My Thoughts:

Save Me, was the last book in the Lost Souls Series, and it put me through the emotional wringer.  I was a sniveling, red-eyed, puffy-nose mess from this book!  Ms. Freed made me feel every emotion that these main characters were going through.  I felt anger, frustration, helplessness, and devastation.

In Save Me, Charlotte has fallen in to a happy, comfortable, and committed relationship with Noble.  When they are together, they laugh, have, a good time, understand one another, and couldn't be any happier.  However, when Charlotte lets herself think of Jason, she still feels love, heartbreak, betrayal, and yearning.  When Jason's father, Butch, is diagnosed with stage four Colin Cancer, Jason moves back with his son Jason Jr. "Jay."  This causes an upheaval in Charlotte's relationship.  All of a sudden, Jason keeps putting himself in close proximity to Charlotte and telling her how much he loves her, and needs her to be with him.

Noble starts becoming insecure, and jealous.  He is scared that he is going to lose Charlotte to Jason.  Charlotte keeps trying to reassure Noble and tell Jason that they are through, but the more she is around Jason, the more she is tempted by him.  Then a horrible tragedy strikes, and Charlotte's life is turned upside down once again.

Save Me was one long roller coaster ride.  There were major plot twists in this story, and there were a few that I never saw coming.  This story was filled with passion, love, yearning, heart-break, and renewal.

My Rating:

If you enjoy emotional, and angst filled reads, you need to read the Lost Souls Trilogy.  I give, Save Me, by Eliza Freed, 5 Addictive, Tragic, Passionate, Pain Filled Stars!!!

Book Excerpt:

“This is going to end soon and I don’t want to be without you. I can’t be.” This cannot be happening. “You don’t love him.”
“Why is it so hard for you to believe that I do? I do love him,” I snap at him. I don’t know how I’m capable of loving anyone after a tour with you, but I love him.
“Because with every cell of my body I know you belong to me. Next to me, on top of me.” I swallow hard at the thought of him beneath me. “Inside of you.”
     “I get the picture.”
“And because I know that. Because it’s true. You can’t be in love with him.”
“You didn’t want to pull me away from New York City? You so selflessly fucked Stephanie Harding to make sure I ended up where I belong, but now you’ll have me leave Noble? You are fucked up,” I spit at him.
“If you give us a chance, I will never let you go again. I promise. Annie, you’ve got to give us another chance. You’ve got to know it’s not a life unless we’re together.”
The waitress brings our food and Jason and I just stare at each other. I am baffled. I hate him. I love him. I want him…to leave.
“I want you to go away with me when this is over.”
“What will be left of me? You think it will be enough for you. If I hurt Noble like that, I won’t be the same person. You wouldn’t want me.”
“Impossible,” he scoffs. We sit in silence until he finally takes a bite of his sandwich. I eat a little and stare at my glass of tea. I wish I could be drunk, unconscious actually. I’m no longer capable of living my life. Not this one, at least.
“You’re always sure of everything. Even when you’re wrong you’re sure,” I say, watching him finish his meal, completely unaffected by his plot to ruin my life, and Noble’s, and probably my brother’s because why should he be exempt from this torture. “I’m never sure of anything. Do you know why?”
Jason looks at me, bracing himself for what’s coming.
“Because the last person I was sure of, I was completely wrong about. I never thought you would be capable of doing what you did. How could you?”
Jason just stares at me, taking every word he deserves.
“How could you put your hands on her? Put your dick in her?” I lower my voice. There’s no need to yell; it’s grotesque without the dramatics.
“I guess you were lying when you said you forgave me,” he says.
“This is what you’re asking me to turn Noble into. A person who no longer believes in anything he’s ever known.”
“What I’m asking has nothing to do with Sinclair. He put himself between us. That’s his problem. He knew I wanted you back the entire time,” Jason says, taking money out and putting it on the table for lunch. “I’m asking you to let yourself be happy. Let yourself believe in me again because I sure as hell know you want to.”
I stand up from the table and start walking. I don’t stop until I get to my car, but as usual Jason is there one step before me, blocking my door.
“You’re making every single day of this nightmare even harder,” I say.
“I think the exact same thing about you. Going home to that house every night.” The cruelty of today continues as Jason leans into me and places his lips on mine and some internal sob caves my chest in and steals my breath. He puts his hands above my head, leaning on the Volvo behind me, and separates my lips with his tongue. And I let him. I let him in, in every way. My blood courses through me and throbs everywhere as I give in to what my hands and my mouth and lips have wanted for months. I wrap my arms around his neck and he pulls me to him.
I pull his hair and my tongue takes over my thoughts.
I pull away from him. His eyes are ravenous. He will take me right here in this parking lot if I let him.
“It doesn’t change a thing,” I croak out. “You knew all of that before my body told you.”
“I did, but now you know it, too,” he says, and takes the keys from me to drive us home.
     Home…
The ride is long and silent. Betrayal sits between us and contemplates how many lives Jason and Charlotte can ruin, their own apparently not enough for them. I lean my head on the cool window and focus on the sky as the almost full moon rises. It’s not even four o’clock yet. The supermoon will be here in a few days. What lunacy will it bestow upon us?
“I love you, Annie,” Jason says, and I never take my eyes off the moon. I never turn to him or acknowledge he spoke. Through with the talking, done with the truth. Let him know everything. Now I want to know nothing.

My Thoughts:

Redeem Me, is the second book in the Lost Souls Series, and this series must be read in order.  At the beginning of this story Charlotte is in a deep and downward spiral of depression.  She was shocked by a betrayal of the "love of her life," Jason Leer.  Now, she can't bring herself to shower, get out of bed, eat, or interact with any of her friends.  Everyone is worrying about her, but she continues to shut them out.  Jason is trying to reconcile with Charlotte, but she refuses to speak to him, read his letters, or listen to his voice messages.

Finally, two of her good girl friends use tough love, in order to get her to begin living again.  Charlotte has been avoiding her best friend, Noble Sinclair, but after she runs in to him, she realizes how much she missed him, and how he always makes everything better.  Noble has been in love with Charlotte for many years, and has waited patiently for the time when she would notice him.  As Charlotte begins to spend more time with Noble, feelings toward him start to grow in to more than just friendship.  However, she still loves Jason, and doesn't want to break Noble's heart.  Noble is determined not to give up.  Will Charlotte and Noble get their happily ever after?  Will she ever be able to let Jason go, and love Noble the way that he deserves to be loved?

Redeem Me had a lot of angst, and was a very emotional story.  I cried along with Charlotte, as she mourned the loss of Jason.  I was angry at Jason's betrayal, and worried that Noble would get his heart broken.  This is one very complex love triangle, and one person is bound to get their heart broken.  While Forgive Me, focused on Charlotte and Jason's relationship, Redeem Me, focused on Charlotte and Noble's relationship.  I am highly anticipating the last book in the trilogy, Save Me, and am dying to know who Charlotte will chose to be with, and how everything will come about.

My Rating:

Redeem Me was another page-turner in the Lost Souls Trilogy.  I feel for all of the main characters, and am glad that the author is deciding who Charlotte is ending up with, because I could never make such a tough decision.  With Jason, Charlotte has scorching hot passion, but everything is so difficult between them all of the time.  With Noble, she has a strong friendship, romance, and he is her rock, but the passion isn't as intense.  I give, Redeem Me, by Eliza Freed, 4 Devastating, Painful Betrayal, Romantic, Second Chance at Love Filled Stars!

My Favorite Quote:

Book Teasers:

Book Excerpt:

“I’m still waiting for an answer, Charlotte. I don’t understand. Do I not appeal to you?” Not with all this talking.
After a long sigh, I lean back and look Noble in the eye. “With Trey, or people like Trey, I’m instituting a ‘swim at your own risk’ approach. If someone finds my wretched self attractive”—I put both hands to my chest, forgetting it’s bare in the middle—“and they’ve been made aware of the dangers, it’s their responsibility to make their own decisions.” I pause and Noble’s even more annoyed than he was before I started the ocean reference. “You, though, my beautiful friend, are far too precious to swim without a lifeguard. I would never be reckless with you.”
Noble pulls me close and kisses me. I freeze for a brief moment and give in to the warmth spreading through me. I cross my wrists behind Noble’s neck and lean into him, enjoying his lips for the second time. It’s becoming less and less possible to deny him, especially if he’s going to look this good. Over the band, I hear tires squeal and I expect the crash sound effect to play, befitting the situation. Noble’s lips graze my neck and my ear. His breath steals my doubts and he whispers, “I’m a big boy, you know.” Oh, I know. “You can let your guard down.”
I return my head to Noble’s wonderful shoulder. This is crazy. I’m not starting a relationship with Noble Sinclair!
    “Noble.”
    “Yes?”
“I want to be your friend.”
“You are my friend.” The snowflakes come down in a mass flurry from the start, a thousand with the first one.
“No, I want to be your incredibly dear friend. I want to date someone I don’t like half as much as you.”
Noble pulls back so he can see my face and I try to remain as serious as possible.
“I am thankful to have you in my life. Never more so than the past few months. I need you in a hundred different ways, but I can’t keep sneaking kisses from you. It’s a waste of time for both of us.”
Snowflakes continue to fall on us and Noble continues to study me, probably trying to figure out why he’s out here in the first place. Then, just as surprisingly as before, he kisses me. And again, I kiss him back. He’s not throwing it out there or testing the waters. Noble claims me with his lips, denying every rationale I’ve clung to. I should be his forever.
     I really do hate myself.
“You’re not listening,” I say, returning my face to its home right between his neck and shoulder.
    “Perceptive,” he says, nodding.
“Sorry to interrupt you guys,” Julia says, sounding like someone just died. “Jason was just here.”

 Interview with Noble Sinclair:

Today we’re sitting down with one of Salem County’s finest, Noble Sinclair. He’s the 6’2”, blue eyed, golden boy who went from Class Flirt his senior year to a dual major in Agriculture and Finance at Rutgers University. He’s also a main character, along with Charlotte O’Brien and Jason Leer, in Eliza Freed’s Lost Souls series.

Noble’s such an interesting name. What does it mean and why were you given it?

I’m pretty sure Noble means tortured by classmates, and my parents gave it to me to make my life difficult.

Forgive me for saying, but you look far from tortured.

laughs

It’s actually a family name that means noble. I’m the last stop—none of my children will be named Noble. Charlotte is the only person that still uses it. She’s disagreeable and stubborn, very stubborn. Even my parents call me Nick.

You come from a long line of farmers, and have taken over your family’s farm, what do you like most about the job? How does it define you?

I am the seventh generation of Sinclair farmers and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I considered other professions at Rutgers, but realized I want to spend the rest of my life outdoors. There are few other careers that would allow me to manage my own business, work outside, diversify my days, and climb into bed every night with a feeling of accomplishment. I believe in our ability to nurture and grow.

What’s your strongest childhood memory?

When the plowing was done, just before the planting, my father would let us run through the fields. The soil was lined with hard grooves from the tire treads and we’d crush them with our bare feet. My sisters and I, and Jason Leer, would spend evenings running and playing, knowing once they were planted the fields were off limits. There are evenings when the warm breeze hits me and I can remember racing out there like it was yesterday. It’s still my favorite stage of farming. That moment before everything begins again.

What’s in your refrigerator right now?

I have no idea. Beer and eggs, probably. Check the date on anything you find in there. I’m quite a catch, huh?

How would you like to die?

I didn’t realize this was an inspirational interview. I haven’t thought much about it, but I want it to be peaceful. If I’m lucky I’ll have a great dinner, make love to a beautiful woman, and then pass on in my sleep.

Speaking of beautiful women, what quality are you most attracted to in Charlotte?

The list would be shorter if you asked what doesn’t turn me on about Charlotte. Let’s see. She’s beautiful of course, her smile and those long legs. There’s the spot on her neck right below her ear that always melts her and I can’t stay away. The softness of the underside of her breast…the feel of her legs tangled in mine under the sheets.

sighs

Her strength could move an army. It’s a quiet, unyielding power. Charlotte could take you out without ever raising her voice. She is the strongest person I’ve ever met.

But what I absolutely can’t live without, is the sound of her laughter.

My Thoughts:

I was drawn to this trilogy by the beautiful book covers.  I have never read a book by Eliza Freed before, but after having finished, Forgive Me, I'm really glad to have discovered an amazing author, and series that has completely grabbed my attention.

Charlotte Annie O'Brien was in a long-term relationship with a really nice guy, who her mother approved of, but didn't make her stomach flutter of her pulse race.  She ends up getting reacquainted with Jason Leer, one of her childhood friends that she lost touch with after she attended high school.  He gives her butterflies and makes her feel excitement at times, and drives her crazy at other times.  Her mother warns her that she doesn't want her daughter to be with a steer wrestling cowboy.  Then Annie, is blindsided when her parents are killed in a horrible car accident, and the only person that can make the pain less intense is, Jason Leer.

Jason has been leading a numb existence, and can relate to Charlotte all to well.  After his mother died, he's just trying to exist in his life.  Charlotte makes everything better for him as well.  However, Charlotte and Jason's lives are pulling them in two completely different directions.  Jason does not like the city and wants Charlotte to move with him to Oklahoma, where he can continue competing in the rodeo circuit.  Charlotte is torn.  She enjoys city life, has a close network of friends, and opportunities to work in her chosen field of Statistics in New York, when she graduates from Rutledge.  Pretty soon Charlotte and Jason are fighting all the time.  Is love enough for their relationship to work?

Forgive Me had angst, friendship, passion, romance, and a lot of ups and downs.  There were a few plot twists in the story, and it ended on one very crazy cliffhanger.  I'm glad I can jump right in to book two and see what happens between Charlotte and Jason.  I have to be honest in saying that this story made me contemplate the fact that love might not always be enough when two people are so very different from one another.  Charlotte and Jason has such a strong love and passion for one another, but it looks like if they want things to work, one person is going to have to give up everything else that they want in their life.

I loved all of the secondary characters. Charlotte has a ton of good friends!  However, Charlotte's best friend, Noble, fascinates me.  He's a sweetheart and genuinely cares about her.  The fact that Jason thinks Noble is in love with her has me curious to learn if he really is, and if this is going to come out in the next book, Redeem Me.

My Rating:

I give, Forgive Me, by Eliza Freed, 4 Angsty, Passionate, Rocky Relationship, Sexy Alpha Cowboy Filled Stars!!!  I can't wait to see what happens next!

My Favorite Quote:

" 'I love you, Annie, because when most girls would fall apart, you get pissed off.  You don't understand the concept of surrender.'  I float up, not realizing I'm arching my back at his touch.  'And you can't be tamed.'  He pulls me back to him 'And yet I've never met someone with a greater ability to see the good in people.  You are the perfect mix of courage and mercy.'  (eARC, Loc. 2465)

Note From Eliza Freed:

This scene goes back to Cedar Creek Lake in Texas. It's where Annie and Jason spent a week in a cabin on the lake, and used the time to repair their damaged relationship. I wanted reader's to hear from Jason before the next book is released. I wanted them to remember how much he loves Annie, how hard he worked to keep the relationship going. Theirs is not a perfect union. It defies comprehension by everyone outside of it, and pushes both their limits of compromise and acceptance.

I could write about Jason Leer every day. Even when he's not present in the series, he's a part of each scene. None of the Lost Souls could take place without a deep understanding of his love for Annie and its impact on her life. My fear is that as long as I write, I'll never know a character as well as I know him.

Eliza

P.S. - I really do have an unhealthy obsession with Jason Leer.

Lost Souls Bonus Scene:

Annie reaches down and touches my hair with one hand and covers her eyes with the other. Her breathing deepens as she fights for air and I fight for her orgasm. I need to see her come. I continue with my tongue and she arches away from me. I pull her back to my mouth, not letting her go. She will be mine forever. She writhes and presses her thighs against the sides of my head and I lick her swollen lips one last time as she succumbs. I’m sure I could keep her here, on this kitchen table, for the rest of our lives. Her chest rises, her eyes still covered, and I can barely recall how angry I was at her a few days ago.
“Let’s take a bath,” I say, wanting to forget the past few weeks, and her trip to New Orleans…and her complete unwillingness to value her safety. “It’ll make you feel better.”
I take her hand and help her off the table. She follows me to the bathroom without a word. She’s always so tranquil after she comes—serene, not questioning a thing, not remembering what’s lost. I turn on the hot water and plug the tub. There’s a jar labeled “bath salts” with a scoop on the shelf. It smells like vanilla. I toss the scoop on the counter and pour a shot of salts into the water.
     “Where’s your lighter?” she asks.
“You gonna start smokin’?” I tease, but stop short of making a crack pipe comment.
“To light a candle,” she says, exasperated.
“I’ll do it. You get in while it’s hot.”
I line the candles up on the counter and light them one-by-one. Annie doesn’t move from the mirror. She runs her hands across her bruised skin until she shudders. It’s the evidence of a thousand needs only she can satisfy. Usually it’s my fault. No matter how many times I tell myself to be gentle, as soon as she’s near me I lose control. This time though, these bruises are her doing. I wanted to talk. She wanted this.
Her eyes follow her hands over her breasts and down to her waist. I drop the lighter and turn off the lights. Her skin glows ethereal in the candlelight, but she still stares in the mirror, gliding her fingertips across the bruises on the inside of her thighs. I cover her hand with my own.
“Get in the tub,” I whisper in her ear.
She climbs in. Sometimes, when she listens without arguing, I forget how stubborn she is, how she can infuriate me more than anyone else walking this earth. Annie lowers herself until she touches the water and then pulls back up.
     “Too hot?”
“I just need a second to get used to it,” she says. She rests her arms on the sides and sinks in, laying her head on the edge. I watch until the peace returns to her face and then undress myself.
I reach to change the music. Her taste is abysmal. But the lyrics grab my attention. They hint at a love affair with the devil. I drop my arm to my side and turn back to Annie. She looks like an angel, but she drags me through hell.
“I feel beautiful when you look at me.” Me, and every other man on the planet.
“You are beautiful, Annie. Surely you know that. I’ve heard you told a hundred times before.”
“Understanding the way others view my appearance and the way I feel when you look at me are two totally different things.” I climb into the tub and rest her legs on each side of my waist. I run my hands up and down them. My dick’s hard in the water and I force my mind to concentrate on the fact that she’s sore, that her body needs a break.
“What else do you feel when I look at you?” I’ve never had to ask before. Annie couldn’t hide a thing from me, but these last few weeks my misery has replaced assuredness. If she can hop in a car to Mardi Gras without telling me, I’m no longer sure what she’s capable of.
“I thought you didn’t want me to think about us,” she says, reminding me of the weeks following her parents’ death. She tortured herself with her mind. Every waking hour, every moment of sleep.
“That was then.” Now I need to know everything. I lean forward and run my hand up the inside of her thigh and she closes her eyes and surrenders to my touch.
“Transparent,” she says, and I swear her voice is inside my head. “Alive. Condemned.” She opens her eyes, waiting for some response, but I have only understanding. When she called from New Orleans, it was like a life sentence—incapable of finding her, waiting to hear she was safe, wanting to kill her myself. If something happens to her...
“Wanted. Safe.” Her words pull me from the horror. “I feel like nothing bad can happen to me if I’m with you.” Which is why you should be with me. I rest her foot on my shoulder and wash her leg with a sponge.
“It scares me, the control you have over me.” At this I laugh out loud. How ironic.
“That’s interesting because it’s the complete lack of control that keeps me awake at night,” I say, wishing she didn’t drive me so insane. I place her leg back in the water and raise the other one. Her legs should be wrapped around my neck every day. The familiar need mixed with anger and frustration returns and I bury it down deep. This can’t become an argument.
“What are you going to do after graduation?” I ask. On my list of things I’m not leaving Cedar Creek Lake without settling, the end of her Rutgers career is at the top. I run the sponge down her calf with my lips following it, reminding her of where her future is.
“I’m just getting used to the idea I’m back in school. I haven’t considered after. It’s common to have a Masters in Statistics. Maybe I’ll do that.”
     “So common.”
“Probably not as common as Philosophy majors.” She smiles and watches my lips return to her leg. “What are you going to do?” she asks, and the smile drains from her face.
“I won’t graduate for another year.”
     “Why?”
“Light credits, especially in the spring. Makes it easier to miss four days a week at rodeos.” The statement separates us, even in this tub. The rodeo is like a curse word she hates to use.
“Do you ever think it would be easier to date a girl from Oklahoma?”
“Every day you’re away I think it.” And every minute you’re doing drugs, and every time I see the way guys look at you, and every walk home late at night you take, and every mile you drove to New Orleans. But the thought of another girl is ridiculous. I half-laugh as I say, “They’re close. I could have them every day. They understand rodeo.”
“They have dirty shoes,” she plays along.
“They listen to good music.” Annie lowers her eyes to the bubbles and I lose her for a second. Her green eyes filled with doubt, hidden from the one person who’s incapable of hurting her. I slide forward and lift her head. “No matter what, I can’t get past they’re not you. You’re in my blood and I’ll never let you go.”
“Condemnation.” Oh, you have no idea.
I turn her around and pull her back to my chest. The sponge in my hand runs down her neck and around her breasts. Here, in this tub in the middle of Texas, it’s impossible to think we can’t make this work.
“Close your eyes and, if you promise not to use it against me, I’ll tell you why I love you,” I say in her ear. Her head falls back on my shoulder and I kiss her neck.
      “I promise.”
“I love you, Annie, because when most girls would fall apart, you get pissed off. You don’t understand the concept of surrender.” She smiles at my words and floats up, arching her back at my touch. “And you can’t be tamed.” I pull her back to me. “And yet I’ve never met someone with a greater ability to see the good in people. You are the perfect mix of courage and mercy.” I stop. Unsure of how far I should take this, but the question has been pounding in my head since I left Stillwater. If we’re going to make it, we’ll have to be together. I run the sponge to her belly button and back up. My lips graze her neck and slide to her ear.
“Come to Oklahoma, Annie.” She stiffens in my arms. I should regret asking her, but I don’t.
“Haven’t we been over this?” Steady…
“Not now. Spend the summer there with me and then move there after you graduate. Spend my senior year with me.” She’s silent, searching her mind right in front of me. I know it’s not where she belongs, but it’s where I need her to be. And I’m selfish enough to ask her, knowing she’s generous enough to come.
“I’ll go. I’ll spend the summer there and if it works, I’ll move there after graduation.”
“You will?” I yank her around. Her answer shouldn’t surprise me the way it does. I realize now, a part of me feared this might be our last weekend together. A part of me I don’t allow myself to hear.
“On one condition.” She’s strong, and bold, and I stop breathing. Fuck.
“I would say anything, but it’s you so I’ll just ask what the condition is.”
“You’ve got to back off of me for the next year.” I’m a scolded child. One who doesn’t think they’re wrong. “Trust my instincts. Believe that I’m surrounding myself with good people. Give me some credit.”
“Annie, you have to admit your behavior is a little scary.” I plead with her to hear some reason.
“I live smack dab between Philadelphia and New York City. If I want a tranny hooker dressed as a nurse to deliver an eight ball of cocaine to me, I can get it in an hour.” God, I hate her sometimes. “I’m fine. I will get high. I might try ’shrooms. I’ll most definitely stay up too late and possibly not drink enough fluids, but I’m going to be okay. You have to trust me.”
I say nothing. A million contentions flying through my mind. She’s a danger to herself in an unsafe city. Backing off is not possib—
“You make me want to lie to you about what I do,” she says, and it could not have felt worse if she punched me in the face…again. She’s never lied to me.
I lean back in the tub shaking my head in defeat.
     “All right. I’ll try.”

About Eliza Freed:

Eliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks and her neighbors began to talk; her mother told her to find a job.

She settled into Corporate America, learning systems and practices and the bureaucracy that slows them. Eliza quickly discovered her creativity and gift for story telling as a corporate trainer and spent years perfecting her presentation skills and studying diversity. It's during this time she became an avid observer of the characters we meet and the heartaches we endure. Her years of study have taught her laughter is the key to survival, even when it's completely inappropriate.

She currently lives in New Jersey with her family and a misbehaving beagle named Odin. An avid swimmer, if Eliza is not with her family and friends, she'd rather be underwater. While she enjoys many genres, she has always been a sucker for a love story...the more screwed up the better.
