GR's Summary:

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies. Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve. Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do. But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

My Thoughts

Where to begin?!!!   I have so many thoughts running through my head right now. Let me start by saying that The Power was a book that touched me deeply.  It never fails, but JLA's books always get me emotional and make me cry.  They make me smile, they make me happy, and most of all they give me the butterflies.   With the Power, I was turning pages faster then I realized, until I came to the end of the book, only to realize hours had passed, and I had lost track of the time.  This story completely drew me in, and I lost awareness of everything else that was going on around me.  It was the most wonderful feeling, to be so captivated and in love with this story.  The Power had it all; likable, relatable and realistically flawed characters, as well as an excellent plot filled with surprises, beautiful romance, close-knit friendships, and unpredictable plot twists.  Yes, I loved every moment that I spent reading this book.  It will make my list of favorite books of 2016, as well as my all-time favorite books.

This story begins in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Josie, a demigod fathered by Apollo, is residing at the dormitory in Covenant University, a place where magical beings (known as Halves and Pures) attend.  Hyperion and the other Titans are a tremendous threat, and Seth, The Apollyon, as well as Luke, have been given the task to train Josie in hand to hand combat, the use of the elements, and eventually Akasha.

Josie and Seth are involved in a serious relationship.  However, Seth is having trouble fighting the addictive need to feed off of Josie's aether.  Josie and Seth, need to locate the other five demigods and help them unlock their powers.  Then, Josie needs to join her powers with theirs, in order to entomb the Titans back to Tartarus.  Along the way, they will have to face the external challenges of a volatile and dangerously escalating feud between the Halves and bigoted Pures, as well as Shades, Daimons, and Titans.  They will also have to deal with their internal issues, including jealousy, insecurity, and feeling unworthy of love.  Will Josie and Seth be able to rise up to and conquer so many challenges that are working against them, and find lasting happiness together?

The Titan Series is a spin-off of the Covenant Series, and I was delighted to be reunited with this mythology based world, as well as getting to spend time with beloved characters, Deacon, Luke, Solos, Alex Sr., Laadan, Apollo, and most of all Alex and Aiden!  All of these characters had significant parts to play in Seth and Josie's story, as well as some fun and very interesting new characters!  Ms. Armentrout brought all of these characters to life, and it was as if I was reading about real people.

As a couple, I loved the dynamic of Seth and Josie's relationship.  They were always flirting, joking, teasing, and challenging one another.  I was constantly entertained by these two who were so protective, adoring, and thoughtful of each other.  The deep emotional connection, and physical connection that Ms. Armentrout painted between these two was visceral, passionate, and full of swoon.  The thread of loyal friendship was another dynamic I loved in the story.  I felt like I was a part of the group, as these characters joked with one another, supported each other through tough times, and stood side by side in battle.  Many of the threads in this story had themes that readers will be able to relate to in their lives, such as justice, moral integrity, feelings of abandonment from childhood, and working to be a better version of one's self.

My Rating:

I give, The Power, by Jennifer L. Armentrout, 5 Feverish Passion, Magical Peril, Seth's Agapi, Deep and Tender Emotion Filled Stars!  This story ended in a dreaded cliffhanger!  I need the next book now!  I don't know how I'm going to wait a whole year to find out what happens next, but this series has taken the number one spot of my wish list.  As you can see, I think The Power was absolutely brilliant, and cannot recommend it enough.  If you enjoy getting lost in a story filled with magic, Greek Mythology, well liked and multi-layered characters, as well as white hot romance, then this story (and series) is a must-read!!!

THE RETURN Synopsis:

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off... It's been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they've given him have been violent and bloody--which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He's got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy's deal might be, but it's a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all. Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

My Thoughts:

The Return, by Jennifer L. Armentrout is the first book in the Titan Series, and a spinoff from the Covenant Series.  It is a book that I have been highly anticipating, because the Covenant Series is my favorite fictional series based on Greek Mythology.  The Return was everything that I had hoped for, dreamed of, and more.  It was a brilliant, breathtaking, romantic, and passion filled read.

The Return is Seth and Josie's story.  Seth has been taking orders from the Gods of Olympus for a year now.  His newest orders come from Apollo, and are to retrieve college student Josie, protect her with his life, and take her to the University/Covenant in South Dakota.  He has no idea why a human is so important to the Gods, but when he meets Josie, he quickly realizes that there is more to her than meets the eye.

When Josie see's Seth for the first time, she is blown away by his beauty.  However, when he starts talking about Olympus, The Gods, and her purpose in everything, she quickly decides that he is crazy.  Eventually, when she see's and experiences things out of the realm of her reality, she begins to realize he is speaking the truth.  As Seth and Josie begin their journey to South Dakota, they begin to develop deep and passionate feelings for one another, and are trying to survive the danger all around them...

The Return was a story filled with Ms. Armentrout's gorgeous imagination.  It delivered everything that I wish for in a story; relatable and likable characters, an addictive plot full of surprises, romance, passion, intensity, and anticipation.  It is the kind of book you devour, and after you finish it, you beg for the next installment.  I loved Seth in this story.  He shows his vulnerability, opens up to Josie, and every moment they share left me breathless, and eager for the next.  Josie is the kind of woman Seth needs.  She is very nurturing, caring, compassionate, and patient.  She gave him unconditional caring, friendship, and acceptance.  When these two are on the page together, magic happens.

I'm ecstatic that Ms. Armentrout decided to make this title New Adult.  It had all of the imagination, anticipation, and great storytelling as the Covenant Series, with the added bonus of more!  We get more passion, intensity, anticipation, and detailed love scenes!!!  It was a wonderful surprise to me when I got to be reunited with secondary characters from the Covenant Series.  My favorite interactions were with Apollo, Luke, and Deacon.  I love these characters so much, and have missed them.

My Rating:

The Return is a brilliant beginning to the Titan Series.  For readers that love romantic fiction based on Greek Mythology that is fun, passionate, relatable, and addictive, you must read this book.  Also, for those fans of the Covenant Series, you are going to LOVE The Return!!!  I give, The Return, by Jennifer L. Armentrout, 5 Visceral, All-Consuming, Pulse Racing, Seth's Salvation Filled Stars!!!

My Favorite Quotes:

"His touch...I don't know if it was because of what he was or because of who he was, it was like lightening in a bottle for my senses.  From the moment he'd touch me, my body warmed--liquid heat pooled deep in my core and simmered in my veins.  My breathing became more shallow with each passing moment and a different kind of ache invaded my body."

~Josie

"I wanted what I'd never had.  Real companionship.  Loyalty.  Friendship.  Her.  Me.  No third parties.  Just us.  A future. A tomorrow.  Salvation.  And that made my fucking chest compress, because I didn't even know what to do with all of that."

~Seth

Book Excerpt:

This was so not normal. I squeezed my eyes shut, and when I reopened them, Seth was still there. My palms were getting clammy, and in the back of my head, a horrible little voice had picked up in the background. You’ve gone off the deep end. This is it. You’re totally crazy. “Is this real?”

His brows knitted. “This is real.”

It couldn’t be. There was no way any of this was real. I dragged in a breath, but it got stuck, and I looked around wildly as a flutter of panic began in my chest. We were outside, but there were invisible walls closing in. Schizophrenia—one of the main symptoms was hallucinations—seeing things that weren’t there. I could’ve totally conjured up a hot guy who thought he was a polly- poo. “I need air.”

He was frowning. “You have air. You’re—”

“No!” My voice exploded harshly. “I need air. Space. I need space!”

For a moment, he didn’t move, and the flutter of panic in my chest turned into a freaking bird of prey, clawing at me from the inside. He must’ve read something in my expression, because he actually backed off.

Flying off the wall, I took a step to my left and tripped over my forgotten bag. I wheeled around, my foot getting tangled up in the strap. Seth shot forward, catching my arm before I turned into a flailing Muppet.

“Hold on,” he said gruffly, bending over. Within a second, he had my bag detached from my foot. “There you go.”

The moment I was free, I yanked on my arm and he let go. I started backing up, trying to get my throat and chest to unconstrict. “This isn’t real.”

This whole thing was a hallucination. My head had drummed up this Seth. Maybe Jesse hadn’t even been meeting me in the library. Maybe none of this was real. I knew—I knew—it was possible. I’d witnessed week-long episodes where Mom thought we were in NYC or in China, even though we hadn’t left the house. Or when she would talk to people who weren’t there, hold entire conversations with them.

Holding my bag in his hand, he straightened. “Josie—”

I spun around and ran. I ran faster than I ever had before, maybe even faster than Erin could run, and I didn’t look back to see if the apolloanna gave chase. Muscles strained and my arms pumped. People I passed were blurs. I thought I heard someone shout my name. I didn’t stop running when I hit the steps leading to my dorm or when I barreled past the occupied couches in the lobby. I only skidded to a stop once I’d slammed my hand on the elevator button.

I was going crazy. My brain had just shit the bed on me.

Excerpt:

“Is it so hard to say her name?” Apollo asked. “I think a few minutes ago was the first time you’ve said her name since after you two fought Ares.”

My jaw ached from how hard I was grinding my molars.

“Whatever,” Apollo said, his attention returning to the godsforsaken ceiling fan chain. “Don’t talk about it. Be the best issues-boy you can be.”

I took a deep breath. It didn’t help. “I don’t have issues.”

He tipped his head back and roared with laughter. Paintings of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains rattled. “You have more baggage than United Airlines. Cross that out. You have more issues than Medusa, and that woman makes the inside of a cat lady’s thoughts seem like a calming place.”

“I hate you.”

“You wound me straight to the heart, bud.”

My patience was just about the same as that of Cerberus after someone tried to take a squeaky toy away from him. “What about the girl, Apollo?”

He dropped down into the leather chair, his large form nearly swallowing it. “It’s a long story.”

“Go figure.”

That comment went largely ignored. “It all started with your birth, so there’s something else you can add to your mountain of suck.”

I wondered if there was an anti-god repellent and where I could find it.

“We knew the moment you were born that there would be the possibility of a God Killer, since Alexandria was on schedule to make an appearance a few years later. We didn’t know who among us was responsible for your birth, but we knew they’d want to use you for their own gain.”

“This walk down history lane is boring me.” I crossed my arms.

Unaffected, he eased himself closer to the bed, kicked his booted feet up on it, and stretched out leather-clad legs. “The risk of you two joining forced us to come up with a contingency plan in case the proverbial poo hit the fan.”

My brows knitted. There was something wrong with hearing Apollo use the word “poo” in a sentence.
