Summary
Kyon Ensin finally has what he’s always wanted: possession of Kricket Hollowell, the priestess who foresees the future. Together, their combined power will be unrivaled. Kricket, however, doesn’t crave the crown of Ethar—she has an unbreakable desire to live life on her own terms, a life that she desperately wants to share with her love, Trey Allairis.

As conspiracies rage in the war for Ethar, Kricket’s so-called allies want to use her as a spy. Even those held closest cannot be trusted—including Astrid, her sister, and Giffen, a member of a mysterious order with a hidden agenda. But Kricket’s resolve will not allow her to be used as anyone’s pawn, even as the Brotherhood sharpens its plans to cut out her heart.

As the destiny prophesied by her mother approaches, Kricket will backtrack through her fiery future to reshape it. For she knows one thing above all else: the only person she can truly count on is herself.

Everyone Knows There Must Be a Great Sacrifice For Peace

Bucket of tears. Buckets and buckets of tears. What an epic read that was!! The Author has weaved pure magic into the pages of this book! Darken the Stars is my favorite of this series. I honestly hope it isn’t the last. If you are reading this review YOU MUST add the first two and if you have read them and are on the fence regarding this one…I say what are you waiting for? DO it! Bartol takes the reader through several ups and downs. I really really really hope there is another book in the making because this was just to perfect of a read to not have complete resolution of all story lines. I will be stalking watching for a possible next book.

The Story
, GAH!!! This one was so good! It picks up right after Sea of Stars and is so full of amazing detail and knowledge of Ethar. Kyon has been searching for Kricket for years he was sent with a very calculated mission, but upon meeting Kricket he knew they were destined to be together. Through an exchange Kricket finds out exactly who her family really is. Sadly they aren’t what they should be and Kricket finds herself more alone than ever. Being near Kyon should make her sick but there is something about him she comes to know him better than anyone else. Piercing his fierce heart there isn’t anything he would not do for her and the reader can feel the passion and love within every caress. While Kricket is with Kyon war rages on and the house of Rafe is near complete demise. The brotherhood continues their deprive plans and at the helm Kyon’s father. He is Kricket’s number one threat but Kyon will stand by her defending her from the world. Secretly another group of outcasts plan to fulfill the prophecy on their terms using Kricket for their own elevation in power and then discarding of her as though she were nothing more than a useful tool turned to trash. Kricket has always been a powerful survivor and she fights for those she loves. We watch her willingly make sacrifices and difficult decisions because she knows that is the right path.

The Characters
, Kricket is more powerful than before. Drawing strength from her heart she will continue to show everyone she will not be caged or controlled. We get to see major development as she begins to maneuver through this world with confidence. Her intelligence and forthwith all are key in the days to come and situations she has to outwit. She proves herself time and time again as a fighter and my heart broke for her paper heart more times than I can count. She is truly everything and more in what a beautiful of heart and mind character should be. Kyon, his involvement with Kricket was like a dream to me. I’ve never disliked him, I’ve actually always liked him for Kricket and in this installment we really get to see how much they are meant to be together. Though Kyon is a bit unhinged I’ve always felt like there is more to him than he’s shown. I can happily say we see a different side of him. The side that is born of the love and connection he has with Kricket. I truly hope we get to see more of Kyon with Kricket and dare I say end up with her by his side. Trey, sigh this is a hard one for me…Kricket has always loved Trey from the very beginning but things have changed so much and there has been so much betrayal that I don’t want to see these two together. Where Kyon has relentlessly pursued Kricket and did everything for her and gave her everything just to know her. Trey just sits back to see what will happen instead of fighting for her until the very end. There was a point in book two where Trey openly states things may not work out for them, while Kyon promises they will always be together, that no one will ever come between them. I’m usually wrong in these situations but I think Kricket is perfect for Kyon and there is no one else, and I could easily see Trey falling in love with someone else…GAH! I know I’m going to be so wrong and so crushed!!! I’ll stop now cause I could go on all day! We get to meet the leaders of the war and a slew of key characters. I honestly hope we get another book because I feel like there is so much more that needs to happen.

The Ending
, just what I’ve come to expect from Bartol…Perfection with a dash of ominous energy. From the very beginning of this series everyone who meets Kricket wants something from her. Trey took her heart and there were times when I felt he used her for information. Kyon took her and all I saw was him trying to win her eternal love. If you don’t like love triangles then watch out because this one is a doozy. I on the other hand quite enjoy them even though I tend to pick the wrong guy, fingers crossed I get it right this time! The groups of people who underestimate and try to control Kricket are shown how much of a free spirit she truly is. As I mentioned before everyone wants something and in turn she gives everyone what they want. I can’t believe how she does it, but she lets her heart lead the way and the rest is history. Though a major plot point is resolved there are a few open story lines. So much sacrifice happens at the end that it is heart breaking. It had me in ugly tears. I’m hoping and wishing with all of my might that we get another book. Hopefully these characters I’ve come to love all find their way esp Kricket and Kyon*together* winky face.

My Rating
5.0 I read it TWICE because it was so FREAKING AWESOME I just had too, Sea Shells, Swim Lessons, Dreams, Betrayal, Abandoning, Mothers Best Friends, Shower, Love, Spix Memories, Date, Shadow World, Crowns, Broadcast, Torture, Consort, Annexed Area, Water, Goodbye, A New Chapter in A New World, New Beginnings, Hope Filled Stars!!!

About the Author
I live in Michigan with my husband and our two sons. My family is very supportive of my writing. When I'm writing, they often bring me the take-out menu so that I can call and order them dinner. They listen patiently when I talk about my characters like they're real. They rarely roll their eyes when I tell them I'll only be a second while I finish writing a chapter...and then they take off their coats. They ask me how the story is going when I surface after living for hours in a world of my own making. They have learned to accept my "writing uniform" consisting of a slightly unflattering pink fleece jacket, t-shirt, and black yoga pants. And they smile at my nerdy bookishness whenever I try to explain urban fantasy to them. In short, they get me, so they are perfect and I am blessed. Book Review: Bad Romance: A Stepbrother Novel by Jen McLaughlin

Bad Romance: A Stepbrother Novel

GR's Summary:

In this explosive novel from bestselling author Jen McLaughlin, a good girl falls for the ultimate bad boy: her stepbrother. Perfect for fans of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, Bad Romance proves that passion can be so wrong it’s right.

Seven years in the army will change a guy. But after a shoulder wound ends his career as a sniper, Jackson Worthington finds himself back home, fighting a battle that’s all too familiar: keeping his hands off Lilly Hastings. She’s still her rich daddy’s little angel, innocent, impossibly lovely, as squeaky-clean as Jackson is dirty. And she’s still his stepsister—forbidden but not forgotten, not after the soul-melting kiss that got him kicked out of the house at eighteen. He couldn’t resist her then. How the hell can he resist her now?

Lilly is about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and commit to a high-stress job she hates, all to please the father who controls every waking moment of her life. On top of everything, her teenage crush is back, with a sleek, chiseled body and a trace of the rebellious boy whose lips sealed her fate. Jackson’s timing couldn’t be worse . . . or better. Because Lilly’s all grown up, too. She’s aching for another taste. And for the first time, she’s ready to be a bad girl.

My Thoughts:

I was really looking forward to reading, Bad Romance.  I've read other books by author Jen McLaughlin and really enjoyed them.  When it comes to this particular story, I have mixed feelings about it.

Bad Romance is about Lilly Hastings and Jackson Worthington.  Lilly has grown up in wealth her whole life.  Her father is the CEO of a large company and runs his household the same way he runs his business; commandeering control of every aspect.  When Lily's mother dies, her father remarries, and she gains a new stepbrother, Jackson.  Lilly is 15 years old and Jackson is 18 years old at the time.

Jackson's mother has remarried several times, and always made him feel unloveable, and like the biggest mistake of her life.  Jackson instantly takes a dislike to his egotistical and controlling stepfather.  Even though he plans on disliking Lilly, she wins him over with her sweet and kind-hearted ways.  Jackson's mother and stepfather have plans for his future.  However, Jackson is determined to join the army.  Lilly and Jackson end up sharing one scorching hot kiss, and he gets kicked out of the house.  Jackson ends up leaving for the army immediately, and even though Lily write's him letters, she eventually stops when he never writes her back.

Seven years later, Jackson is out of the army, and returns to his home city without telling his family about his return.  He runs in to Lilly at a nightclub, and they both still share an insane attraction.  However, Jackson thinks Lilly deserves better than what he has to offer.  Lilly is now engaged, as has been arranged as part of a business deal by her father and his friend to save their two floundering companies.  Lilly offers for Jackson to stay with her in her townhome.  What will happen as Lilly and Jackson's feelings for each other grow, and temptation is just down the hall?  Will Lilly save her father's company and lose Jackson forever?

I liked the general theme of the story.  I was intrigued when I read the plot summary, and couldn't wait to dive right in.  However, the plot of the story dragged a bit, and needed more twists to keep things interesting and moving.  It was fairly predictable, and Lilly kept giving the same weak excuse for why she had to marry a man she didn't love.

The passion between Lilly and Jackson was palpable.  The attraction and allure between these two was my favorite part of the story.  Both Jackson and Lilly were stubborn in their viewpoints at different times in the story, and I got frustrated.  I liked that Jackson was a "bad boy" without being a manwhore. It was refreshing seeing a hot, sexy man, without all of the standard bad boy cliches.  If you are looking for a fun, light, and sexy read, you might enjoy, Bad Romance!

My Rating:

I give Bad Romance, by Jen McLaughlin, 3 Forbidden Love, Intense Attraction, Fireworks Exploding Filled Stars!

Book Summary:

How many times can you lose the person you love?

Katherine and Matthew are destined to be born again and again, century after century. Each time, their presence changes history for the better, and each time, they fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated.

Spanning the Crimean War, the Siege of Carlisle and the near-future of 2019 and 2039 they find themselves sacrificing their lives to save the world. But why do they keep coming back? What else must they achieve before they can be left to live and love in peace?

Maybe the next together will be different...

A powerful and epic debut novel for teenagers about time-travel, fate and the timelessness of first love. The Next Together is told through a mixture of regular prose, diary entries, letters, "original" historical documents, news reports and internet articles.

My Thoughts:

The Next Together was an excellent debut by author Lauren James.  This story flew by, and I didn't want to put it down for even a few minutes.  The author used a variety of written media to give the story an authentic feel to it.  We get everything from diary entries, maps, and notes, to emails, blog posts, and descriptions of audio and video.  The way that Ms. James broke up the story was brilliant!  She alternates with short passages the stories of four different lifetimes where Katherine and Matthew co-existed, fell in love, and strived to make the world they lived in a better place.

The four time periods that we read about are Carlisle England in 1745 where the "Jacobites" are trying to overthrow England, The 1854 Crimean War, 2019 where Matthew and Katherine are trying to destroy biological weapons, and 2039 where that are both University students.  In each of these time periods, initially Matthew and Katherine aren't aware that they lived before.  However, they experience deju-vu, dreams that feel like memories, and feel like they've known and loved each other forever.  While each of these stories alternates, they are all told chronologically from beginning to end.

Regardless of what time period Matthew and Katherine were in, their personalities shined, and as the reader I got to know the essence of what made them who they were.  I loved both of these characters.  Matthew was conservative, serious, sweet, dependable, big-hearted, and not much of a risk-taker.  Katherine was outgoing, cheeky, fun, liked taking risks, and was really good at getting Matthew to loosen up, joke around, and do things that he wouldn't normally do.

The Next Together brought parts of history to life, and made me contemplate the future and the mysteries of the universe.  It is a story that will make you think about the possibility of soul mates, as well as if there is a larger reason for why we were put on this earth.  This story was vastly entertaining with its many plot-twists, conspiracies, high octane suspense, and sweet and tender romance.

My one critique of the story was that I had questions at the end that were not answered.  However, since this is a series, I am hoping they will be addressed in the next installment.  I can't wait for book #2!!!

My Rating:

I give, The Next Together, by Lauren James, 4.5 Endless Love, Tender Moments, Destiny, Exciting, Pulse-Pounding, Suspense-Filled Stars!

My father was most certainly NOT an innocent man. As the leader of the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club, he was guilty of many things. But he died for a crime that he didn’t commit, framed by an enemy within who then stole his club and everything he had ever worked to protect.

Including my innocence.

When Dornan Ross framed my father, he set into motion a series of events that could never be undone. My father was murdered by Dornan Ross and his sons when I was fifteen years old.

Before my father died, Dornan Ross and his sons stole my innocence, branded my skin and in doing so, ensured that their lives would be prematurely cut short. That they would suffer.

Excerpt:

Confucius said, “Before embarking upon a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” I planned to dig seven.

Sometimes I don’t think about it for hours at a time. Sometimes, a whole day will pass, and it’ll be there, under the surface, burning my insides with the brutality of its truth. My truth. And I’ll get home from my dead-end job in this dead-end fucking town in the asshole of Nebraska, and I’ll have almost made it through a whole day of not thinking about it, about my father and Dornan Ross and his sons.

But then I’ll do something without thinking, like undress to go to bed, or slide under the covers of my bed. And I’ll see the marks they branded on my right hip – seven horizontal lines, each stacked on top of each other, made by casting the blunt edge of a butcher’s knife into fire and then pressing it into my flesh. A line for Dornan Ross and a line for each of his six older sons. Notches on a bedpost. Scarred for a lifetime so that I can never forget. Some are thicker than others, some short and others long, but each one a devastating reminder of everything they took from me that night.

Even if I stay in my stale clothes to avoid seeing my scars, I still can’t escape them. I never sleep well. I toss and turn, fitful and drenched in sweat, awakening from nightmares where they find me and turn the knife to the sharp side. Where they don’t just brand me – they cut me until I am dead, so I won’t talk to the police. I know things, see. I know things that the police don’t, about purchased alibis and body disposal spots, about too many girls who went missing and too many men who kept too many secrets.

I used to wish every day and every night to forget about my fathers murderer and what he did to us. Not anymore. Now I want to remember every tiny detail so that I can exact my revenge.

Tomorrow is different. Tomorrow is my twenty-first birthday, the day I gain access to my secret inheritance. The several hundred thousand that my father managed to hide before Dornan framed him for the murder of a policeman and his family, a crime that Dornan and his eldest son committed as retribution for a drug bust that almost wiped the club out. It might be dirty money – my father wasn’t above money laundering and drug manufacturing – but it was his money. Dornan managed to seize control of the rest when he enacted his devastating betrayal.

Tomorrow is truly my birthday, for I will become another person. Today my name is Juliette Portland, but tomorrow I will wake up as someone else entirely.

Someone who will bring Dornan Ross and the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club to their knees.
