London is a city in flames. Tensions are high and a critical situation is about to go from bad to worse. The Prime Minister wants to send a message, and the SAS will be the ones to deliver it.

Emotional detachment is my specialty. I’m ruthless and cut throat, but there is nobody better.

Sarah Tatem is an innocent. Caught up in a world in which she doesn’t belong, and trying desperately to do the right thing. My job is to keep her safe long enough to get what’s needed, and bring an end to this siege of terror.

My name is Lieutenant Tom Harper, and I’m about to unleash hell.

    Excerpt:

I was practically kneeling in front of the screen as I tried to understand what I was seeing. Men were shouting at one another, though their words were indecipherable.

The person filming darted out from behind a shipping container to take more shots. Everything was happening so fast, the camera moving wildly with the person it was attached to. Finally, I realised it was a body cam by the way it was flailing and jerking all over the place. I had no idea what shipyard they were in, but it made sense that the assault would be there rather than a boat. They would have wanted to take the terrorists after the handover happened, just to be sure.

A soldier came into shot across the way, crouched behind another container, and I guessed he was one of ours. Covered from head to toe, it was impossible to know who it was, but I held my breath anyway. The camera at least became steady as the gunfire slowly ebbed, though focused now on the last of the targets. In the periphery of the screen, the kneeling soldier leant further forward to take a shot when he was yanked sharply backwards in a move that literally saved his life. As the last shot rang out, sounding a death knell to the terrorists who’d been responsible for taking so many innocent civilian lives, the rest of the team seemed to realise what I already knew. The rescuer, the guardian angel who’d ripped his teammate away from the path of certain death, had exposed himself to make the ultimate sacrifice, saving his friend’s life at the expense of his own. Soldiers darted in front of the camera again, and a few more indistinguishable voices called out before the silence. The excruciating, insufferable, tormenting silence, broken only by the clear voice that cut through the darkness like a scythe, ripping a hole through my heart as it did.

“Man down.”

Review:

I’m a big fan of R.J. Prescott’s Hurricane series. Those characters have stolen a piece of my heart and her writing style always captivates me from beginning to end! I was really excited to be introduced to an entirely new cast of characters and story. City Under Siege is an intense and passionate reading journey that kept me turning the pages until the very end.

Since the death of her father and brother, Sarah Tatem’s life has been a mess. She has been thrown into a world she does not belong to. The family business is creating chaos in her life and her aunt is putting non-stop pressure on her. Her life is put in danger when secrets are revealed about her family. Enter Lieutenant Tom Harper. His job his to protect her from any danger that surrounds her. What he did not expect? Falling hard for her. She’s like a soothing balm to his broken soul.

I really loved the slow burning romance between Sarah and Tom. Their chemistry was instant, but their love bloomed in the most beautiful way and caught them both by surprise. R.J. Prescott always makes us feel like we are another character in the story and not just a reader. I was at the edge of my seat many times during this reading escape. Tom was a fantastic hero and I loved how he deeply fell in love with Sarah. I was cheering for their HEA from the very beginning. I loved how Sarah pushed his buttons and made him step out of his comfort zone, which was letting someone in to love him.

I’m completely in love with Eli, Will and Crash an Nan. They all contributed to this story in a fantastic way and they brought a smile to my face. R.J. Prescott is an amazing author that writes stories that linger with you for a long time. If you have not read anything by this author, you are seriously missing out!

I give, City Under Siege, by R.J. Prescott, 4.5 fierce, passionate, intriguing, heart-pumping stars!

    Excerpt:

“What’s going on in that head of yours?” he asked. Standing in front of me, he consumed my space until you could barely slip a piece of paper between us.

“I know you want to make sure I won’t break and mess up the operation, but this rest was just what I needed. If it would help, I can make a statement for your superiors stating that I threatened to pull from the operation if I didn’t get some space, so you brought me here. I don’t want you getting into trouble over this. Over me….”

He used his knuckle to raise my head until I was looking deep into those big brown eyes.

“The truth is, there are a million places I could’ve taken you to feel safe, but I wanted you here. Sleeping in my bed, cooking in my kitchen, and making yourself at home. I might not get the chance again. So stop worrying so much. Some people are worth a little trouble. I’ll get a rap over the knuckles at most, and I’d take that any day of the week for the chance to have you here.”

“You mean that?” I asked softly. My whole body relaxed in relief as he said the words I’d so longed to hear. Succumbing to the intimacy of the moment, I placed my hands on his chest as he rested his on the stove behind me, trapping me in the security of his arms. The unique scent of his soap and aftershave drugged my senses like nothing else, and I closed my eyes as I tried to memorise it. There were so many consequences to what we were about to do, a price that we would both have to pay. But in that moment, I didn’t care. All I could think about, all I could feel, all I could see, was him. His nose rubbed gently along mine as his warm breath danced across my lips. My whole body ached with the need to feel his weight pressed against me, and the small groan he let slip through his lips told me he felt the same way.

“What are you doing to me?” he whispered.

“Same thing you’re doing to me,” I whispered back.

I opened my eyes long enough to see the expression of pure torture on his face before it turned to resolve. As his head dipped towards me, my breath hitched, knowing, finally, he was going to kiss me.

Synopsis:

The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death.
~Oscar Wilde~

Adoration is not profound enough a word to express the depth of my love for her. From the moment she walked into my life and set my heart and soul on fire, not a day's gone by that she hasn't plagued my every thought.

We were each other's completion. She was everything I wasn't--the sigh to my roar, the virtue to my sin, the cure to my wounds.

We Were One.

Until the unthinkable happened.

That I've survived such a tragedy without having completely lost it, is a mystery in itself. But as my mind starts to blur the lines between reality and my delusional heart, I begin to question everything, including my sanity.

And then the real mystery begins . . .

Review of Girl In The Mirror HERE

Excerpt:

As I usually did when I first arrived at the lake, I parked and lit up a smoke so I could stake the place out by myself for a little while first. I’d heard about and seen enough of the twins now to know they were getting popular with the boys. Not in a bad way, but from what Nolan told me, even the quieter seemingly shyer one of the two had just as many admirers as the more outgoing one. But I’d yet to, nor did I plan to, socialize with either—ever.

“Did it hurt?”

I should’ve known right then those deep blue eyes that close, coupled with that sweet voice, would be the end of me. It was one of the twins—but unlike most of the folk in town, I knew exactly which one—stood before me, staring at my arm curiously.

Trying not to get too sucked into her intoxicatingly playful eyes, I looked away from them as our eyes met and I glanced down at what she was staring at instead. I couldn’t help smirking. She was asking about my latest tattoo.

“A little,” I said, not making too much of it, then glanced back at her. Smiling at those curious eyes just couldn’t be helped, so I did as I continued to indulge. “But it’s the best kind of pain there is. The kind that hurts so good.”

I knew flirting with her was a risk, but I could see the way she was looking at me—the way most girls did when I took them in so unabashedly, making no secret of my dirty thoughts.

She was younger than most girls I normally hung out with. I figured a few more risqué comments from me might have her red as a beet and walking away as she should.

“That thing between your legs,” she said, making me stop mid-drag of my cigarette, and my brows jumped at attention. “It just keeps getting bigger.”

Coughing what little smoke I’d inhaled, I proceeded to make an ass of myself nearly choking then laughing until I was finally able to speak. “What?”

Review:

Girl In The Mirror was supposed to be a standalone book, but I'm so excited that Elizabeth Reyes decided to take it into another direction and created the Looking Glass Series. We Were One is an alternate POV novel that felt like I was reading something entirely new. I absolutely love when authors write male POV's and Elizabeth Reyes completely stole my breath away with Nico's POV. He's such a fascinating character and the love he has for his girl his heart-melting.

I won't go into details about what happens in the story because I feel that every reader needs to experience the complete Looking Glass reading journey from the very beginning. What I am going to discuss is how this book gave me all the feels. It was such an emotional book that made me feel a hurricane of emotions. This story is full of passionate, tender, heart-breaking and emotional moments. Nico's love for his girl is so powerful that when tragedy strikes, a river of tears will fall on your cheeks and you will be left with a ball of emotions that you can't control. Tissues are highly recommended!

When I read Girl In The Mirror, I was trying to put together the pieces of an intricate puzzle. With We Were One, I got to see that even if Girl In The Mirror was a fantastic novel, Nico's POV was such a powerful addition to that story. Elizabeth Reyes gave a wonderful gift to her readers when she wrote We Were One. There is no better gift for a reader than to reunite with characters that own a piece of their heart.

The Cortez Brothers are a cast of characters you do not want to miss! Elizabeth Reyes always creates the most fascinating characters that keep you coming back for more! Her writing style is amazing and if you have not read anything by her yet, you are seriously missing out! I'm extremely excited to find out what his next in this series. I'm crossing my fingers that I will soon reunite with these amazing characters! <3

Lindy's Thoughts:

Penelope Douglas is such an amazing writer.  I always anticipate her stories with so much excitement and yearning to get my hands on them.  Hideaway has been a book that I have very impatiently been waiting for.  When it landed on my Kindle, I was ecstatic!!!

Corrupt is my favorite dark romance.  I loved becoming completely immersed and obsessed with Michael and Rika's story.  Kai was my favorite secondary character in Corrupt, and I was longing for his viewpoint.  I wanted to get into his head, and see him fall as hard as Michael had for Rika. I wanted to see the broken pieces of Kai's soul put back together...

Hideaway is the sequel to Corrupt, and must be read in sequential order.  We met the four horsemen in book one, Michael, Kai, Damon, and Will.  These four grew up together as best friends, and were inseparable.  They came from wealthy, privileged, broken families; and each had their own secrets, and deep layers of darkness.  Every year on Devil's Night, the night before Halloween, they liked to stir up mischief and mayhem.  This was the night every year, where they let their darkness and deepest desires take over.

In Hideaway, we got Kai and Banks' story. Kai, Michael, and Will are all looking for Damon.  They know that he is twisted and wants revenge on them.  Michael wants to protect Rika, and Kai must protect a secret that only Damon knows.  Banks is also looking for Damon, but for very different reasons.  She wants to make sure that he is safe and protected.  Her love and loyalty towards him is unconditional and unshakeable.

Kai and Banks have shared unforgettable and life changing moments with one another in the past, but their paths were not destined to intersect; until now.  Pitted against one another, what will these two do when the longing and desire for one another continues to grow beyond their control?  What will happen when the four horseman, Rika, and Banks, are reunited?

Hideaway was a little slow moving at the beginning, and took me more time to get into than Corrupt; but it was still an excellent read!  Banks was a strong female lead, with guts, sass, and an adventurous soul.  She was intelligent, loyal, street smart, and had suffered greatly in her young life.  She was rough around the edges, but very vulnerable and warm-hearted once you pierced through her tough exterior.  Kai was a strong male lead as well.  While he had a dark side, he ultimately had a strong moral code for defending and protecting others. He was loyal, and wanted to please and honor his family.  He especially wanted to be as great of a man as his father was, and make him proud.  Kai and Banks were both characters that I loved and rooted for.  The passion and chemistry between these two was intense, and the sexual tension and build-up with every interaction had me wanting for more and anticipating how it would all end.

Hideaway was full of suspense, mystery, darkness, revenge, betrayal, passion, secrets, loyalty, friendship, and love.  I don't know how she does it, but Ms. Douglas is able to make her characters well-rounded and so very real.  They come to life right off of the page.  We are able to see all of their darkness and unlikeable qualities, but still love them for all the good they possess as well.  The next book in the story will be, Kill Switch, which will be Damon's story.  I can't wait for the plot to thicken.  Especially, since we have been given insight in to why he is the most twisted and dark character of them all.  This segment has shown us some of his redeeming qualities, and I have hope that he will be able to heal and become a better person.

Rating:

I give, Hideaway, by Penelope Douglas, 4.5 Sensual, Passionate, Intense, Surprising, Redemption Filled Stars!

Mikki's Review:

Devil's Night is BACKKKKK!!!

I have been waiting for Kai's book since the moment I turned the last page of Corrupt. He completely stole a piece of my heart in Corrupt and counting down the days to this release has been such a fun experience. Sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for my most anticipated book of the year. I could not wait to find out what secrets Kai was keeping and who was the mystery girl that would turn his world upside down.

You absolutely need to read Corrupt before Hideaway. This is a series that you want to read from the very beginning to understand the dark and twisted world of the four horsemen. If you have not started this series yet, you are seriously missing out! Penelope Douglas created a world that I want to visit over and over again. Her characters are captivating and the events that happen on Devil's Night are pretty intense! There is so much I would like to say about Hideaway. This story gave me all the feels!!! Penelope Douglas exceeded all of my expectations! Hideaway was my most anticipated book of 2017 and she delivered a story that will keep me prisoner of her words for a very long time. Corrupt left me with a book hangover that lasted well over a month. Hideaway will be exactly the same.

I don’t want to say too much about what happens in the book because every fan of this series should experience the same kind of feels that I did. Going into the book with little info about where the author’s words are about to transport us. Be prepared to be shocked by the secrets that will be revealed in this story. I was left speechless a few times and still go back to read some scenes because I was like Whoooaaaa?!?!?! What I will tell you is that Banks and Kai have completely stolen my heart! Their chemistry was undeniable and their love story was perfectly imperfect. Michael, Kai, Damon and Will all have a special place in my heart, but Kai really stole the top spot with his book. The chase between him and Banks was deliciously addictive and unforgettable. Banks is the kind of heroine I love to cheer for. She’s strong and confident. She takes her place in the story and Kai had no idea what was heading his way.

Hideaway is filled with old characters who you will continue to cheer for, new characters you will want to learn more about and a story that will linger with you for many days after you have turned the last page. This romantic suspense kept me on the edge of my seat until the end! The little teaser at the end of Hideaway for Kill Switch, which will be the third book in the Devil’s Night Series, was a jaw-dropping little piece of bookworm heaven. I can’t even deal!!! I’m so excited to read it! 2018 can’t come soon enough!

Rating:

I give, Hideaway, by Penelope Douglas, 5 wild, chill inducing,  sensational, all-consuming stars!
