Braxton, 1903. The serial killer known only as the Phoenix continues to roam the streets and a new victim falls prey. For Moira and Detective Keenan Edwards, still on the hunt for the Phoenix, the rules have changed. The killer remains beyond their grasp.

Moira is willing to give into her fierce attraction to Keenan. However, the detective proves to be more reluctant despite a moment of heated passion. Then discovery of a secret Keenan never planned to share creates an unwelcome rift between the new lovers.

Keenan isn’t the only one hiding something. In this continuation of the Memory Collector series, Moira makes a startling disclosure about her past. This revelation will not only test the boundaries of love, but might also prove to be the clue that will finally unravel the mystery of the Phoenix.

My Most Favorite Pawn Indeed!

Happy, happy, Happiest DANCE!! Okay okay…Let me cease my gushing. First off what a kick butt cover huh? Totally rock star status. You all must know Pawn of the Phoenix was on my most anticipated reads that’s a big deal guys! Let me just say life is full of disappointments and I am totally overjoyed with the fact that my anticipation for this book was NOT one of them! Gosh this was almost a perfect read!!! ALMOST!! McLachlan really delivered…So close to 5 stars that my anticipation for the next is even more heightened. When I jumped into this book I was thrown back into the mystery and wonderful aura that set the tone for adventures to come. This picks up right after the first I thought the beginning was a tiny bit slow. Don’t worry though it doesn’t last right at 30% I could not put it down and I was back into the characters and completely caught up with everything that was happening all around. McLachlan is truly talented and I can’t wait to see what happens in the final installment because I know its going to be great.

The Story, the Phoenix is still on the loose Moira(Love that Name!) and detective Keenan begin to do the tango of wills and desires. The rules of the game have changed and the looming threat is ever present in everyone’s life. Moira knows something needs to be done to find the empath causing all of this chaos but she doesn’t trust. One thing is certain as people are murdered and replaced change is in the horizon. The elite have her under their thumb but she begins to change. Keenan has rubbed off on her and she seeks justice for the innocents that have served as pawns and perished because of it. The mystery is intense and two major questions are answered. Keenan’s past comes crashing into the forefront and Moira discovers something about herself that will change everything. I know McLachlan has some major magic up her sleeve and she is going to release all of that awesomeness in the next book! I can’t wait!

The Characters, Moira grows immensely in this installment. She has been through so much pain since she was a young girl and those scars run very deep. Though she doesn’t trust, something fundamental happens, she begins to truly empathize with those that have lost everything. Determined to make a change and bring justice Moira’s character really grows for the best. She has feelings for Keenan that started as just an attraction but have morphed into so much more. Though her feelings are strictly forbidden something about his person pulls at her heart and guides her into his arms. She is not perfect, far from it in fact she makes several mistakes. One that turns out to be a blessing but the other could mean the very end of everything she has worked so hard to obtain. Keenan, still aloof and still super dreamy in this installment we see a side to him that is very surprising. He too isn’t perfect but we see his fire for justice and his immeasurable perseverance for discovery. He has worked very hard for the life he has and I have a feeling we’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to him. GAH there are two other characters that I cannot name because I don’t want to throw speculation in the air, just know this…I think we have been given very strategic crumbs that will come together to make the world’s most magical Bundt Cake!

The End, WOW get ready to be blown away! This is the type of cliffhanger that makes my imagination and anticipation soar. Well played McLachlan well played! I had an inkling but I never imagined for things to play out the way they did in the end. Moira and Keenan are so close to the Phoenix that it’s scary. Several pieces are in place and Moira has discovered so much about herself I hope she has the strength to pull herself out of the darkness. There is a lot of resolution...tensions and passions reach all time highs and the author does a marvelous job of weaving everything together in the most delicious way. Bravo, Bravo, I will be dying slowly until I can get my hands on the next! I’ve come to care for Moira and want her to find the peace and happiness she so deserves.

My Rating
4.5 Town Home, Romance Novel, Bath, Nude, Mr. Hayes, Jonathan, Keenan, Chief, Letter, Phoenix, Note, Date, Games, Hangman, Blond, Child, Elite, Memories, Devin, Devin, Devin, Clocks, Stairs, Visit, Obsession, Oppression, The promise of dark things to come, Holy Moly I can’t wait for the next!!

About the Author

I write speculative fiction, anything that challenges the boundaries of my imagination. My Dark Fantasy novel, Mind of the Phoenix, is now available for ebook and paperback. Look for the next novel in the Memory Collector Series, entitled Pawn of the Phoenix.

When I'm not writing, I'm most likely reading. I wish I had the power to read an entire book with just one touch, but, alas, I don't. If left to my own devices, my house would have been cluttered with them. But my husband insisted I limit my collection to just the bookshelves. Along with reading, my hobbies include photography, sewing, scrapbooking, drawing, etc. Oh, and I've acquired a newfound interest in Archery.

  1. I love when the book has a blow away ending, but I do hate cliffhangers. It's so hard to wait for the next one. :-)
