Walking Disaster (Beautiful #2) by Jamie McGuire

Goodreads Summary:

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster. Can you love someone too much?
Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

What Made Me Swoon:

"I practiced this in my head the whole time we were on the bike, so just here me out.  Travis-  I know we're fucked-up, all right?  I'm impulsive and hot tempered, and you get under my skin like no one else.  You act like you hate me one minute, and then you need me the next.  I never get anything right, and I don't deserve you...but I fucking love you, Abby.  I love you more than I've loved anyone or anything, ever.  When you're around, I don't need booze or money or the fighting or the one-night stands...all I need is you.  You're all I think about.  You're all I dream about.  You're all I want."  (Walking Disaster ARC, Loc. 2471)

Gr’s Summary

Hellish Nightmare...

If seventeen-year-old Seth Bradson were to describe his life in two words, those would be the two he’d choose. Seth prefers to cope with his crappy existence by spending his days in a drug-induced haze. But when Ali Carson steps into his life, Seth finds something he’s subconsciously been seeking—a new drug, one that consumes his mind unlike any other.

Love.

In a moment of unforgivable weakness, Seth allows Ali to try crystal meth, his most addictive temptation.  This single event begins the unraveling of both their lives and forces Seth to learn the definition of regret the hard way.

The Way Ria Sees It

Wow.

Just.

Wow.

I have to say this book isn’t peaches and cream at all.  If you're looking for a light fun read, then this isn’t the book for you!  This is a story about real life, a life that isn’t shinny or pretty, or a farce.  It’s a story of darkness, and struggle, and escape.  To be quite honest, I myself, live in a bubble, a happy bubble where I like to read about love, and angels, and fluffy things that make my heart flutter. Shattered soul will definitely impact your life.   It will reach a dark place, and show you how painful life can be. Even when things seem perfect on the outside, this story will show you that pain doesn’t discriminate on social class, even with the perfect family, one can feel alone and in despair.

S-hame, what Seth feels to the core, but he's lost, and can't seem to correct his path.
H-ate, for his life, for his fathers abandonment, but mostly for his own cowardice.
A-li, Seth’s glimmer of hope, a love he thought he would never have.
T-ears I shed them for both Seth, and Ali, and for everything that should have been theirs but wasn’t.
T-orture for the things that Seth wanted to change but could not.
E-nvy, of a life that was taken from him, a childhood full of happiness and love.
R-egret, if only Seth could change one small decision, everything could have been different.
E-mpathy vs Apathy, we need to learn to help and understand one and other, and stop turning a blind eye.
D-espair what I feel for these characters.

S-adness that things could not have had a different outcome.
O-utrage for the betrayal and pain that people caused.
U-gliness and cruelty towards blood, and family beyond the point of return.
L-ove, that wasn’t enough, but was everything and all that mattered in the end.

This is a book that will make you want to hug your loved ones, and appreciate the laughs, and the smiles that we experience on a daily basis.  I could not put this book down.   I read every agonizing word from beginning to end, and sadly accepting things the way they were.  No one had any control of the things happening around them, and it broke my heart.  I highly recommend this book, because everyone should see what life can be like, and be grateful for the love that surrounds them. Our loved ones are precious, even if not plentiful ,they make us laugh and smile.   We should be grateful for that. Shattered Soul shows us exactly why.

My Rating

4.0 Heart wrenching, Soul shattering, Life changing, Earth shaking Stars. This is a read that will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.

Ro's Take on this Journey

Seth Bradson is a teenager, who walks around with a disheveled appearance, shaggy brown hair, and as he puts it, "muddy brown eyes."   Seth goes every day to school in wrinkled clothing, baggy shorts with holes in them, and doesn't care what he looks like.   He is being brought up, (if you can call it that), in a house with a drunken mother, and his half-baked, drug dealing, sadistic, controlling, scumbag brother, Calvin.  He fears his brother's wrath, is disgusted by his lack of ethics, but does what he's told, and watches his mouth.  His brother gets him to sell drugs for him at school.  He does it without a fight.  Seth knows no other life.  He only knows that his life stinks, and that it's in his genes, because his brother told him his father was a drug dealer, that ingested his own drugs, like Calvin.  His father left when Seth was three, and from that point on his mother worked till he was 11.  Then, his mother slowly began drinking herself to death.  Seth goes to bed every night with a bowl of marijuana, and wakes up every morning with a drug hangover.  At other times of day, and, or night, he ingests pills, and inhales Crystal Meth, at his brother's intimidation.   Seth's motto is, "Life's a bitch, and then you die."  This is his life, until he meets, Ali Carson, "his angel," that makes him want more out of his life.  Ali has long tanned legs, huge blue eyes, and a gorgeous smile. She is beautiful, innocent, and trusting.  She comes from a well to do family, the complete opposite of  Seth's.

The beginning of every day starts the same for Seth.   He showers, walks down the hall, and searches through the left over cigarette butts, (of his brother and his friends, from the night before), for a decent butt to smoke.  As Seth makes his way down the hall, I do too.  The smell of cigarettes, and smoke, fills my lungs, he proceeds to the ashtray filled with ashes and soot, and I can smell the pungent odor of the stale cigarettes through my nostrils, and feel the grit that he feels on his fingers.  My stomach begins to turn, as I read Ms. Snyder's descriptions.  She has a way of making me feel everything, as I am reading it. The pain Seth feels for never having a mother that really cares for him, or stands up for him, is heart- wrenching. This book is a complete 360 from the prior novella I reviewed of Ms. Snyder's,The Hereafter.  Yet, she pulls it off, and does a great job!

This novel  is not pretty.  It made me reel, with a roller coaster of emotions.  I feel that this book should be displayed in every school, and be a part of the required reading.  This is a book that will teach kids the dangers of drugs, the facts about how fast addiction can happen, and the fact that whether you're a good person, or a bad person, rich or poor, the end result could cost you your life.  Seth and Ali both grew as individuals, yet, not in the same direction.  After completing this novel, it left a hole in my heart, and an overwhelming sadness.  Get your kleenex ready, because readers, you will be crying all day long!!!

Ms. Snyder spins a web of love, euphoria, adulation, danger, hostility, and rage.  She has got a special gift for making the reader feel everything she has written.  By the end of this book, you will feel empty, and depleted.  It drained me emotionally, and will have me thinking about it for a very long time to come.

I give this novel 4 smoke filled, drug induced, Heart Breaking, panic stricken Stars!

Win Apollyn by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Goodreads Summary:

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself

ARC For Review

Gr’s Summary
Life is sweet for Katherine Langley. A freshman at the University of Virginia, she is free from the drama of her parents’ dysfunctional marriage and ready to focus on studying to become a nurse. Her brother, Ben, belongs to the hottest fraternity on campus, and her new roommate, Emma, is beautiful and charming, a party girl whose answer for a hangover is happy hour. She is also a psychopath.

When Katherine’s obsessive-compulsive overprotective brother succumbs to Emma’s charms and falls dangerously off-track, Katherine must save Ben from himself. Lives are threatened and someone disappears on New Year’s Day. The only evidence left: a single set of footprints in the snow.

From the university campus to a cozy cottage on Carter’s Creek, Virginia, Saving Ben is a haunting tale of love and loyalty, anger management, substance abuse, and betrayal.

The Way I See It

One of the many reasons I love to read is, being able to immerse myself in the story.  I loved this book.  Not only could I not stop turning the pages, but I felt like I was next to the characters, feeling what they felt.  This book literally plays out like a movie...Fingers crossed I’d love to see the catfight on the silver screen. ;)

S- abotage, It seems like cuckoo cachoo Emma will stop at nothing to hurt Ben and Katherine’s bond.
A- nger, doesn’t begin to cover my emotions towards Emma, deserves the worst because she is the worst!
V- iolence, is a drug that, unfortunately, afflicts everyone in this story.
I- ndependent and strong, two of Katherine’s best qualities.
N- erve-wrecking, throughout the entire book, I was on edge waiting for the answers.
G- uilt, for the things that could not be changed no matter how many times Kat revisited the situation.

"B- eauty is as beauty does," is one of my favorite lines in Saving Ben.
E- nvy, should have been Emma’s middle name!
N- eglect, finally recognized and repaired to mend a broken family.

I like to keep my reviews 100% spoiler free but I will say this, Emma gets her just desserts!  I was saddened by all of the hurt and pain she spread.  I’m very happy to say that in the end everything is as it should be.  For a highly addictive entertaining read, I highly recommend this book!   It has elements of fun, drama, love, betrayal, compromise, forgiveness, and most of all a huge element of the deep bonds of friendship. I devoured this book and had a great time doing it!

My Fav’s

Katherine

Kitty, okay not only is this name super cute, this is one amazing lady!!  Not only is she dependable, she is honest, and strong, and all of the things Emma is not.  Kat leads with her heart.   She is kind and loving, even when the recipients are undeserving.

Ben

I love Ben because he has flaws.  Sadly, his biggest flaw was giving his heart to the wrong person.  Ben is used, and toyed with throughout the book.  It broke my heart to see his pain.  I fell in love with his joyful personality, and the way he was able to overcome adversity.

My Rating

4.0 Honey, Chi Delta, Prison, Missing person, Tormented Soul, Family Despair, Mended relationship, Unyielding Love filled Stars!  This is a great read if you want to get lost in intrigue, and drama. Go pick it up and let your emotions flare.

About the Author

I wrote a novel, SAVING BEN, in honor of my brother, the boy I worshipped, the man I could not save. It’s not a memoir, but a story about the special bond between siblings. I'm a wife and mother of two teenagers. I have lived in Richmond, Virginia, for seventeen years, a city I love for its history and traditions. Personal experience with my brother inspired me to become involved with the leadership symposium in my son’s school where I’ve helped bring in speakers to raise parents’ awareness of the alcohol and drug problems children face. When I’m not steering volunteer committees or working on my next novel, I can be found swimming laps or playing tennis.

DEAR CASSIE

By:  Lisa Burstein
Release: March 5, 2013
Pub. Entangled Teen
Pages:  352

Summary:

What if the last place you should fall in love is the first place that you do?

You’d think getting sent to Turning Pines Wilderness Camp for a month-long rehabilitation “retreat” and being forced to re-live it in this journal would be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.

You’d be wrong.

There’s the reason I was sent to Turning Pines in the first place: I got arrested. On prom night. With my two best friends, who I haven’t talked to since and probably never will again. And then there’s the real reason I was sent here. The thing I can’t talk about with the guy I can’t even think about.

What if the moment you’ve closed yourself off is the moment you start to break open?

But there’s this guy here. Ben. And the more I swear he won’t—he can’t—the deeper under my skin he’s getting. After the thing that happened, I promised I’d never fall for another boy’s lies.

Dear Cassie, by Lisa Burstein, was a great coming of age story.  I enjoyed that it was written partially in journal format, as she writes in her, "assessment diary," and I felt like I was able to read Cassie's most intimate thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  The main character, Cassie, has been sent to a rehabilitation camp after she was stood up at prom, (along with her friends Lila, and Amy,) and they stole marijuana from one of the guys, and drove around under the influence.  Cassie was the only one out of the trio to get punished, because Lila disappeared, and Amy turned Cassie in, as part of a plea bargain.  Cassie's only options were to go to jail, or attend, Turning Pines Wilderness Camp.  She decided to go to the camp, thinking it would be an easy, relaxing experience.  She was very wrong...

I enjoyed reading, Dear Cassie.  I connected with the characters, and the story that they had to tell.  The authenticity of the characters, and reality of what they had dealt with in the past, and were currently dealing with, pulled me into the story.  Cassie had an abusive, alcoholic mother, and a father and brother that weren't around often, because they were in the military.  Even when Cassie's father was home, he paid little to no attention to her.  The only person Cassie could depend on was her older brother.  They had a very close relationship, and he was the only person in her life that made her feel loved, and cared about.

Cassie was such a well-devoloped, three-dimensional, and complex character.  During the story, she went through the emotions of self-hate, anger, shame, attraction, acceptance, and finally hope.  I sympathized with her plight, and was fascinated, as, little by little, Cassie's secret was revealed.  I understood why she felt the way she did, and felt so much sadness for her.  Cassie was full of anger, sarcasm, snarkiness, and pushed everyone away.  She wasn't one to share her feelings, cry, or act friendly.  At the camp, everyone was referred to by their last name.  In Camp, with Cassie, we got to meet the girls camp leader, Rawe, (who tried to help Cassie,) and the boy's camp leader, Nerone.  We also met Cassie's room mates, Nez, (who was boy crazy, and always trying to get Cassie in trouble,) and Troyer, (who chose not to talk to anyone, but eventually becomes good friends with Cassie.)  The boys living area was separated from the girls, but they still interacted with one another in various camp tasks, such as chopping wood, hiking, canoeing, camping, and many other things.  We got to meet Eagen, Leisner, and Stravalaci.  They were supporting characters.  The boy that wanted Cassie's heart was Ben.  I fell in love with Ben.  No matter how many times Cassie tried to push him away, he never left her, and he only wanted to make her laugh, smile, and be happy.  He saw past the facade that Cassie portrayed to everyone else.  Ben was sensitive, compassionate, patient, and persistent.  He saw Cassie, for who she really was, and fell in love with her.  I wish there were more Ben's out there!

I loved how, Dear Cassie, was written.  It was simplistic, fast-paced, and very readable.  I enjoyed the way Ms. Burstein revealed glimpses of what was behind Cassie's facade.  I liked how there was mystery behind what Cassie's secret was, and how it was revealed little by little throughout Cassie's flashback memories, and diary entries.  As Cassie's secret, along with the other teens secrets were revealed, there was a clear message.  It was a message about hope, and letting go of self- loathing, forgiveness of self, empowerment, leaving the past behind, and looking toward the future.

I give, Dear Cassie, by Lisa Burstein, 4 Soul-Searching, Learning to Let Go, and Begin Anew Stars.  This is a story of substance that deals with letting go of your past, learning to forgive yourself, and embrace a new beginning!  I recommend, Dear Cassie, to readers that enjoy the complexity, and growth that occurs during the teenage years.  It is a story that offers insight into the psyche of a troubled teen, learning to deal with her demons, and having the courage, strength, and fortitude, to let happiness in.

"I never cried.  I didn't even cried on the night I was arrested.  Lila cried like a fucking drama queen and Amy seemed too scared to do anything but stare at her nails.  But I was crying now, and that scared me more than anything because it let me know how scared I must truly have been."  (EARC, 84)

"There was also a humming in my ears from the nicotine.  It could only be from the nicotine.  It had nothing to do with being outside, at night, alone with Ben.  It had nothing to do with Ben coming to the cabin and taking me instead of Nez and it definitely had nothing to do with the stars above us shinning like they were the sky's tiara."  (EARC, 100)

"You need to live this life, she whispered.  You can live it with regret, or you can let it go.  And even though I had no idea how, with the two of us having helped each other get here, get to this place, I knew she was right."  (EARC, 201)

Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers at Eastern Washington University and is glad to finally have it be worth more than the paper it was printed on. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her very patient husband, a neurotic dog and two cats.

She wrote her first story when she was in second grade. It was a Thanksgiving tale from the point of view of the turkey from freezer to oven to plate. It was scandalous.
