Synopsis

Kate Miller has been having recurring dreams about the same man . . . a dead man. Will Hawke, to be exact, a celebrity who died long before Kate had any reason to pay attention to celebrities.

While the night-world she enjoys with Will beckons, her waking world has suddenly gotten intriguing. Ty Watts--a guy with looks that could set a thousand housewives free--just walked into her life. He's got a smile and a secret that begs to be found out.

But is Ty a distraction or a savior?

Kate's dreams threaten to take over. She must negotiate the edge of reality, solve the mystery of her nightly rendezvous with Will and either set him free or lose herself forever in the seductively dangerous world he inhabits.

A Boat Made of Bone is a love story that spans worlds, generations, and reaches beyond death into the realm of fantasy.

My Review:

A couple of months ago, I found the cover of A Boat Made of Bone by Nicole Grotepas on my FB news feed. I was captivated by it and I wanted to know what kind of story was attached to that cover. I added it on the spot to my TBR list when I read the blurb. Even if it's not my genre, I must admit that I enjoyed it.

In A Boat Made of Bone we follow the story of Kate Miller. Kate's life is far from being boring. Every night she dreams about a man. A mysterious stranger that makes her heart beat fast. Night after night she is transported into his world. With Will she feels safe and loved. There is nowhere else that she would rather be. There is only one problem ... He's dead. Kate has mixed emotions about her dreams. Why is this happening to her? How can she feel so connected to somebody in her dreams? Will she ever be able to move on with her life and forget about Will? She wants to live in her dreams, but when reality checks-in and Ty enters her life, she is torn between what she wants. She embarks on a journey in which she discovers an intriguing world that she never knew existed. She will have to decide if she wants to follow her dreams or stick with reality.

Going into this book I had no expectations. Like I said before it's not my usual genre so I wanted to read something different and step out of my comfort zone. One thing I look for whether it's my usual genre or not, it's the connection I have with the characters. Kate is the main character in this story and I'm sad to say that I only connected with her when I reached the 65% mark in the story. Even though it took me a while to connect with her I still enjoyed her story. The first part of the book was slow-paced, but once I reached the 50% mark I really felt that the story was coming alive. I could understand a bit more of this fantasy world that took place in her dreams. I really liked Will and Ty. They are both enjoyable characters and I could see that they both cared for Kate. They both had secrets to hide and I guess we will find out more about these secrets in the second installment of this saga.

Overhall the writing style was really good and I could easily imagine how Necropolis/Chthonos looked like. I'm not sure I would want to be stuck there ... lol!! It's a scary world! Even if there are some things that I did not connect with, I look forward to reading more about this saga. I'm sure that the next book will answer some of my questions, and I'm really intrigued to see what direction this story will take.

My Rating:

I give, A Boat Made of Bone, by Nicole Grotepas 3 enjoyable stars!

About the Author

Nicole wrote her first fantasy novel in 7th grade on her mother's old Brother typewriter. It was never finished but it strongly resembled a Dragonlance plot and she's forever wondered what happened to the manuscript and Tonathan--the handsome elven protagonist. After living in Nashville where she worked as an editor, she returned to the Utah desert where she was raised. Nicole now lives near the Wasatch mountains with her husband. She writes and raises her son and three cats full time.
