GR's Summary:

Desperate times call for daring measures as Honor Cabot, the eldest stepdaughter of the wealthy Earl of Beckington, awaits her family's ruin. Upon the earl's death she and her sisters stand to lose the luxury of their grand home - and their place on the pedestal of society - to their stepbrother and his social-climbing fiancée. Forced to act quickly, Honor makes a devil's bargain with the only rogue in London who can seduce her stepbrother's fiancée out of the Cabots' lives for good.

An illegitimate son of a duke, George Easton was born of scandal and grows his fortune through dangerous risks. But now he and Honor are dabbling in a perilous dance of seduction that puts her reputation and his jaded heart on the line. And as unexpected desire threatens to change the rules of their secret game, the stakes may become too high even for a notorious gambler and a determined, free-spirited debutante to handle.

My Take on this Journey:

The Trouble With Honor, by Julia London, was a historical romance about a young girl named Honor Cabot.  Honor was a gutsy, incorrigible, head strong heroine for her day and age. Honor is self serving, pushy, impetuous, scheming, and brazen.  Honor makes her friends take her to a men's gaming house packed with women of the night, and makes a bet that no respectable men will take.  The only one that takes a bite is the illegitimate son of a duke, George Easton.  George is wealthy, a gambler, risk taker, and known casa nova. Honor, in her self righteousness, beats the gambler at his own game, and leaves him stunned and curious.

Honor is the step-daughter of the dying Earl of Beckington.  She is the eldest daughter of four sisters, and has a mother that is succumbing to mental illness due to an accident in a carriage.  Honor is afraid that upon the death of the Earl, she, her sisters, and mother will be thrown out into the streets to fin for themselves, lose their standing in society, and their illustrious mansion.  Since the Earl took them in as his own, they have no rights to any of the inheritance, and Honor is afraid that her step-brother, Augustine, will listen to his evil fiance, Monica, and get rid of them, take their considerable allowances away, and put their mother away for good!  Honor coerces the devil himself, George Easton, to work with her by seducing Monica, to get her out of the way, so Augustine will find another woman, and her troubles will be gone even though she knows it will break her step brother's heart.

Honor is very self-absorbed and immature.  She only worries about herself, though she says it's for the good of her family.  She reminded me of Scarlet O'Hara in Gone with the Wind.  She was very self serving.  As the story moves along, the reader realizes that Monica is actually a wise, caring woman.  Honor humiliates herself at the gambling house when her scheme falls through to put George on the spot to marry her in front of everyone, and he leaves her high and dry.  Her reputation is at stake now that she has let George take her V-card and doesn't want to do the proper thing by marrying Honor.  Though Honor has no intentions of ever reducing herself to marriage, is never proper, she now decides she wants it with George, since he has the means to keep her living in the life style she is accustomed to living.

Honor works her wiles in an evil game of seduction, to always leave herself coming out on top, get her way at any cost, but this time she may have over stepped her bounds.  This was a steamy flight of fancy, with great characters and definitely a throw back novel.  Historical Romance is always interesting.  Especially to see how things were so long ago, in days long past.  I enjoyed the pigheadedness of the two main characters, the scheming, lustful scenes, and the ever charming George Easton.  He was definitely another Rhett Butler type of character.  Ms. London did a great job with the prose and story line.

    1. I did also. Honor is quite an independent woman. Yet, she still wants to be taken care of in the lifestyle she is accustomed to, just like Scarlet. George is a no nonsense man, except when it comes to Scarlet. She can weasel almost anything out of him, just like Rhett. Thanks for commenting.

  11. Thanks for drawing the analogy to Scarlett and Rhett in GWTW. That gives me a much better idea of the relationship between Honor and George and the motivations behind Honor's actions.

  12. Sounds like Honor wasn't living up to her name! Also sounds a bit unlikable. But I'm guessing the back and forth between her and George is fun to read. I didn't see snark in there, but I am sure in some form, there must be snark for Honor to keep coming out on top. So glad you enjoyed this novel. Bet it was a lot of fun!

  14. Thanks for the review! I always enjoy it when the author doesn't make the heroine perfect and on a pedestal. It'll be nice to see how Honor gets herself in and out of situations and how she grows as a person as the story progresses! And Julia London's always got a great writing style that I enjoy!
