GR's Summary:
Playing the occasional club gig just isn’t cutting it for twenty-two-year-old cellist Skyler Canby, who’s trying to support herself and her mother back home in Kentucky. Persuaded by her best friend Beth to accompany her on an audition for the first feature film launched by Blackwood Entertainment, she figures why not? Beth’s a shoe-in for the lead, but maybe Skyler’s newly dyed pink hair will help her stand out enough to score a small speaking part.

Never in her wildest dreams does Skyler imagine she’ll land the lead role or that she’ll have her shoes knocked off her feet by the kiss her audition partner, Grey Blackwood, plants on her—a kiss that feels very real and not at all “acted. ”

After throwing a party that causes thousands of dollars of damage to his older brother’s home, reckless musician Grey Blackwood gets roped into working off his debt on the set of his CEO brother’s newest project. Grey spends his days fetching coffee and doing odd jobs around the studio, but he lives for nights when he performs with his band. He knows if he can stay focused, success as a singer is just around the corner. But that’s tough with a distracting pink-haired girl occupying his every waking thought.

Skyler and Grey have every reason to resist each other. But, like a song neither of them can get out of their minds, they have no choice but to go where the music takes them.

My Thoughts:

The Boomerang Series has been a lot of fun.  The first two books centered around Boomerang, a matchmaking site, and the characters involved in the business.  Bounce is about two secondary characters from the previous books.  We get Grey Blackwell (Adam Blackwell's younger brother), and Skyler Canby's (Mia's room mate and good friend's) story.

I was thrilled when I found out that Grey was getting his own story.  He's a character that I found sexy, charming, irresponsible, and a bit lost.  He is currently living with Adam, his half brother, because he had a falling out with his stepmother months ago.  When Grey throws a huge party that wrecks Adam's home while he's on vacation, Adam returns home very upset.  His solution is to have Grey work for him and his partner Brooks until all of the damages incurred are covered.  While Grey isn't happy about his current position, he understands that he must take responsibility for his actions.

Skylar has a passion for playing the cello.  Her good friend Beth talked her in to taking acting lessons for six months and she loved it.  Now there is an audition for Bounce, a movie that Adam and Brooks are producing.  Beth wants to try out for the leading role, and Skylar hopes to get a small part, to help her with her mounting bills.  The leading male, Garrett, is sick, and Adam has Gray fill in for auditions, so that he can find the female lead.  When Skylar auditions with Grey, they have major sparks, and share an explosive kiss on stage!

Skylar and Grey end up spending a lot of time together, as she is cast in the female lead, and he continues to work off his debt to his brother.  There's no denying the chemistry and connection that these two share.  Gray has a major crush on Skylar and wants to pursue her.  Unfortunately, Skylar thinks Grey is too young for her (he's nineteen and she's twenty-two,) and too irresponsible.  Skylar and Grey end up forming a strong friendship, and as their attraction continues to grow, she will have to re-evaluate her decision.

Bounce had such a great set of characters.  I loved revisiting Mia and Ethan, and Adam and Ali from the previous books.  I really loved getting to know Skylar's leading man, Garrett.  He was great at giving advice, and made me laugh throughout the story a lot!

Most of all, I enjoyed getting to know Skylar and Grey on a deeper level.  Skylar was a people pleaser, and put a lot of pressure on herself, in order to make everyone around her happy.  She was a talented musician, hard worker, and great friend.  Skylar showed character growth by learning to put herself first, and taking charge of her life and happiness.  Gray was so sweet, romantic, attentive, supportive, and a great friend to Skylar.  His dream was to make it big as a lead singer in his band, and he had so much passion for his music.  However, he also had a lot of growing up to do, and had a tendency to run away from his problems.  He made the most character growth in the story, and I enjoyed having a front seat while he went from a boy to a man right before my eyes.

The plot of the story was a bit slow and stagnant at times, but then it would pick up.  Near the last third of the story, the pacing was perfect.  I loved the ending of Bounce, and how it brought all of the main characters, and most of the secondary characters from the previous books together.

My Rating:

I give, Bounce, by Noelle August, 3 Beautiful Friendship, Budding Romance, Growing Up, and Finding What Make's You Happy Filled Stars!

Book Excerpt:
BOUNCE
—a Boomerang novel—
 By Noelle August

Two aspiring musicians must choose between their careers…and their sizzling attraction for each other in the final Boomerang novel.

 Skyler's Point-of-View Chapter 20

Good lord in a basket, it’s him all right. Grey. Illuminated by the golden lights coming on along Venice Boulevard. With suds and water sluicing off his ridiculously ripped body, cascading from his massive tattooed biceps, running down his taut muscled abdomen. His swimsuit sags dangerously low, clinging to his sturdy thighs, making, um, everything, pretty evident.
     And evidently pretty impressive.
Probably, this would be a good time to actually speak some words, but even in a town full of hot, hot people, this is kind of stratospheric.
“Yep, it’s me.” Grey reaches back to turn off the shower, which breaks the spell, so I can at least avert my gaze like a decent person. Then he rubs a towel vigorously over his gleaming body and tucks it around his waist.
He has a strange look on his face—peevish, embarrassed, and it feels suddenly like we’re intruding on something. Or maybe it’s just me. I think about that moment in my trailer. His fingers on my skin. My wanting and not knowing what to want.
“Uh, so, what are you up to?” I ask in an effort to win the prize for most obvious question ever. “I mean, I can see what you were up to.” Seriously, Sky? “But, uh, were you just in the water? What brings you out here?”
“I’m crashing nearby. At the garage where my band rehearses.”
     “Really?” asks Mia. “Why?”
Grey looks from me to Mia and then back to me, weighing something. Maybe whether or not he can trust us. He’s got this hot, coiled energy all the time, like he’s always holding back. Like he’s an animal caged inside a human body.
“Just staying there for a few weeks.”
“Because of your mom?” I ask. It was obvious from their interaction on set that there’s some bad blood there, though compared to my mom, she seems kind and thoughtful, whip-smart and curious without being overbearing. Which makes sense, given her offspring.
Then I remember that Grey’s not really her offspring. He said “stepmother,” and the way he said it really answers my question.
Which is good, because he doesn’t actually answer it. Instead, he gathers up his stuff—surfboard, wetsuit—and gives us a grin. “I gotta head out,” he says, as though nothing’s hanging there between us. He looks away for a second, following the path of a guy in an Obama mask as he weaves his way up the boardwalk on a ribbon-festooned unicycle. “Told some friends I’d hook up with them tonight.”
“Wait,” says Mia. “So, you’re just sleeping in a garage? Like on an air-mattress or something?”
Grey shrugs. “A couch. It’s okay.”
“And taking freezing cold showers out on the beach? That doesn’t sound great, does it, Sky?”
“No, it doesn’t,” I say, but I’m afraid of where she’s going with this.
“Can’t you stay at a hotel or something?”
He shakes his head. “Money’s a little tight right now. I’m giving Adam almost every penny to pay him back for the house, and I don’t really have…” Again, he goes silent, and I can feel, literally, the tension of him wanting to talk, wanting to say more to someone. Needing it.
“Why don’t you come stay at our place?” Mia blurts. We have that in common. The blurting thing. “I mean, I’m just about all moved out, so there’s room.”
     Ay, dios. No. No.
But I can’t say anything. I can’t tell my best friend, who knows I’m talking to Brooks, starting to maybe, sort of, think about where that could go, that having Grey in my apartment, so close all the time, is a very dangerous, very bad idea.
Grey shakes his head. “Nah, I appreciate it, but I’m cool here. I promise. Thanks, though.” He takes a few steps toward a squat gray building with weather-beaten shutters and a tiny, shed-like garage in the back. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
“Hang on,” says Mia, pulling me along. She gives me a look, tipping her head in his direction, like she’s tapping me in for the debate. “You’re cool with it, right, Sky?”
“Of course.” Not. In no way. “But it seems like he’s got it under control here. So, if—”
My words disappear, though, because Grey’s pulled up the garage door, the muscles of his broad back and shoulders shifting smoothly as he thrusts the door up along its rusting track.
“See?” he says, pointing to a lumpy white couch sporting what looks like a half-century’s worth of mystery stains—a perfect complement to the funk of beer and weed and sweat potent enough to make my eyes water. “Perfectly fine, right?”
But, like me, he’s lousy at hiding his feelings. Even turned away to shove some empty beer cans into a garbage bag, his body language tells me everything.
He doesn’t want to be here in this musty space, crowded with furniture and audio equipment, the only natural light coming in from the tiny half-moon windows set into the garage door, which faces a dim alleyway.
“You should come stay with us,” I say, surprising the hell out of us both. “I mean, this is…”
“It’s fine,” Grey insists. “I don’t need much, and I’m hardly ever here.”
I think how different he is from Brooks, who says what he means, tells you—without hesitation—what he wants.
     “Come on,” says Mia.
“Seriously,” he tells us. “It’s really nice of you to ask, but I’m fine. I can’t afford—”
“I paid up on the place through the end of the lease,” Mia says. “You can just chip in on food and utilities. I’m sure you can manage that, right? It’s only for a few weeks. And you’d be rooming with two awesome, super hot girls. How can you say no to that?”
He looks at me, and I can see he’s worried about the same things I am. Rooming together. Being too close, constantly one second away from making a really dumb choice. He’s young and too reckless for me. And a musician, on top of it all. He’s everything I don’t need sharing my space.
But something tugs at me, makes me put all of those concerns aside. I see it in his smoke-gray eyes, which are so alive, so deep and full of thoughts. Some pain or fear lives there. Something that makes it so hard for him to accept. To take a simple kindness. It’s not just about me but about trusting. Anything.
Seeing that, I can’t let him spend another night in this crappy place. Just…alone.
“You should come home with us,” I say. “It will be…a lot better than this, I promise.”

Noel August Interview:

1.  This is the third and FINAL novel! Any insight you can provide our aspiring writers on how to approach a final novel in a trilogy?

Lorin: I think Veronica’s the perfect person to comment on this because she’s worked on both a trilogy with a complete arc spread over three novels AND a series with three companion novels. From my perspective, though, I wanted to make sure readers had some sense of where the protagonists from the other stories (Mia, Ethan, Alison, and Adam) ended up, as well as to show some progression in the world of Boomerang, which focused first on the website and eventually on the expansion into movies.

Veronica: Approach the final novel in a trilogy with plenty of wine and a good sense of humor! Kidding aside, it’s been the most enjoyable book for me to write, twice now. Middle books, however…Not fun.

2.  How does Skyler and Grey’s relationship differ from any of those we have seen in the series thus far?

Lorin: For me, one of the ways their relationship differs is that they’re both a bit more raw, a bit less self-assured than Mia, Ethan, Adam, and Alison (though of course, those characters have their vulnerabilities, as well). Beyond that, they’re also separated more for psychological/emotional reasons than for logistical reasons (e.g., Ethan and Mia were forbidden to date due to company policy). They’re both passionate about the same thing—music—and both figuring out how to juggle life and love and family commitments. I feel like they’re both rougher in some ways than our other characters and also more tender, which makes putting them together really exciting!

Veronica: As the youngest hero we’ve had in the books, Grey brings a visceral quality. It’s just part of his nature. He’s unstudied. Rough, as Lorin says. He says what’s on his mind and feels what he feels, and everybody just needs to deal with it. I loved seeing how that worked with Skyler, who’s this dynamic, sweet, wise girl. I won’t say much more about how they interact, so as to not spoil the fun, but they had mad chemistry. So great together.

3.  What does the New Adult genre mean to you? Any favorite authors/books that you’ve been reading?

Lorin: For me, it’s about capturing that really exciting, tumultuous, fraught, complex time when people are making their first real steps into adulthood, into the world of meaningful work, meaningful love and/or sex, adult dynamics with family, etc. Favorite authors in NA: Too many! Sophie Jordan, Megan Erickson, Colleen Hoover, Abbi Glines. I don’t know if she’s really characterized this way, but I’m going to add Rainbow Rowell to the NA pantheon as well. Always great.

Veronica: All of the above for me, too. And Jennifer Armentrout (J. Lynn) is a favorite, Cora Carmack…the list really does go on. I’m also a huge fan of Sarah Maas, and I think you can make an argument that A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is NA paranormal fantasy. Also fabulous.

4.  Music and film play a big part in this one. What are some of your favorite artists and movies you’d love to share?

Lorin: Music: Right now, I’m listening to X Ambassadors, Jamie XX, Arcade Fire, Grouplove, Blur, Ed Sheeran, Elle King… I’ll stop myself here! Movies: Oh, the agony of picking! Shawshank Redemption; Defending Your Life; Broadcast News; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; and, like Beth and Titus in the book, pretty much anything by Richard Linklater or Wes Anderson. Plus Pixar. Inside Out made me cry approximately 2,153 times.

Veronica: I struggle with this question too, because so many of my favorites are going to sound outdated, BUT: GLADIATOR, the BOURNE IDENTITY trilogy, SHINE, THE PRINCESS BRIDE. See? Not a lot of recent films here. I’m more a fan of television series these days. Can’t get enough of OUTLANDER or VIKINGS. I also just binge-watched PARKS AND RECREATION this month. Love that series. And I live with three males so if the television is on, it’s usually on a baseball or football game, which is great with me. Confession: I love sports. And I love books. Gasp! Shocking, right?

5.  Choosing between personal career success and love is a major challenge people struggle with every day, millennials especially because of the pressure of success these days. What are some of the issues Skyler and Grey (and even some of the other Boomerang characters!) go through that can help some of the readers realize what’s truly important?

Lorin: What stands out for me is that all the characters are working out how to balance their careers with not only their romantic lives but where they fit into their families, how their families add to, or detract from, their professional and creative desires, and what it means for them to go their own ways, in work and in love. There’s a point in which almost all of them have to get clear of family expectations or legacies and decide who they are and what they love, independent of all that.

Veronica: I think the answer is right there in your question. Each of our characters are trying to figure out what’s important. They’re asking themselves: What matters to me most? How do I want to spend my time? How do I want to start—and shape—my life?

6.  In my opinion, BOUNCE reads more of a standalone than the first two in the series! Any intention, or was that the way the book flowed?

Lorin: Just the way the book flowed, though I think we hope they all stand alone pretty well!

Veronica: Perhaps this one feels more standalone because the setting moved away from the BOOMERANG offices a bit more than in the last two novels. We’re mostly on a movie set in this one. And, yeah. It wasn’t planned; it just happened!

7.  Did the long distance writing get any easier as each book went on? The writing is so seamless, it boggles my mind there were two brains at the helm of the manuscript!

Lorin: Aw, thanks! And yes, book three was a really fun and seamless experience. As seems to always be the case, book two is always the bear, and I think we’d both say that was the case. But I feel lucky to work with someone as dedicated and brilliant as Veronica. DEFINITELY makes it easy AND inspiring!

Veronica: Thanks, Lorin! And likewise! I felt like we found our groove early with this one. It was a blast to write. And, yes. All Book Twos involve some agony. It’s one of Nature’s Laws.

8.  We are tearfully saying goodbye to the Boomerang clan. What will you miss most about these characters, and series?

Lorin: Honestly, I think I’m in denial about this actually BEING the last book. Veronica and I have talked about other characters’ stories, so they’re living on in our imaginations and, who knows, may end up with works of their own someday! I would LOVE to know what kind of dude could make an honest woman of Cookie! ;-)

Veronica: Ha-ha. Cookie does deserve her own book, doesn’t she? I know I’ll miss all the main characters, and so many of the secondary characters, too. I love that we write about genuinely good people—who make mistakes, sure—but who are generally trying to do the right thing. No knock against the darker heroes and heroines out there, of course, but these stories have been a welcome source of cheer for me. I believe this world can always use more laughter, heart, and positivity.

9.  Dare we ask – any favorites?

Lorin: Cookie! She just cracks me up, and she’s so loyal to Adam. Also love Paolo and the gang from the Boomerang offices, plus Grey, Grey, Grey. Sigh…

Veronica: Grey. Mia. Cookie. Rhett… Geez. Is it fair to say I think I love them all?

Excerpt:

“D-a-a-a-d,” Ruby shrieks from upstairs.

It’s a sound that once used to cause all the hair to stand up on my arms and on more than one occasion caused me to go tearing after the call of my youngest daughter thinking she was being murdered by an intruder. I’ve since come to recognize that particular shrill cry as one of excitement and wonder, and I can’t help but grin over what Ruby is possibly into now. At almost five years old, she refuses to accept the concept of a well-mannered, indoor voice and goes balls to the wall in everything she does.

“Is the house on fire, Rubes?” I call out.

Her little voice shouts back to me in a squawk. “No.”

“Have aliens landed?” I keep my voice just loud enough to carry up the stairs but still decibels below her own.

“No,” she yells, and there . . . right there . . . that’s a little giggle from her.

“Did Timmy fall down the well?”

“No, Dad . . . but you have to come here,” she yells, and, to give her credit, it’s toned down just a bit. When I don’t answer her right away, she calls down in a sweet voice that makes my heart pitter-patter. “Please, Dad.”

Brilliant, little brat. Throwing in some manners to throw me off my game.

“I’ll be right there,” I tell her as I finish the last of Violet’s braid and manage to efficiently bind it with a hair elastic. Leaning over, I place a kiss on her head. “All done, dreamy dwarf.”

Violet leans her head back and gives me an upside-down grin. I love the sprinkle of freckles on her nose and it compels me to kiss her again.

“Do me a favor,” I tell her as I turn toward the living room. “Get the cereal and milk out for me while I go see what your sister needs?”

I don’t bother waiting to see what she does, because Violet has become my metaphorical right hand over the last few months. While she still loves for me to braid her hair and help with her homework, she’s also relished taking on a bit of a caretaker role since the girls moved in with me permanently this past summer.

They’ve been here almost six months and I actually feel like I know what the hell I’m doing now. It wasn’t always like that, and thank God for Kate’s help or I would have gone insane in those first few months of becoming a single parent of two little girls. Kate patiently helped me establish a routine and taught me how to braid hair, distinguish excited shrieks from cries of pain, and most important . . . how to conduct the perfect princess tea party.

I skirt my way through the living room, bending over to pick up one of Ruby’s dolls from the floor, and bound up the stairs taking two at a time. I find Ruby in the bathroom that she and Violet share, bent over the toilet and peering at something.

She shares the same dark hair and gray eyes as Violet, except her locks spring out everywhere in a mass of tiny curls. I have no idea where that came from, but assume it’s a rogue strand of ancestral DNA from either me or my soon-to-be ex-wife, Hensley. Both of us, as well as Violet, have fairly straight hair, so Ruby is definitely dipping into the family gene pool with her wild curls, but damn . . . they totally fit with her personality. “What’s up?” I ask as I walk over to the toilet.

She straightens up, shoots me a grin, and points. “Look . . . a spider.”

I cautiously take a step forward and lean over, grimacing as I look into the bowl.

And holy shit . . . a spider the size of a T rex is floating on the surface, all eight legs spread out, bent and poised to look as if it’s ready to leap out and attach itself to my face. I suppress a full spinal shudder and reach a tentative hand toward the handle to flush it.

Two things happen almost simultaneously that take at least three years off my life.

The spider somehow manages to skitter across the water, the beast so large it actually creates waves, and Ruby shrieks at me, “No! Don’t kill it, Dad!”

It is with a major blow to my pride—as a man, as a dad, as a six-foot, six-inch professional hockey player nicknamed the Brick because I’m as big and tough as a brick wall—that I jump backward at least two feet from the monster-infested toilet and banshee-crying sprite, causing my hip to slam into the corner of the sink.

“Shit,” I curse loudly, and Ruby’s eyes go round, followed by her lips.

“Oh, Dad . . . that’s a bad word.”

No shit.

I smile at her as I rub my hip. That’s definitely going to leave a bruise. “Sorry, Rubes. I’ll put a dollar in the swear jar.”

She merely nods her acceptance of my apology and turns worried eyes back to the toilet.

“You have to save it,” she implores. Yeah . . . that’s not going to happen. Not now. Not ever.

“Sure, baby,” I tell her as I take her by the shoulder and turn her toward the bathroom door. I swear the spider glares at me with a million red, evil eyes. “Go on down and get breakfast. Violet’s fixing your cereal. I’ll get the spider out.”

“Okay,” Ruby says as she pulls away from me, but continues to give me instructions. “But let it out the front door and I’ll bring it some food later.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I assure her as she disappears down the stairs. When I hear her feet hit the bottom landing, I turn toward the toilet, intent on a quick flush to put me out of my misery.

Except when I look in the bowl, the fucking thing is gone.

I’ll just go ahead and admit it. Spiders scare the living hell out of me. I have no clue why, and while I would battle the biggest, baddest monster to the death for my daughters, I’d much rather flush a little spider down the toilet.

I immediately scramble backward out of the bathroom, grabbing the doorknob and shutting it quickly behind me. My heart is racing a million miles an hour, the thought of that furry hell beast now loose in my house.

Just one more thing on the list of things I still need to do today.

Get the girls dressed and ready for school.

Take the girls to school.

Clean up the spilled laundry detergent.

Finish the laundry.

Arm myself with a can of hairspray and a lighter to torch the rogue spider in the bathroom.

Pick up my dry cleaning.

Work out.

Team practice.

Pick up the girls from Kate and Zack’s house. Dinner. Baths. Story time and cuddling. Go to bed because I’ll be exhausted.

Easy as fucking pie, and I’ll get up and do it all over again the next day with a smile on my face. I’m finding life as a single parent isn’t as daunting as I thought it would be and I’ve finally found my groove.

Lindy's Thoughts:

I enjoy a good sports romance, and the Cold Fury Hockey Series is one that I would recommend to those of you who enjoy this sub-genre.  As I've gotten to know this lovable cast of hockey players, and their significant others, they have come to life for me.  Alex & Sutton, Garrett & Olivia, Zack & Kate, and now Ryker & Gray are all like one huge family, and they feel as if they are my friends as well.  Each of these stories are fantastic, but my absolute favorites are Garret and Zack's stories!

Ryker Evans has been separated a year from his wife Hensley.  She cheated on him, and left him for his younger teammate.  Since this happened, he transferred to the Cold Fury Hockey team.  Even though he has proven to be a great goalie, he is considered old as far as the game of hockey is concerned.  Therefore, he is out to prove to his team and the fans, that he has what it takes to be the best goalie in the league.  His whole focus is his career, and his two young daughters, Violet and Ruby, who Hensley left with him so that she could travel with her boy toy.

Gray Brannon has just been promoted to general manager of the Cold Fury Hockey Team by her father.  She has been scouting for the team for years, and is the one who wanted Ryker to be a part of the Cold Fury.  She saw something special in him.  While Gray has excellent credentials, and is a genius, it is unconventional to have a female general manager.  To top it off, she wants to use statistics to get the Cold Fury in to the championship.  Gray deals with opposition, sarcasm, and misogyny from the players along the way.

The only people who show her any outward support are her father and Ryker.  As Gray and Ryker spend time together, attraction flares, and friendship begins.  However, how can Gray and Ryker have a relationship when their careers pose a conflict of interest?  To top it off, Hensley wants Ryker back, and is determined to do what it takes to reunite her family.

Ryker and Gray were excellent characters.  I loved how Ryker wasn't the typical bad boy.  He wanted a monogamous relationship with someone whom he and his daughters would love.  He was a very dedicated and loving father.  He was also very romantic and sweet to Gray.  As far as hockey was concerned, he gave it his all.  I couldn't help but like him!

Gray was a strong, and intelligent lead.  She didn't let people walk all over her.  Yet, she also had a very sweet and soft side to her as well.  She was inexperienced as far as relationships were concerned, because she had always focused on her career.  Yet, I think she did a great job with navigating the     rough waters of her relationship with Ryker.

The secondary characters from previous books, as well as Ryker's children played a significant role in Ryker and Gray's story.  I love this whole cast!  The romance and sexy factor where off the charts!  Ryker managed to make me blush a few times!!!  The overall themes in this story had to do with taking chances when the odds are set against you, and finding your priorities in life.  I recommend this series!  It is excellent!

Rating:

I give, Ryker, by Sawyer Bennet, 4 Sexy Goalie Superstar, Combustible Passion, Sweet & Endearing Stars!!!

Mikki's Review:

I am a HUGE hockey fan. When there is a new sports romance that is invading my social news feed it's an automatic add to my TBR list, especially if it's about hockey. I had to chance to read all the books from Sawyer Bennett's Cold Fury Hockey series and they all have a special place in my heart. Zack still holds the number one spot has my favorite, but Alex, Garrett and Ryker are fantastic characters as well.

Ryker Evans is at the top of his game as the number one goalie for the Carolina Cold Fury. The end of the last hockey season is still fresh on his mind leaving him more determined than ever to make his best season yet. A lot of things have happened since he transferred teams. His marriage to Hensley is about to be history and he's been working hard to be the best daddy Violet and Ruby can have. Hensley's betrayal is still fresh, but for the sake of the girls he tries to get along  with her.

Things get complicated when Gray Brannon enters his life. She is the new GM of the Carolina Cold Fury and the number one reason why he got transferred to this hockey team. As days go by, their attraction grows and sparks fly. The more he spends time with Gray, the more he wants her in his life. What is in store for Gray and Ryker once their secret relationship is exposed?  Will their love for each other be strong enough to survive all the obstacle that will come their way?

Another fantastic addition to this wonderful series! Sawyer Bennett has been delivering solid, captivating, page-turning stories for all these wonderful characters. Like I mentioned before, I am a huge hockey fan. This book released just in time to get me ready for the next NHL season. It was fun to cheer for Ryker and his teammates has they got one step closer to their ultimate goal.

Gray and Ryker were great characters and my reading journey was a memorable one. Both these characters had a lot going on in their respective lives. Ryder was trying to get used to being a single dad. Tea parties and braiding hair was not what he was most comfortable with, but he would do anything for his girls. It was amazing to see how dedicated he was to both his career and family. Getting involved with his GM was not part of the plan, but when it comes to love, you can't control who you fall in love with.

Gray was an amazing heroine. At just thirty-one years old, she got named as one of the youngest general managers in the league. She was under a lot of pressure. Not only because she was the youngest GM in the league, but because she's the only female GM. It was not easy for her and not everybody accepted this decision. She had a lot to prove and she did! Her confidence and determination to bring her hockey team towards their ultimate goal was fascinating. I loved how she gave in to her feelings for Ryker. She knew she was playing with fire, but she listened to her heart and to nobody else.

This was another amazing reading journey! The chemistry between Gray and Ryker was blazing hot! The scenes between Ryker, Alex, Garrett and Zack were incredible! You can see that these characters are not only teammates, they are like brothers. It was nice to catch up with Alex, Sutton, Olivia, Garrett, Kate and Zack. I can't get enough of this series! I highly recommend it! :)

Rating:

Synopsis:

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Our Review of Overruled HERE

Lindy's Thoughts:

Emma Chase continues The Legal Briefs Series with a bang!  I don't know how she does it, but she manages to make me laugh, cry, smile, and swoon when reading her books.  In my opinion, Ms. Chase always brings her "A" game by delivering the very best that the romance genre has to offer.

Sustained is the second book in The Legal Briefs.  In the first book, Overruled, we met co-workers, best friends, and defense lawyers, Stanton Shaw, Sofia Santos, Jake Becker, and Brent Mason.  We got Stanton and Sofia's story first, and now we get Jake's story.

Jake Becker is career driven.  His goal is to make partner one day, and he never wants to be tied down to a woman or children.  His life consists of hard work as a successful defense attorney, quality time with his best friends, Stanton, Sofia, and Brent, and a revolving door of women that he uses strictly for his sexual needs.

Circumstances bring Chelsea McQuaid, and her six nieces and nephews in to his life.  Chelsea's brother and sister-in-law recently died in a car accident, and she is in over her head as the sole family member and guardian to their six children, ranging from six months old to fourteen years old.  Before Jake realizes it, he is falling for Chelsea and the six children.  His life becomes deeply entangled with the McQuaid's, and he has a difficult decision to make; become a family man, or let Chelsea and the children go.

Sustained was a story that spoke to my heart.  I felt so horrible for the pain, suffering, and loss that Chelsea and her nieces and nephews had to endure.  Chelsea was such a sweetheart.  She was loving, devoted, and selfless.  The kids each had their unique personalities, and won me over as well.  I couldn't help but love each and every one of them.  I laughed at some of their antics, and things that they said.  The cast of characters was so much fun, as well as endearing, and very likable.

It was wonderful watching Jake's transformation from womanizer to family man.  I like the person that Chelsea and the kids brought out in him.  He was fiercely protective, devoted, doting, and made me laugh with some of his advice.  Sustained had so many layers to it.  We get deep friendships, swoony and sensual romance, humor, and sentimentality.  This is a story that I highly recommend, and have added to my favorite's shelf.

Rating:

I give, Sustained, by Emma Chase, 5 Adorable, Heart-Melting, Heated, and Enchanting Stars!  If you are looking for a top-notch romance full of love, humor, and feeling, pick Sustained up and give it a read!  You will not want to put it down!

Mikki's Review:

Be still my beating heart!!! There is a new prince charming in town!!! Prepare to meet your next book boyfriend in Emma Chase's  new book in The Legal Briefs series. Emma Chase once again delivers a story filled with memorable moments that will leave a smile on your face and warm your heart.

Sustained is the story of Jake Becker and Chelsea McQuaid. Jake is loving is life. He's a successful defense attorney, he's surrounded by 3 amazing best friends and the ladies love him. When Chelsea McQuaid walks into his life, his world his turned upside down. The more time he spends with Chelsea and her family, the more he wants to be a part of their life.  Changing diapers, showing up at the principal's office and singing One Direction songs were never part of the plan and neither was falling in love with Chelsea. As days go by, Jake and Chelsea grow closer together, but will he be able to let go and give his relationship with Chelsea a chance?

I loved every single moment of my reading journey! Sustained was everything I expected it to be and more! Emma Chase's writing style is absolutely AMAZING!!! Her stories are always fun, romantic and heart-warming. If you are looking for books written with a male POV that will keep you turning the pages Emma Chase's books are exactly what you are looking for!

Tangled was the first book I read from Emma Chase. Ever since the moment I read it, I have been a fan. How can you resist Drew Evans? You can't!!! I have loved every single book that this author has written, but I did not think anybody would come close to stealing my heart like Drew did. Wrong!!!!!!!!! Oh.my.world!!!!! Jake Becker is in da house and Drew Evans has some serious competition.  If you are a fan of Drew, you will absolutely fall head over heels in love with Jake!

Chelsea and Jake were simply irresistible!! Their chemistry was instant and I loved how their love grew with each moment that they shared. Jake is not a relationship kind of guy, but the time he spent around Chelsea made him want more. I loved that Jake was not perfect. He had his insecurities about love and a long-term relationship. He did not know if he was ready to take that big step in his life, but every single moment that he shared with Chelsea and the kids made him realized that next to them was exactly where he was meant to be.

Chelsea was a fantastic heroine that I loved to cheer for! She was sweet, confident and strong. Her world turned upside down when her brother and sister-in-law passed away. She was left alone to take care of her six nieces and nephews. It's been far from easy, but she would not trade her place for anything in the world. She was easy to relate to and I loved how she handled her relationship with Jake. She made him see that not everything in life is planned and that you have to really fight for what will bring happiness in your life.

This book was filled with amazing banter, steamy moments that will leave you fanning yourself and a cast of characters that will forever have a place in your hearts. The McQuaid clan had a big part in this story and every single one of the children had a moment with Chelsea and Jake. I loved Chelsea and Jake's story a lot, but the McQuaid kids totally stole my heart! They're an entertaining bunch that will keep a smile on your face! It was amazing to see Stanton, Sofia and Brent again. I love catching up with characters from the previous books. Brent will be getting his book next. I'm so excited to read his story! He's a really fun character! :)
