiful cover with the girl on it, and loved how ethereal and magical it looked.  Then I read the synopsis, and knew that this was a book that I needed to read!  I really enjoy the YA
Paranormal genre, and am especially drawn to stories about angels.

The story begins with 16 year old Ray, short for Rayna, who has a gift, or a curse depending on how you look at it.  She can see angels.  The first time she saw an angel occurred after her mother's death.  Her father is convinced she is schizophrenic, and consequently, she's been in and out of the Sunflower Serenity Mental Health Clinic, or the SS Crazy as she calls it for 3 years.  Finally, Rayna is released from the institution, and allowed to return to her normal life.  Unfortunately, she returns home to her suspicious dad, and resentful 12 year old little sister, Laylah.  She gets to attend high school with her best friend Lee, and decides to apply for a job at "all-American Roxy's Diner."  All she wants is to get "better," and live a normal life. Rayna is hallucination free for six months, and then she sees a pair of wings, and her life is turned upside down.

A Shimmer of Angels began at a slow pace for me, and I found it difficult to delve into the story right away.  I felt like the plot took some time to really develop, there was a lot of description, and not a lot of action going on.  Still I stuck with the story, and I'm glad that I did.  The character development in the story was really good.  I had a clear understanding of the characters.  The main characters, Ray, Cam, and Kade were written in such a way, that I could visualize their physical appearance, the way they dressed, acted, and spoke.  Each individual character in A Shimmer of Angels had unique, and distinct personalities, and I loved watching them come to life.

The plot of the story was intriguing!  I enjoyed the mystery behind major events that took place in the story.  I enjoyed trying to figure out who were the good guys, and who were the villains.  Also, I was captivated by the gorgeous and angelic golden boy Cam, and swooning over the sexy bad boy/fallen angel Kade.  I don't envy Ray's predicament of having to chose between these two!  Although, I'm personally rooting for the bad boy.  I enjoy his sexy ways and the way he teases Ray with his seductive charms.  It was entertaining navigating between all of the twists and turns in this story.  I enjoyed the surprises contained in A Shimmer of Angels, as I am not a reader that enjoys predictability in a story.

If you enjoy YA stories from the Paranormal genre, specifically books that include angels, I would check out, A Shimmer Of Angels.  Fans that are suffering from the completion of the Fallen Series by Lauren Kate, and Hush Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick should read this book.  If you want a book that contains likable characters, mystery, plot twists, romance, and two swoon worth angels within its pages, this is the book for you!  I give A Shimmer of Angels, a Shimmering 3 stars!

My Favorite Quote:

"The thing about beliefs?  Even the strongest can be shattered by the simplest of things." (Kindle, Loc. 45)

                                                Escape in a book,

The Way Ria Sees It

Okay I had a really good feeling about this book from the start. I loved the setting San Fran! When Lisa M. Basso talks about the city I can truly see the buildings and the hustle and bustle surrounding the city. Lets say that Ray has a lot of room to grow, she’s had a really rough time with her ability to see things others don’t so it has been very difficult for her. She has worked really really hard to overcome the crazy but when she is faced with it again it seems to really tear her down, it kind of breaks my heart. I want Ray to absorb all that she is and embrace the inner power I just know she has. Clearly she is special that she can see these beings I want for her to realize just how special she truly is. We come to certain revelations by the end of the book! I really am very curious to see where these characters go because the sky is the limit...Can’t wait for their story to continue

My Fav’s

Shelly
Here is someone who is full of life, fun and just a little crazy. It seems like she is the only person who sees passed Rays jitters, jumps, drops, spills, breaks and shakes. Shelly was able to get through to Ray, to embrace life and go for it and go for it a lot. The only thing that would have made me like Shelly more is if she had a stronger presence in the book. I felt a real connection to her right away...I was sad to see her go.

Kasade

Has the most lovely wings imaginable he is NOT the bad guy just a bad boy...Draws the ladies right? Lol, well not only is he willing to put himself in an absolutely harmful situation for Ray, but he looks great doing it. I will go ahead and say that I am team Kade all the way. Alas, as it is in most cases, Ray will probably end up with Cam, especially since she has already admitted he has her heart. Don’t worry Kade I’ll be here to pick up the pieces.

My Rating

3.25 Dreamy creamy chocolatey eyes attached to super studly Kade stars!! Read this book so you too can start seeing Angels.
