Lindy's Thoughts:

I have been following the Temptation Series from the very beginning!  This series is so unique, and different from anything else that I have read, and I love it!   Learning about different cultures has always been a passion of mine, and the Amish culture is extremely fascinating.  Ms. Hopkins creates an authentic experience for the reader, as we are immersed in a world were different societal views, norms, rules, and ways of doing things is vastly different from our own.

In Rachel's Deception, this addictive saga continues.  These stories should be read in order, as the timeline is linear, and won't make sense if you read them out of order.  Rachel's Deception, focuses on 16 year old Rachel Miller (Noah's sister).  Rachel is a loner, has been stuck in a deep depression, and riddled with feelings of guilt ever since her sweet and "perfect" older sister Sarah died.  She is strong willed, and has a rebellious nature.  Rachel begins sneaking out of the house and hanging with a troublesome "English Crowd" who frequents bars, gets drunk, and are sexually promiscuous."

As the story goes along, we get three different perspectives; Rachel, Rose, and Justin.  Rose continues to tell us her and Noah's story (which were the main characters from all of the previous books in the series.)  However, now we have Rachel and Justin (Rose's younger brother,) coming to the forefront as main characters in this segment.  Rachel and Justin develop feeling towards one another, which are strictly forbidden in the Amish world (due to the fact that Justin is "English" not Amish.)  Simultaneously, Rachel develops feelings for Micah, her dead sister Sarah's ex-fiancee.  As you can see, we have the beginning of a love triangle here.

Rachel's Deception flowed at a slow but steady pace.  The story was more character driven, then plot driven, which caused it to slow down until the very end.  Ms. Hopkins set a solid foundation for more books in the series, and I am looking forward to the plot thickening.  Her main characters are so well fleshed out, that it's as if they are walking off of the page and speaking to the reader directly.  Relationships are being developed and strengthened in this segment between lovers, friends, and family members.  We learn a lot about the Amish community, as well as individual characters struggles; with a focus on Rachel.  I can't wait to read the next book in this ever evolving series!

My Rating:

Rachel's Deception was another great addition to the Temptation Series.  Although the pacing was slow, it was steady, and picked up at the end with plot twists, suspense, and even danger!  If you enjoy learning about different cultures and customs, along with sweet romance, and suspense; you must check out the Temptation series.  I give, Rachel's Deception, by Karen Ann Hopkins, 4 Emotional Darkness, Love Triangle, Suspense Filled Stars!

Ro's Take on this Journey:

Rachel's Deception, by Karen Ann Hopkins, is the continuing Amish Saga, in the Temptation Series, #4.  In Rachel's Deception, we get the story of a tormented young girl, Rachel, the younger sister of Noah.  Rachel has demons that haunt her every thought, to the point that she must anesthetize herself to drown out her night terrors.  She tries to live in a deluge of liquor, rebelliousness, and danger.  She doesn't ever worry enough to stop the quandaries she puts herself into, until she is up against the wall.

Rachel has survived the tornado that took the life of her older sister, Sarah.  Though they were each other's playmates, since a young age, there was an abundance of hostility, envy, and jealousy on Rachel's behalf.  Rachel is the complete opposite of her sweet, unassuming deceased sister, Sarah. Rachel is a loner, misunderstood, and filled with guilt and regret.  In this segment, Rachel finds that she has feelings for Micah, Sarah's Amish ex-boyfriend who likes her but is naive to her behavior, and Justin, Rose's younger English brother, who knows her secrets first hand.  Both these young men can cause an uproar in the Meadowview Community if Rachel's scandalous behavior is revealed and she makes the wrong choices.

This segment also brings to light danger from the past that catches up with Rose and her family, shunning, principals broken, and changing times.  The elders must rethink their ways and come to terms with the new age children that are growing up, in order to try to keep them from leaving the Amish community for a different way of life.  There are so many insightful lessons to be learned from Ms. Hopkins Saga.  She is a brilliant writer and her characters are well rounded.  Each and every one of them come to life on the printed page.  Both primary and secondary characters have a story to tell, and the reader will ultimately connect with each and every one of them on some level or another.

The Temptation series has been a favorite of mine, and I know the readers would be remised if they didn't get to be a part of this great journey.  The reader will experience the rigid ways of the elders, the staunch attitudes of the unyielding, the tenderness of the compassionate, the heartbreaking sorrow of the broken, and the full circle life lessons of the Amish's world; which can bring their community together or rip them apart in this wonderful Saga.

My Rating:

I give, Rachel's Deception, by Karen Ann Hopkins, 4 Heart Wrenching, Terrifying, Life Changing, Tender, Loving Stars!

        GR's Summary:

        Life. Death. And...Love?

Emma would give anything to talk to her mother one last time. Tell her about her slipping grades, her anger with her stepfather, and the boy with the bad reputation who might be the only one Emma can be herself with.

But Emma can't tell her mother anything. Because her mother is brain-dead and being kept alive by machines for the baby growing inside her.

Meeting bad-boy Caleb Harrison wouldn't have interested Old Emma. But New Emma-the one who exists in a fog of grief, who no longer cares about school, whose only social outlet is her best friend Olivia-New Emma is startled by the connection she and Caleb forge.

Feeling her own heart beat again wakes Emma from the grief that has grayed her existence. Is there hope for life after death-and maybe, for love?

        Praise for Heartbeat:

“An intense examination of a family coping with grief, this absorbing character study easily keeps pages turning.”

        — Kirkus on Heartbeat

        My Thoughts:

Heart Beat, by Elizabeth Scott, was a very emotionally taxing story.  I read this story with a heavy heart, tears consistently fell down my face, from the very beginning to end of this realistic portrayal of intense grief and emotional turmoil.

The main character, 17 year old Emma, visits her brain dead mother daily with her stepfather, Dan, in ICU, who is being kept alive long enough for her baby to be strong enough to survive delivery.  Emma is full of rage, and lashes out at her stepfather, because she doesn't agree with his choice to keep her mother alive by the use of machines.  Dan is a wonderful, compassionate, loving, and patient man, who is deeply grieving as well.  He consistently reaches out to Emma, who constantly shuts him out, and says some really hurtful things to him.  However, It was obvious that Emma was grieving, and wasn't able to cope with her mother's death.  She had a lot of guilt, and insecurity that drove her to act the way that she did.  It was difficult to read at times.

Olivia, Emma's best friend, and next door neighbor was there for Emma.  However, she couldn't relate to what Emma was going through.  Then, Emma gets to know Caleb, who is rumored to be a loner, loser, and troublemaker at school.  Yet, the more that Emma gets to know Caleb, the more that she feels like he is the only one that truly understands her, and he does.  He has faced tragedy and has been trying to cope with his own painful loss.  These two become a beacon of light, and hope for one another, in a very dark, lonely, and painful time in their lives.

Anyone who has dealt with the traumatic loss of a loved one will be able to relate to this story.  It is heartbreaking, traumatic, and realistic.  It made me contemplate living in the present, and letting those you love know how much you care, because we don't know when our heart will stop beating, or when we will lose someone we love.  It's so important to spend quality time with those you love, and treasure those precious and fleeting moments.

        My Rating:

I give Heart Beat by Elizabeth Scott 4 Heartbreaking, Bittersweet, Healing Love, and New Beginning Stars!  Read this story if your in the mood for an emotionally charged tear jerker!  Be ready to hold your loved ones close after you finish this story!

        My Favorite Quotes:

"I see what grief does, how it strips you bare, shows you all the things you don't want to know.  That loss doesn't end, that there isn't a moment where you are done, when you can neatly put it away and move on.  It never leaves you."  (eARC, Loc. 975)

        ~Emma

"He looks at me, right at me, in that way he has, like he sees all the way inside me and what he sees is beautiful, and I close my eyes because I don't want this moment to end.  I like being happy.  It's nice, and I don't think I ever enjoyed it like I should have."  (eARC, Loc. 1807)

        ~Emma

"One heartbeat, two heartbeats, three heartbeats, more, and you never know when you have used yours up.  That's the thing.  You don't know.  How long will your heart beat for?  How many heartbeats do you have?  (eARC, Loc. 1872)

        ~Emma

What’s the best “treat” moment you’ve had as an author?

Every day when I get to spend writing out the rough draft of a story is a treat for me because of the writing process I use.
Before I ever start to write a rough draft for a new story, first I spend anywhere from weeks to months to occasionally even years mentally prepping for it. I always have at least 5 to 7 story ideas simmering on the back burners of my subconscious, where they may sit for years until one of them starts to “boil” and demands my attention (or if I have a deadline, I’ll pick the one that feels most ready to go). Then I will sit down and plot out the story in detail. My outlines tend to run up to 20 pages or more in length and contain whole pieces of dialogue and action as well as general rough sketch summaries of scenes. I will play with the plot quite a bit here, rearranging scenes as needed, playing with the story’s timeline and the characters’ back stories and internal and external motivations. When I can see the entire story like a movie in my head complete with a celebrity cast of actors chosen to play each major character, I then create a custom soundtrack for that story, which I will listen to on loop while I finish plotting, writing and revising the story. Then I copy my outline over to my writing program, dividing it up by scene and adding to each scene’s notes as new bits of dialogue, action, location details, timeline tidbits, and even symbolic elements come to me.
By the time I start to write the actual story, it is extremely clear in my mind, and the act of writing its rough draft is more like an exercise in typing as fast as I can as the story “drains” from my mind onto the pages like a tsunami. This part of the process is very fast for me, and is a whirlwind of nonstop treats for me as an author. For instance, I just finished writing my latest YA novel, a contemporary romance, which ended up at 136,000 words in length and took me just two weeks to write. The last day I spent writing its rough draft was a particularly memorable 22 hour writing marathon where I broke my previous personal daily word count record (13,000 words) by writing over 32,000 words in one day! (By the way, I would NOT recommend doing this often, as it then took me a full three days to recover! lol) However, while writing the rough draft of this long novel only took me 2 weeks, its initial story idea came to me a year or two ago, and the plotting stage occurred off and on over a period of several months before I was finally ready to purge that full story onto paper. Which is why finally getting to write its rough draft felt like such a long anticipated treat!
