GR's Summary:

Some men are just better when they're bold.

Welcome to the Point...

In a dark and broken kingdom, a ruler has to be fearless to control the streets and the ruthless people who run them.

Race Hartman is just bold enough, just smart enough, and just lost enough to wear the crown. Places like the Point will always have bad things and bad people, but the man in control of all that badness can minimize the devastation. Race has a plan, but can he prevent total annihilation without destroying himself?

Brysen Carter has always seen her best friend's brother for what he is--too pretty, too smooth, and way too dangerous to touch. Basking in Race's golden glow is very tempting, but Brysen knows she'd eventually get burned.

When she starts receiving threatening texts and someone tries to take her out in parking lot, the only person interested in keeping her safe is the one man she can't allow herself to have.

Sometimes being bold is the only way to stay alive. But can she let Race save her life . . . if it means losing herself to him?

My Thoughts:

The Welcome to the Point Series by Jay Crownover gives a whole new meaning to "bad boy."  The Point is a pit of poverty, and danger; like a tumor, the greedy, lascivious, and morally corrupt thrive.  The mentality is "survival of the fittest."  I love this series.  Ms. Crownover has a way of bringing The Point to life.  The way she describes everything, paints a visual so strong, that I can see the darkness of the city, and there is an electrical current of danger all around.

In Better When He's Bold, we get Race Hartman's story.  He used to live on "The Hill," in endless wealth, privilege, and over-indulgence.  However, he was numb and bored with his life.  When he met Shane "Bax" Baxter everything changed.  Bax came from "The Point," and once Race found out that he had a half-sister, Dovie, who lived in "The Point," it became his home too.  Race was disowned and cast out from his family on "The Hill," and had to make his own living.  He was extremely talented with numbers, and had the gift of a photographic memory.  He also was highly intelligent and had an edge to him.  He began making money as a bookie and loan shark, and led a life that included violence, and other illegal activities.

Brysen "Bry" Carter is Dovie's best friend.  At one time she lived a comfortable life as part of the upper middle class.  However, her life has been spiraling out of control ever since her mother's drunk driving caused a tragedy.  Now her mother's long term depression has turned in to full blown alcoholism, her father is a workaholic, and her younger sister, Karsen needs her.  Bry moves back home while she attends college to take care of her sister.  Money problems are abundant, so Bry works hard as a waitress on top of going to college full-time, and being a surrogate mother to her sister.  To top off her problems, Bry has a stalker, and the danger around her is escalating.

Race and Bry have been attracted to each other for quite a while.  However, Bry has tried to stay away from Race, because she does not condone the way he lives his life.  When Race helps Bry out, it is like a match is lit, and the attraction they feel towards one another turns in to a full-blown, all consuming, fiery passion.  Pretty soon they can't stay away from one another.  Their feelings for each other continue to grow, and the carnal hunger they feel towards one another cannot be denied.  Race is determined to protect Bry, and she is determined to find a way to fit in to his life.

Better When He's Bold was an excellent read.  I must admit, that I have come to expect nothing less when reading a book by Ms. Crownover.  She always brings the heat, great plot twists, and an amazing cast of characters.  Better When He's Bold kept me on the edge of my seat!  It was filled with action, suspense, eroticism, danger, and that intangible thing that keeps you completely mesmerized.  I can't wait for Titus' story next.  He is a straight-edged cop and Bax's half-brother.  I predict that a "bad girl" is going to turn his world upside down!  I can't wait to see what happens in the Welcome to the Point Series next!  I hope Booker and Karson get their own story.  I fell in love with Booker, who was hired as Bry's bodyguard in this story.  Karsen is only sixteen in this story, but I'm hoping that when she comes of age, she gets to be with Booker, who she has a huge crush on.

My Rating:

I give, Better When He's Bold, by Jay Crownover, 4.5 Edgy, Gritty, Erotic Burn, Bold Bookie, Broken Kingdom Filled Stars!

My Favorite Quotes:

"Brysen Carter was a good girl.  A pretty blonde from the right side of town, but, man, could she kiss like a dirty girl, like a girl from my side of town.  It made all the blood-heating, spine-tingling hunger she had eating at my insides get even more insistent."  (eARC, Loc. 327)

~Race

"Seems to me that when you add a pretty girl into the mix, that's when you give a dangerous man something to be dangerous for."  (eARC, Loc. 1362)

~Race

"...I understood she was perfect, so damn perfect just the way she was, and she didn't need to get dirty or mussed up.  She just needed me to bring it out in her.  I made her bold.  And all I could do was thank whoever it was that had been looking out for us all this time for that, because as she moved over me, played with me, tormented me to the edge of my control, she never looked away from me and I knew this was the girl that was not just my balance, my compass, but she was also my match in every way.  Not only would she take what I gave her, she would turn around and give it right back to me."  (eARC, Loc. 4579)
