GR's Summary:

When she lost it all, Jess decided to cope by living a lie. But you can’t keep on pretending forever…

Twenty-one-year-old Jess used to have everything—a loyal best friend, a boyfriend she loved, and a future that was right on track. But in a single night, her whole world changed.

Now, Jess lives for the impersonal connection of drunken hook-ups and to-go coffee cups in the morning. All she needs is one night to pretend everything is fine…until she meets Adam.

Thanks to a sports injury, gorgeous, charming basketball star Adam Carson is stuck in physical therapy at the hospital where Jess interns—giving her the perfect opportunity to see his sweet, considerate nature and making her realize that maybe she does want something more.

But while Adam might be the best thing that’s happened to Jess in a long time, letting him past her carefully constructed walls means letting him know what happened...and why he'd never want her for more than one night.

My Thoughts:

One Night is the first book I've read by A.J. Pine and I really enjoyed it.  This story was told soley from the leading female character, Jess' perspective.  We learn that something heartbreaking occurred in her life, which resulted in her break-up with her long-term serious boyfriend Bryan and the disintegration of the friendship with her former roommate and best friend, Ashley.

Ever since that fateful event, Jess keeps to herself.  She  avoids relationships, and has frequent hook-ups, so that she can be held in someone's arms, and not wake up alone.  Her new roommate, Zoe, seems like an easygoing person, but Jess keeps her distance.

Jess is currently working at the local hospital as a P.T. intern.  One day she meets, Adam Carson, star college basketball player, who is currently undergoing physical therapy for a serious knee injury.  As Jess begins to work with Adam frequently, they share a mutual attraction, and develop a friendship.  It becomes evident that Adam wants more than friendship from Jess, but is it possible for her to let her guard down, and take a chance on love?

I thought that I had figured out what made Jess so adamant against having a serious relationship.  Was I ever wrong!  When I found out what had happened, it came as a surprise to me, and I was so happy that the situation wasn't a predictable one.  Adam's character won me over right away.  He was so sweet, charming, easy going, and had a positive light about him.  Jess, had a lot of angst, turmoil, loneliness, and pain.  I loved how Adam found a way to make her smile, laugh, and let down her guard by just being himself.  No matter how difficult Jess was, Adam didn't give-up on her.

I also loved Jess' roommate Zoe, who was a spirited, strong, loyal, and supportive friend.  Even though it was clear that she had her own burdens to deal with, she was still there for Jess.  I would love for Zoe to get her own story!  Another great character, was 13 year old patient, Regan.  I loved this sweet and vibrant girl!  Ms. Pine's cast of characters were well-developed and very likeable.

My Rating:

I give, One Night, by A.J. Pine, 4 Heartbreaking, Healing, Sweet Romance, New Beginning Filled Stars!  I'm really looking forward to continuing this series, and we get Zoe's story next!

About A. J. Pine:

AJ Pine writes stories to break readers’ hearts, but don’t worry—she’ll mend them with a happily ever after. As an English teacher and a librarian, AJ has always surrounded herself with books. All her PineAuthorPicfavorites have one big commonality–romance. Naturally, her books have the same. When she’s not writing, she’s of course reading. Then there’s online shopping (everything from groceries to shoes) and, of course, a tiny bit of TV where she nourishes her undying love of vampires, from Eric Northman to the Salvatore brothers. And in the midst of all of this, you’ll also find her hanging with her family in the Chicago burbs. AJ’s debut NA novel, IF ONLY, is out now with Entangled’s Embrace line, with a companion novel, WHAT IF, releasing December 8, 2014. Next year look for her new duo of NA books, ONE NIGHT and ONE LIFE with Penguin/Intermix.

  1. I haven't read her books yet either. Oh, I can feel her pain through your review. I really want to know what broke her and I want to meet Adam and Zoe who helped her become whole again. Another for the wish list!

  2. It's great when you read a book and you fall in love with the secondary characters who turn out to get their story next. That's happened to me a few times before and although I still enjoyed the book, I looked forward to the next one more. Great review. I hope Zoe's book lives up to your expectations.

  3. So love it when a book can surprise you! Great review.
