GR's Summary:

"Love! That's the four letter word to describe how I felt about this unique, sexy story. J. Daniels' hottest book to date."---Penelope Ward, New York Times bestselling author

Fate. Hate. Love. Lies. Which four letter word will change their lives forever?

Sydney Paige was never so mortified to hear the words "wrong number" in her life. She meant to tell off the guy who broke her best friend's heart, but unleashed her anger on a perfect stranger instead. And now her world is turned upside down by the captivating man who wants to keep her on the line.

Brian Savage is living a life he's quickly come to hate-until Sydney's wild rant has him hooked and hungry for more. Soon the sexy woman on the phone becomes the lover in his bed. But Brian has secrets, and the closer he lets Syd get, the harder it is to shield her from the devastating mistakes of his past . . .

Top 5 Favorite Four Letter Words:

Cake- Thought I was going to start with the f-bomb, right? Nah. Who doesn’t love cake? It’s not just for birthdays, people! I created an entire series around a baker. My top favorites are red velvet and German chocolate. I love a good pound cake, too. And anything with bacon. I’m sure someone out there has created a cake with bacon on it. That would probably rank way up there with me.

arrested development animated GIF

NSFW- Does this count? I’m counting it. NSFW posts are my favorite. Why? Um, because they’re not suitable for work, meaning they are most likely dirty or completely inappropriate in some way or another. And I live for inappropriateness.

Babe- This reminds me of Trouble. I love when he first calls Sydney ‘babe’, back at the beginning of their relationship when they only spoke on the phone. He just throws it out there, maybe not thinking anything of it, but she totally gets butterflies and that rollercoaster ride feeling you get in the pit of your stomach. I love this term of endearment. And I especially love it when Sydney uses it on Brian.

Wild- My crazy girl! Sydney was such a blast to write. Her dialogue killed me. Her attitude toward life and love was inspiring. She never kept a thought in her head. If she was thinking it, she shared it, and I loved that about her. She lived wild. No one else could pull off that phonecall the way she did.

Rachel McAdams was my muse for Syd.

Love- We want it. We need it. Songs are written about it. Books are written about it. Oxygen, water, food, shelter, and sleep are basic survival needs of human beings. I like to think love is also something essential. Who doesn’t love love?

Book Excerpt:

I’d been in Dogwood a month and had been down to the ocean only once. Insane, right? I lived at the beach and I wasn’t experiencing it.
It hadn’t been a priority, and honestly, I didn’t have a lot of free time on my hands.
When I wasn’t picking up shifts at Whitecaps, I was talking on the phone to Brian, shut up in my room or doing it lying on the couch if Tori wasn’t home.
Now I wasn’t shut up in my room or lying on the couch, quilt-covered and heart-shattered. I was no longer talking on the phone to Brian and I wanted to see the ocean. I wanted to feel the sand beneath my feet and skim the waves with my hand.
I had tons of free time tonight while Tori got laid. Might as well make the most of it.
I took the stairs down a level and stepped out beneath the deck.
A couple was sitting on a hammock going at it like their boat was sinking, sloppy-suctioning kisses and need-filled moans spilling into the air.
There had to be a handful of empty rooms in that house. They couldn’t pick one and save me the surround sound.
     Gross.
I followed the sand-covered path down the beach, taking small sips of my daiquiri as I went. Deep voices grew louder the closer I got to the water. I wasn’t paying much attention to them. I was looking ahead and forward to feeling the temperature of the ocean and maybe even finding a couple of pretty shells when the voices grew loud enough to hear clearly.
     Very clearly.
     That’s when it happened.
I stopped, feet frozen and ears alert when one of the voices not only grew loud enough to focus on but also registered in my mind as a voice I’d possibly heard before.
“Don’t know why I gotta keep repeating myself. It wasn’t like that,” the man said, sounding irritated. “She was sweet and good to talk to. Funny and cute about shit. Real cute. The fact that she was also a stunner didn’t surprise me. I heard it in her voice. But for the last fuckin’ time, and I mean this, I’m not saying it again, that’s not what got me. I was fucked before I even saw her picture.”
“You saying you were gone for a girl you never fucking met, Brian? Not possible,” the other guy replied.
     I sucked in a breath.
     Brian.
A phantom heartbeat fluttered in my chest.
     No way…
With gentle steps, I moved closer to the voices, reached the end of the path, and peeked around an overgrown bush, spotting the two men standing on the beach.
I watched the one guy, taller than the other, who had his back to me, cross his arms over his chest and say to his friend, “Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. You talk to Sydney one fuckin’ time and you’ll know where I’m coming from. It was that fuckin’ good.” I squeaked then. Not a gasp but a squeak I tried to conceal with a quick hand to my mouth, cup hitting the sand, but it was too late.
     They both heard it.
Two pairs of eyes sliced in my direction. I stared back at the one pair coming from the one voice I knew, in my blood and my bones and the breath filling me, I knew that voice and the man it belonged to.
He stared back, eyes narrowing to focus better, focusing enough to make me out where I stood then going round and filling with surprise.
     Pain lanced through me.
I wanted to run. To him or away, I didn’t know which urge was stronger, and it felt like I was being pulled in both directions by forces I couldn’t fight so I stood there, staring back as my hand uncovered my mouth and skimmed my throat.
     “Brian?”
He was moving before I spoke, long legs closing in fast, and before I could blink, he was right in front of me, close enough to smell and feel if my eyes were closed but I definitely couldn’t test that theory right now.
I stared unconsciously into his face, tilting my head back to do so and taking in every inch of him.
Dark hair buzzed close to his scalp, thick eyebrows and deep green eyes, several days’ worth of stubble coating his jaw, which appeared sharp beneath it and full, perfect lips, parted as he breathed slow and heavily.
     Beautiful.
     I knew he was.
“Oh, my God,” I whispered. “It’s you.”
     He blinked, breath shuddering.
     “You recognize me?” he asked.
I bit my lip to suppress a moan because, God, that voice. It melted my insides when it sweetly assaulted my ears and turned my bones to jelly. It always had but now, seeing the man behind it and the mouth responsible for it, watching it shape and twist those words so perfectly, I was done
     Done.
     Toast.
     A goner.
I blinked when he stepped closer.
“Syd,” he pressed, eyes desperate as they searched mine.
“Holy shit. Are you the girl?”
The other man moved beside us and slapped his hand against Brian’s back, who was keeping his eyes focused on me.
I looked to the friend and recognized Exhibit A from Whitecaps, who I now knew went by Cole.
     “Uh,” I answered.
I was in shock. Was he expecting me to speak?
Cole grinned. “Small world,” he chuckled, looking between us. “Small fucking world. I’ll leave you two alone since you probably have a lot to talk about.”
He gave me a wink then shuffled past me and disappeared down the path, doing just that. Leaving us alone.
     I was alone…with Brian.
     Oh, God.
     Oh…God. Now what?
I looked up and met pleading greens, filled with desperation I could feel against my skin.
Questions and confusion swirled in my brain. My stomach was doing nothing but flips and excited little twists.
It was Brian. My body knew Brian and it was acting up impulsively, reacting to that smooth familiar voice and more, and when he reached out and held my face, thumb sweeping over my cheek as his lips whispered, “Wild,” soft and ache-filled, I stopped thinking and feeling altogether and sprang, launching myself at him and into his arms, which curled instantly around me, drawing me nearer and higher until our mouths met in a kiss that hurt and healed so deeply my soul cried out.
     Beautiful.
     Knew it would be.

For some people, silence is a weapon. For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield. Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. Book Excerpt:

The expression on her face said he gave great full frontal, and when he laughed, her pink lips split into a wide smile. Her smile transformed her from pretty to beautiful, but my attention swung away from her as tiny hairs rose all over my body. That laugh…it was deep, rich and somehow familiar. A shiver crept over my shoulders. That laugh…

He was walking backward, and I was rather amazed that he didn’t trip over anything, actually somewhat envious of that fact. And then I realized he was heading toward the last half circle. Toward me. I glanced around. There were only a few seats open, two on my left. The girl was following him. Not just following him. Touching him.

Touching him like she’d done it a lot.

Her slim arm was extended, her hand planted in the center of his stomach, just below his chest. She bit down on her lower lip as her hand drifted farther south. Golden bangles dangling from her wrist got awful close to the worn leather belt. My cheeks heated as the boy stepped out of her reach. There was something playful about his movements, as if this dance was a daily routine for them both.

He turned at the end of the desks, stepping behind the occupied chair, and my gaze tracked up narrow hips, over the stomach the girl had touched, up and up, and then I saw his face.

I stopped breathing.

My brain couldn’t perceive what I was seeing. It did not compute. I stared up at him, really saw him, saw a face that was familiar yet new to me, more mature than I remembered but still achingly beautiful. I knew him. Oh my God, I would know him anywhere, even if it had been four years and the last time I’d seen him, that last night that had been so horrible, had changed my life forever.

It was too surreal.

Now the reason why he’d popped in my head this morning made sense, because I’d seen him, but hadn’t realized it was him.

I couldn’t move, couldn’t get enough air into my lungs and couldn’t believe this was happening. My hands slipped off the desk, falling limply into my lap as he dipped into the seat next to me. His gaze was on the girl who took the seat next to him, and his profile, the strong jaw that had only been hinted at the last time I’d seen him, tilted as his eyes moved over the front of the room, across the wall-length chalkboard. He looked like he had back then, but bigger and with everything more…more defined. From the eyebrows darker than the mix of brown and black hair and thick lashes to the broad cheekbones and the slight scruff covering the curve of his jaw.

Goodness, he’d grown up in the way I’d thought he would when I was twelve and started to really look at him, to see him as a boy.

I couldn’t believe he was here. My heart was trying to claw itself out of my chest as lips—lips fuller that I remembered—tilted up, and a knot formed in my belly as the dimple formed in his right cheek. The only dimple he had. No matching set. Just one. My mind raced back through the years, and I could only think of a handful of times I’d seen him relaxed. Leaning back in the chair that seemed too small for him, he slowly turned his head toward me. Eyes that were brown with tiny flecks of gold met mine.

Eyes I’d never forgotten.

The easy, almost lazy smile I’d never seen on his face before froze. His lips parted and a paleness seeped under his tawny skin. Those eyes widened, the gold flecks seeming to expand. He recognized me; I had changed a lot since then, but still, recognition dawned in his features. He was moving again, leaning forward on his seat toward me. Four words roared out of the past and echoed in my head.

Don’t make a sound.

“Mouse?” he breathed.

GR's Summary:

One moment of recklessness will change their worlds

Smart. Responsible. That's seventeen-year-old Breanna's role in her large family, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of line. Until one night of shockingly un-Breanna-like behavior puts her into a vicious cyber-bully's line of fire—and brings fellow senior Thomas "Razor" Turner into her life.

Razor lives for the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, and good girls like Breanna just don't belong. But when he learns she's being blackmailed over a compromising picture of the two of them—a picture that turns one unexpected and beautiful moment into ugliness—he knows it's time to step outside the rules.

And so they make a pact: he'll help her track down her blackmailer, and in return she'll help him seek answers to the mystery that's haunted him—one that not even his club brothers have been willing to discuss. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings grow. And suddenly they're both walking the edge of discovering who they really are, what they want, and where they're going from here.

My Thoughts:

Katie McGarry's Thunder Road Series has all of the aspects in it that I love about reading young adult contemporary romance!  It has the loyal fraternity and close-knit bonds of brotherhood; as well as high energy, and action-packed plot lines, that only the best MC club romances have.  These stories make you feel as if you are experiencing the enthralling and passionate discovery of first love right alongside the main characters; as well as the painful, but necessary growth that happens in the space between being a young adult, and maturing as you learn to embrace and love who you are, while you become an adult.

Walk the Line is the story of Thomas "Razor" Turner and Breanna "Bre" Miller.  Razor and Breanna have a lot in common.  They are both struggling at home, and have a hard time fitting in.  Razor has sworn loyalty to the Reign of Terror, but the death of his mother haunts him.  A detective visits him, and tells him that his mother's death was not an accident.  Due to the fact that Razor's father and the Reign of Terror are not giving him the answers he seeks, he will have to investigate her death on his own.  He learns from the detective that there were two coded messages that might clue him in to what happened the night his mother passed away.

Breanna is the "perfect" child.  She is highly intelligent, gets excellent grades, and helps with the burden that her parents have thrust upon her, as she takes care of her younger brothers and sister.  However, Bre doesn't feel understood.  She is the weird smart girl at school, and her older siblings give her a hard time at home.  Bre's parents don't have any time for her, because they are both busy working long hours, and attending to the children that they think need them more.

When Bre gets stranded at school one evening, she talks to Razor for a little while.  She is intimidated by him, and believes all of the horrible rumors that she has heard about both him and the MC.  Bre and Razor share an attraction, and end up seeing each other at a bar, where they talk, and flirt.  Unfortunately, one of Bre's classmates takes a picture of Bre and Razor together.  The picture doesn't look innocent despite the fact that nothing happened between the two of them.  He blackmails Bre with the photo and threatens to post it on the internet if she doesn't do his English essays for him.

Bre confides in Razor, and he promises to protect her, and try to find a solution to her problem.  He also asks Bre to help solve the coded messages about his mother, and she agrees.  As these two get to know one another, they fall in love.  However, can a relationship between them survive, when they come from two very different worlds?

Walk the Edge was a fast-paced read, that had a lot of depth and layers to it.  I loved that it was realistic about the challenges of being a teenager, as well as the fact that no matter what backgound you come from, life experiences can make you feel similar afflictive emotions, such as being the the odd man out, or feeling, alienated, helpless, unimportant, etc.  Ms. McGarry tackled themes of prejudice and stereotypes, and how important it is to look beyond the surface of who a person is.  She also touched on the fact that life isn't just black or white, but consists of many shades of gray.  As kids, we believe in absolutes, but as adults, we learn that life isn't that simple.

Ms. McGarry is a brilliant author.  I love how her novels are so entertaining, but also chock-full of substance, life lessons, and pearls of wisdom.  The friendship, romance, and unconditional acceptance that Razor and Bre shared was very sweet, heart-warming, passionate, and emotional.  The bonds between family members was also a central topic in this story as Razor and his father worked on their relationship, and Bre interacted with her family members.

I am beyond ready for the charming Chevy, and broken-hearted Violet to get their story.  These two belong with each other, and it has been obvious since the first book in the series that they have unresolved feelings.  I have a need for "happily ever afters," and hope that Violet will be able to let go of the anger and blame that she has placed on Chevy, and the Reign of Terror for her father's death.

My Rating:

Walk the Edge was a great addition to the Thunder Road Series, and a book I highly recommend.  I love all of the main characters in this series, and how they cross-over into each additional book.  I give, Walk the Edge, by Katie McGarry, 4.5 Palpable Emotions, Team Work, Passionate Blossoming Love Filled Stars!

Book Excerpt:

“I’m here about your mother.” The asshole knows he has me when my eyes snap to his.

“She’s dead.” Like the other times I say the words, a part of me dies along with her.

This guy has green eyes and they soften like he’s apologetic. “I know. I’m sorry. I’ve received some new evidence that may help us discover what caused her death.”

Anger curls within my muscles and my jaw twitches. This overwhelming sense of insanity is what I fight daily. For years, I’ve heard the whispers from the gossips in town, felt the stares of the kids in class, and I’ve sensed the pity of the men in the Reign of Terror I claim as brothers. It’s all accumulated to a black, hissing doubt in my soul.

     Suicide.

It’s what everyone in town says happened. It’s in every hushed conversation people have the moment I turn my back. It’s not just from the people I couldn’t give two shits about, but the people who I consider family.

I shove away those thoughts and focus on what my father and the club have told me—what I have chosen to believe. “My mother’s death was an accident.”

He’s shaking his head and I’m fresh out of patience. I’m not doing this. Not with him. Not with anyone. “I’m not interested.”

I push off the railing and I did out the keys to my motorcycle as I bound down the steps. The detective’s behind me. He has a slow steady stride and it irritates me that he follows across the yard and doesn’t stop coming as I swing my leg over my bike.

“What if I told you I don’t think it was an accident,” he says.

Odds are it wasn’t. Odds are every whispered taunt in my direction is true. That my father and the club drove Mom crazy, and I wasn’t enough of a reason for her to choose life.

To drown him out, I start the engine. This guy must be as suicidal as people say Mom was because he eases in front of my bike assuming I won’t run him down.

     “Thomas,” he says.

I twist the handle to rev the engine in warning. He raises his chin like he’s finally pissed and his eyes narrow on me. “Razor.”

I let the bike idle. If he’s going to respect me by using my road name, I’ll respect him for a few seconds. “Leave me the fuck alone.”

Damn if the man doesn’t possess balls the size of Montana. He steps closer to me and drops a bomb. “I have reason to believe your mom was murdered.”
