GR's Summary:

In this new Love Under the Big Sky series from a USA TODAY bestselling author, Cara agrees to tutor her former classmate's nephew—and learns some lessons in love!

Josh King is an expert at running his family’s multi-million dollar ranch in Montana. (And all that outside manual labor has done wonders for sculpting his six-foot-three body, too.) But as sure footed as he is when it comes to the ranch, Josh doesn’t know anything about how to deal with an adolescent boy—so when his twelve-year-old nephew, Seth, is dropped off on his doorstep, looking scared and acting surly as hell, Josh knows he needs help in straightening him out.

Cara Donovan loves her quiet life as a teacher in her sleepy hometown, so she jumps at the chance to make a little money over the summer as a tutor. But when she learns she’ll be teaching Josh King’s nephew, Cara’s sweet summer job gets a little bit hotter. Cara tries to focus all her attention on tutoring Seth, but Josh proves to be a delicious distraction, while Josh’s memories of the shy girl he once teased in high school are nothing like the beautiful woman he’s facing now. Can he persuade her that there’s more between them than a summer fling?

Love Under the Big Sky Series:

My Thoughts:

Loving Cara, is the first book that I've read by Kristen Proby.  I've heard great things about Ms. Proby, and was excited to read a story written by her.  Based off of the book cover, I was expected a sweet and romantic, old fashioned romance, with a hot cowboy.  This was the love story of Josh and Cara, told in their alternating perspectives.  The story began with Kensie (Josh's identical twin brother, Zach's, wife), abandoning her 12 year old son Seth, by dropping him off on the family ranch.  She then let's Zach's family know that Seth is their problem now, she's getting a divorce, and moving on with a man that doesn't want any kids.  Kensie instantly made me angry, and I could tell right away that Josh, and his parents were great people.  They tried to reassure Seth that the Ranch was his home, and he was welcome.  Seth was full of anger, which came as no surprise, and had been brainwashed by his mother that his father did not love him.

Unfortunately, Seth flunked out of all of his school subjects, so Josh, went through the middle school to hire a tutor for him for the summer.  He is completely caught off guard when he learns that Cara is his nephew's tutor.  Cara and Josh went to high school together, and Josh had remembered her as a sweet, but plain girl.  However, Cara has blossomed in to a knock-out.  Cara had a crush on Josh all of her years in high school, and is still strongly attracted to him when she see's him.  As Cara spends the summer tutoring Seth, the two grow closer, and she finds a way to connect with him, and help him with school, and life in general.  Also, Cara and Josh's attraction and feelings for one another intensify as they embark on the fast track for falling for one another.

The first half of the story was a bit slow for me.  I enjoyed the storyline between Seth, Josh, and the rest of the family.  Seth was my favorite character, and my heart really broke for him.  As far as Cara and Josh's relationship, I had a few problems with it.  For one, the two of them fell in love rather quickly.  I didn't feel like their relationship was very well developed.  It was pretty much, insta-love, and then insta-sex.  However, the sex scenes were pretty steamy!  This story was sweet, with very little angst.  On one hand, it was enjoyable to not have a lot of obstacles, but on the other hand, I think that the story could have used a bit more excitement.  I enjoyed the small town community, Josh, and Zach's parents, and the friendships in this story.  Cara's best friend Jill was a fun and humorous character that I really enjoyed.  The chemistry that Jill and Zach shared has me very interested to read their story.  I look forward to learning more about Jill's older brother, and Josh's best friend, Ty, as well as, Cara's ex- enemy, Lauren!

My Rating:

Overall, Loving Cara, by Kristen Proby was a predictable, sweet, and low-angst story.  I enjoyed the small sense of community in Montana, the close knit family, and friendships.  I would have enjoyed more character and relationship development, as well as a bit more excitement.  I give, Loving Cara 3 Hot Montana Cowboy Filled Stars!

  1. My review for this posts on Monday, and I pretty much feel the same. Well, I think I was a little more annoyed than you. lol The story souls have definitely used more development. The idea was good, though.
    Excellent review, Lindy!
