Synopsis:

*Contains sexually explicit content and mature subject matter, including language and elements of abuse.*

A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

The Way Ria Sees It

Okay I’m crying right now. Definitely tears of joy. That was an emotional ride. You’ve read the synopsis, you know this is going to be gritty. Wow it sure was. Ms. Wade takes you through high highs and low lows. I devoured this book and didn’t bat an eye. My first feeling was one of anger! I could not believe the way that Elise was living her life. I’m one who likes to find the good in people and I search out redeeming qualities in all of my leading ladies…I was at a complete loss with Elise. Once I moved past the anger I felt pain. My heart hurt for her I saw in her what Jay saw and I was desperate for Elise to see it too. The words in this book are powerful and dark and true. Get ready for a head rush this one may give you whiplash.

T-ryst, Elise takes what she wants even when she knows its wrong, even when its not really what she wants.

H-aze, Elise’s life is a blur growing up was confusing and adulthood has left her hollow.
E-mbrace, there is only one solid person in Elise’s life she is terrified of disappointing him. Jay see’s her heart she has always been his little girl.

R-epercussions, whispers and leering gazes seem to be the normal in Elise’s life she refuses to be a victim she is careful.
E-ncounter, someone new steps into her life. Ryder doesn’t know this yet but he is about to meet his demise.
P-ast, Christian refuses to give up on Elise. Of all the men in her life he is the most puzzling, he has promised her the world but his views are skewed and those promises seem empty.
L-ove, has terrified Elise never seeing its capacity growing up has left a gaping hole in her heart. She feels as though she is unlovable.
A-gony, betrayal comes at a heavy price. What was blossoming into a beautiful friendship turns to rubble. It seems there is too much pain and too much darkness to know what loyalty is.
C-hemistry, what started as a fun fling has turned into so much more. Giving someone your heart comes with a great risk the plunge is too scary with too many variables for Elise. Pushing always pushing Elise feels as though her black heart is not worthy of love.
E-vening, a reconnection with an old flame feels familiar. Little does Elise know that the eery feeling looming over her is instinct. The past begins to catch up with her.
M-istakes, everything is out in the light. Whispers are no more the day of reckoning is here, Elise will brave the sins of her past.
E-scape, truths are out Elise will face her past. Embracing her future Elise discovers herself and what she wants. What is done is done the time has come to be exceptional.
N-aked, soul bared, life exposed Elise spills her heart. With her head held high expectations aside she will live exceptionally. That is all there is left to do.
T-ime, life moves forward its up to you what path you chose. Love is risky but with high risk comes high rewards. The pain of the past never goes away but the stars in the future will light your way.

I’m going to tell you right now this was not a fluffy read, oh no. Parts of this book will cause you to think deeper and to think outside of the box. Life is a series of boxes you see…The Replacement teaches us not to become a victim of the box, the expectation, the label. Live your life love your life. Respect yourself and respect others. Love is the most powerful force of nature never deny yourself of it EMBRACE IT! There were so many times I wanted to shake Elise! GAH and I was SOOOOO okay with a lot of the things that happened to her because of her poor decision making skills. Let me tell you about Ryder, wow he was amazing his heart though unconventional was pure and exactly what was missing from Elise’s life. The journey these two take is tragic and beautiful, broken and fulfilling. I was a sobbing bucket of joy by the end. Everyone is worth a fresh start the path to getting there is never easy, but the arrival is always beautiful. Do I recommend this book? Yes. My recommendation comes with a warning this is one you have to read with an open mind and forgiveness in your heart. Otherwise I fear it may not be for you.

My Fav’s

Ryder
Where did this guy come from? Where can I find one? J/K surprisingly enough I have, my fiancé is amazing. He regards me like his princess but declares I’m his queen. *sigh* Ryder is the same he has a heart of gold…One thing I wish, is to know more about him I feel like his character has more to say. He has that powerful calm about him thats mixed with mysterious and brooding. Mayhap thats all we are supposed to know but I would be delighted to find out more.

Ro's Take On This Journey
The Replacement, by Rachel Wade, is a dynamic piece of work! This is a complex story filled with contradiction. It is the imprisonment of the mind. Elise, is a young girl, when she realizes that life isn't all put together in a pretty box with a ribbon on top. Her mother is a throwback to the 60's, and their home is run like the home in, Leave it to Beaver. Her mother is a beauty, who is always made up, has dinner on the table at the same time each night, greets her husband at the door to take his coat and hand him a drink, all done with the reward of a callous husband that doesn't see her strengths, and preys on her weaknesses. Pretense was all her father knew and cared about. Elise listens night after night from the hallway at the emotional abuse that her mother endures and associates her worth with her mother's. Her parents divorce, her mother gets cancer and dies, and her father is shallow and materialistic. He sells the house from under her, moves far away, remarries, never wanting anything to do with his daughter from that day forward. Her only friend, Tee, moves away and she is all alone.

Elise is 23 years old, drops out of college and works at the local diner in Gig Harbor. She becomes promiscuous, and is known as the town slut. The only one that doesn't treat her like an outcast is her boss, Jay. He became her only father figure, more so than her father ever was. She admires his work ethic and his ability to act as an equal with his employees. He is a kind, considerate, man. Unfortunately, Elise makes a bad decision, and sleeps with his fat, bald, brother Tim, who is engaged. Tim is a creep, but that is what Elise thinks she deserves. Sort of a penance for her life. Elise has one goal in life, and that is to go to Paris, France someday. She has a mason jar that she has been filling since 10th grade. At every turn, something goes wrong, and she has to dip into her fund. Elise is determined to see her dream come true at any cost.

Christian is a married man in town that gives Elise the best sex of her life, but when he wants to leave his wife for her, she sets out to leave their, "relationship of sorts," behind. Christian doesn't want to give up on her. Elise feels that they don't know anything truthful about one another, and she isn't willing to let anyone in. Christian is seductive and sweet. He has always been good to her,  but it's not what she is looking for. Elise lives with the memories of her dysfunctional family, her mother's quiet tears, and the loveless marriage her parents lived; though her mother did love Elise's father. Elise strived for needy men so she could prove that someone wanted her, that she was worth something, and that is how she got what she needed in life.

One day, a maintenance man shows up at her door named, Ryder. He is gorgeous and tatted up all over his great body. Elise is turning him away at every turn and she doesn't want to open her heart to him or anyone else. Little by little, Ryder makes her realize that someone cares and that she is worthy of love and a chance to really live her life... Ryder is self-assured, beguiling, and always shows Elise that she is worth waiting for. This was a difficult book to read, with a girl that didn't have too many positives going for her. She fought everyone who ever tried to be nice to her at every turn, except Jay. The story is fast paced, and Ms. Wade does a wonderful job describing so many taboo subjects and helps the reader to delve deep into the ego and the Id. I found Elise to be a fascinating character and I look forward to the sequel. All the characters were essential to the plot and were well rounded and remarkable in their own right.

I give The Replacement, by Rachel Wade, 4 Riveting, Haunting, Destructible, Soul Searching, Longing for Forgiveness and Second Chance Stars!!!

  1. Wow this sounds like a dark and emotional story. I love when an author challenges the reader with confronting and powerful plots. Elise seems like a controversial character, but one that you can't help but sympathize with. And I'm glad to hear that it has a good ending after everything she's been through.
