GR's Summary:

“This is who I am. This is what I want. Now I need a man dangerous enough to give it to me.”

Graduate student Vivienne Charles is afraid of her own desires—ashamed to admit that she fantasizes about being taken by force, by a man who will claim her completely and without mercy. When the magnetic, mysterious Jonah Marks learns her secret, he makes an offer that stuns her: they will remain near-strangers to each other, and meet in secret so that he can fulfill her fantasy.

Their arrangement is twisted. The sex is incredible. And—despite their attempts to stay apart—soon their emotions are bound together as tightly as the rope around Vivienne’s wrists. But the secrets in their pasts threaten to turn their affair even darker... Reader

Advisory: Asking for It deals explicitly with fantasies of non-consensual sex. Readers sensitive to portrayals of non-consensual sex should be advised.

My Thoughts:

Asking For It is unlike any book that I've ever read.  It was fascinating, and there was so much more to it then what met the eye.  This is a story that is complex, with multilayered characters, and a look in to the human psyche.

Asking For It is told strictly from the main character's point of view, Vivienne Charles.  Vivienne has rape fantasies, and the only way that she can climax is when she escapes in to one of them.  This caused her previous relationship to break apart, when her boyfriend couldn't bring himself to act out and share in her fantasy.

While at a good friend's party, Vivienne meets the sexy and masculine, Jonah Marks.  After he learns about her rape fantasy, he admits to having the same one, and proposes that they engage in role play.  Vivienne and Jonah lay down rules and set boundaries for what they are and aren't willing to engage in when they role play.  They agree to stay strangers, when they are not acting out their fantasies.  However, as Vivienne and Jonah engage in their role playing, they become closer, and begin to form an attachment to one another.  Unfortunately, both Vivienne and Jonah both harbor deep dark secrets, that if revealed, could destroy what they are building together.

Asking For It was engaging, entertaining, and fast-paced.  I wanted to discover what was at the root of Vivienne and Jonah's rape fantasy.  These main characters were very complex and interesting.  We learn a lot about Vivienne as she attends counseling sessions to deal with the shame she feels for fantasizing about rape.  However, Jonah, is a very enigmatic.  I was very curious by his character, and wanted to know everything about him.  I loved the dichotomy of his person.  While in role play, he came across as cold, crass, and the perfect perpetrator.  However, when he wasn't engaged in role play, he was sweet, tender, adoring, and sensitive to Vivienne's needs.

The plot had some surprises, and one very major twist!  I enjoyed the suspense and mystery behind discovering Jonah's secrets, as well as psychoanalyzing the main characters.  I enjoyed many of the secondary characters as well, especially Vivienne's good friends Carmen, Shay, and Arturo.  It was interesting the way that Vivienne lead the double life of graduate art student at times, and deviant sexual role-play partner at other times.  The story ended in a to-be-continued, and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel, Begging For It.

My Rating:

I give, Asking For It, by Lilah Pace, 4.5 Deviant Role Play, Erotic Imaginings, Deep Dark Secret Filled Stars!
