GR's Summary:

Hell is looking for a way to break loose…

Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world's first murderer, he's plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it's killing him.

After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can't outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she's thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she's been trying to forget.

Sam strains Jax's control over his darkness, but running isn't an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

Guest Post:

Creating unique characters is kind of like creating a new recipe. You start with your base, then tweak as you go. Spices, salt, pepper—wine. It's really the same thing in character creation. Or, maybe I have food on the brain…
Just like cooking, I add things in bit by bit. Like, in layers. A personality trait here. An odd quirk there. An irritating flaw… These things are my spices. Added to enhance flavor.
God. Now I'm hungry… Anyone have a brownie?
*ahem* Anyway…
Jax and Sam, both damaged by life in their own way, had to stand apart from each other. They both had troubles that warped their outlook on life and had hardened their hearts. That can get tricky. I knew if I wasn't careful, they would end up feeling and sounding the same on the page. With a book done in duel POV, that would have sucked, not to mention how boring it would have gotten.
To make them different, they had to have unique personalities. A different set of spices, if you will. Jax for example, hates the color red and can recite every line from The Blues Brother movie. Sam loves her popcorn dipped in coffee (hey, don't judge!) and is a sucker for cartoons. Strange? Meh, maybe, but it does what's intended. It makes the characters stand apart. It makes them their own.
Remember, variety I the spice of life. That applies to fictional life too.
