GR's Summary:

They both have secrets...But whose past will catch up to them first?

Shayna Gillan is on a mission: start fresh in a new state without the small town gossip that has haunted her since her bad girl days of high school.

Carter MacPherson has long been the most together member of his crazy family—until now. With a secret threatening to crumble everything he's worked for, he wishes he could forget the recent past, too.

The last thing Shayna and Carter are looking for is a relationship. It's best to be alone while they sort out their issues.

Friends. That's all they can ever be.

But even the best laid plans always have a flaw, and once Shayna and Carter cross the line between friendship and more, there's no turning back...

The only question left is—whose past will catch up to them first

My Thoughts:

Friend is a Four Letter Word by Steph Campbell was a very angst filled story.  It is the story of Shayna and Carter, told in dual perspectives.  Shayna was raised in a very strict, structured, and conservative family.  Her father is a minister, and her mother agrees and supports her husband, and is the perfect minister's wife.  Unfortunately, Shayna has never felt like she fit in with her family.  She has a wild spirit, and feels like she can't possibly live up to her parents expectations, and be a good enough daughter.  She sleeps around, and sneaks alcohol, which she drinks in excess. Shayna doesn't really have any close friends.  However, she is friends with a girl named Quinn.  They have an interesting friendship.  They both have similar personalities, but Shayna is envious of Quinn's ability to show people who she really is.

One night, Shayna meets Quinn's older brother Carter.  She is very attracted to him, and ends up making an emotional connection with Carter.  For the first time in her life, Shayna feels comfortable to share bits and pieces of herself, when they have a deep conversation.  However, Shayna ends up uncovering a family secret that ends up leading her life in a whole new direction.

Carter comes from a very dysfunctional family.  His parents are well off, respected, and wrapped up in their own lives.  Carter is very close to his younger sister, Quinn, and would do anything for her.  Quinn loves her older brother, and looks up to him.  Sadly, Carter is a very unhappy person.  He is stuck in a boring job, and has a secret (that he is ashamed of,) that nobody knows.  When Carter meets Shayna, he finds a kindred soul.  She is someone that understands him, and they relate to one another.  After Carter meets Shayna, the two of them start texting, and talking on the phone, back and forth.  They are separated by great distance (they both live in different states), and the fact that Carter's secret leads him to tell Shayna that he is not ready for a relationship, and they can only be friends.

Shayna tries to be the perfect daughter, and enters a relationship for 7 months with a man that she has no feelings for, so that she can please her parents.  Eventually, Shayna realizes that she can't keep up the facade of being someone that she is not.  She packs a bag on a whim.  She doesn't have any well thought out plans, but decides she must go to California to sort her life out, and see Carter, so that she can figure out what they have together.  She shows up at Quinn's door to stay with her friend, and is shocked to see that it is Carter's place.  Pretty soon, a complicated dynamic ensues, where is is obvious that Shayna and Carter have deep feelings for one another, but label it as "friends."  Shayna wants more than friendship with Carter, and doesn't understand why he keeps pushing her away, when it's obvious that he wants her as badly as she wants him.  Carter doesn't think he's good enough for Shayna, but he can't seem to stay away...

Shayna and Carter both went through a great amount of character growth in this story.  They both made mistakes, but learned from them.  I can see why Shayna rebelled against her parents considering the extremely restrictive and conservative way that she was brought up.  Her parents really loved her, and she was lucky to have them, but needed to spread her wings, make her own decisions, and choose her own destiny.  Along the way, she acted immature, rash, and selfish at times.  I had a bit of trouble connecting with Shayna as a character.  I felt like I didn't know enough about her, and what I did know, I wasn't very fond of.  As for Carter, I loved his character.  He was trying to make mature decisions and get his life on track.  He was a great older brother to Quinn, and a good friend to Shayna.  I could feel his pain, but again, didn't feel like I knew him well enough as a character.  I thought that the story had a good premise, but I had trouble connecting to the characters, and buying in to their connection as a couple.  I felt like their relationship needed more depth.  The story started off really good, and I was instantly hooked.  However, in the middle it became stagnant, and started to drag a bit.  The ending was a bit rushed and abrupt.  I thought that the plot was entertaining, but was missing that "spark."

My Rating:

Friend is a Four Letter by Steph Campbell, was a story about two people trying to find a place where they belong.  It's about growing up, and the transformation that we all go through on our way in to adulthood. Along the way, we are lucky if we can connect with someone on a deep level, and they can help us though the dark times, with their unconditional support, friendship, and Love.  I give, Friend is a Four Letter Word 3 Growing, Loving, and Living Stars!

My Favorite Quotes:

"I met a girl who understood me without even realizing it.  I met a girl whose presence shook me to my core.  Who did all of those clichéd things like make me want to be a better man, just to have a shot with her."  (Kindle, Loc. 2203)

~Carter

"Friends.  Lovers.  Nothing is ever written in stone.  Lines can blur.  You may screw up.  Everyone does.  When it's real though, your heart allows for rewrites."  (Kindle, Loc. 2631)

~Quinn

"Our home is built on imperfections, craziness, laughter, romance, and love.  And it's exactly what we've both been searching for so long."  (Kindle, Loc. 27310)

Synopsis:

There’s no way Lydia--oldest and most responsible of the tight-knit Rodriguez clan--is going to let her nosy family find out about the uncharacteristic work screw-up that landed her a paid suspension. To keep busy and avoid panic, she enrolls in a life enrichment class. The first guest speaker is a handsome artist with a wicked smile and eyes that melt right through her.

Even the “ice princess” can’t help but feel an immediate spark that lights her blood on fire.

Isaac Ortiz is unquestionably the sexiest man Lydia has ever met. The talented son of a famous Spanish artist, he’s constantly moving from one new glamorous city to another, working if and when the muse visits him.

He also has a stare that makes Lydia’s heart race and hands that look more than capable of making her scream with pleasure. She shouldn’t be attracted to this free-spirit who makes all his own rules--but she is.

There’s just one hiccup....Isaac is nineteen.

Lydia has lived her entire life firmly inside the box, and being with a younger man is definitely outside the safe confines she enjoys.

So why can’t she stay away from him? And why is she seriously considering his proposition to take off to a place she’s never been...just because?

When Lydia is invited back to work with a cleared name, she should be overjoyed.

But the reality is, Lydia doesn’t know what anchors her life anymore...or if she wants to be anchored at all. Should she travel the world with Isaac? Or continue down the road that she’s worked long and hard to pave for herself? Choosing one means losing the other, and Lydia isn’t sure if she’s ready to drift with the current that’s pulling her by the heart.

Liz Reinhardt

Liz Reinhardt was born and raised in the idyllic beauty of northwest NJ. A move to the subtropics of coastal Georgia with her daughter and husband left her with a newly realized taste for the beach and a bloated sunscreen budget. Right alongside these new loves is her old, steadfast affection and longing for bagels and the fast-talking foul mouths of her youth.

She loves Raisinettes, even if they aren't really candy, the Oxford comma, movies that are hilarious or feature zombies, any and all books, but especially romance (the smarter and hotter, the better), the sound of her daughter's incessantly wise and entertaining chatter, and watching her husband work on cars in the driveway.

She is the author of the Brenna Blixen series (Double Clutch, Junk Miles, Slow Twitch), the Youngblood series (Fall Guy, Perfectly Unmatched), and co-writes with the awesome Steph Campbell in the Lengths series (Lengths, Depths, Limits, Ties, Riptides).

Synopsis:

Nineteen-year-old Whit Conrad leaves her conservative Pennsylvania home for sunny California, looking for independence, a fresh start, and a place to stash her grief. She promptly finds a job at a tattoo parlor, a craptastic first apartment, and one friend—Ryan—who is a little less friend, a little more benefits.

Deo Beckett is a soulful surfer with a passion for tattoos and beautiful women. On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, he finds himself living with his grandfather, recently unemployed, and seriously adrift. He doesn’t know much about what he wants out of life, but he does know his current situation isn't cutting it.

When Deo meets Whit, she’s all sexy makeup and fierce, smart-ass fun. It doesn’t take him long to see past her tough shell. And when he gets a good look at what's under all the superficial stuff that usually gets his attention, it leaves Deo wondering if there might be more to life than living fast and free.

Too bad Whit has a past she doesn't plan on sharing—no matter how hot Deo is. She might want him, but she knows better than to let her guard down.

Deo falls for Whit, and falls hard. But everything about her, down to that mysterious tattoo and the way she thrashes in her sleep, tells him that the girl he loves is hiding something. And the more he pushes for answers, the more Whit pulls away.

Having your guard up is one thing, but are the lengths Whit goes to to protect her secret worth throwing away the second chance she has at happiness with Deo?

Do you believe in love at first phone call?

Cohen Rodriquez, Deo’s hilarious, über responsible best friend in LENGTHS got dumped by his longtime girl because he’s ‘not impulsive enough,’ and he's burned up.

But maybe, just maybe, she’s more right than he wants to admit. So he starts to date.
A lot.
But no one really feels like the one. And the more girls he dates, the more Cohen’s convinced she isn’t really out there.

Luckily he has Maren—the girl with the sexy voice who always cracks the best jokes. They’ve been talking daily for a year…on the phone. What started as all work soon blooms into friendship. Then she asks him.

Do you want to meet?

He's scared out of his mind to ruin the one easy, fun relationship he has going for him. But he takes the plunge, and things are just fine, totally easy and comfortable.

Except that they both sense it's not strictly platonic...there is an undeniable attraction and absolute raw chemistry between them…and every time they're in the same room, that attraction gets deeper and harder to ignore.

Maren could be the best thing that’s ever happened to Cohen… Or she could send his carefully compartmentalized life into a tailspin.

Synopsis:

Genevieve Rodriguez is less than thrilled when her older brother’s best friend, Deo, runs off and marries Whit, the girl who doesn't even deserve him. At least that’s what Gen believes. And so what if everyone thinks it’s just a stupid crush? She’s had a thing for Deo for as far back as she can remember.

Freshly heartbroken and downright annoyed, Genevieve is also one ‘D’ away from getting kicked out of school. In other words, life could be better for the rowdy, youngest Rodriquez sibling. Her only hope of passing physics is her quiet, nerdy tutor, Adam.

Adam isn't her type at all. He’s too quiet, too polite, and he’d rather stare at lab charts than bother to notice the bustier top so sexy, it turned the head of every guy in a five-mile radius.
When Adam tells Genevieve that he won’t be back after winter break because his visa is about to expire, the words drop out of her spontaneous, heartbroken mouth before she has the time to think...

“Marry me.”

Thinking it’s a joke, Adam gives Genevieve a firm no. But when the joke turns into something more, all bets are off and all limits are broken. Adam may not notice a perfect bustier, but he can’t resist a good argument. And Genevieve has been arguing to get exactly what she wants her entire life.

Synopsis:

Ties is a companion book in the Lengths series NOT a sequel. It was written as a stand-alone title. The other books do not need to be read prior to Ties in order to follow the story.

When a shiny new convertible arrives for her twenty-first birthday, Hattie Beckett has had enough of her absent dad trying to buy a place in her life. It’s time for him to face her--or get out of her life forever.

She tosses some clothes in a bag, looks up her father’s last known address, and sets her GPS for Silver Stand, California.

When she arrives at a beach-bum paradise that’s totally foreign to her New England upbringing and finds nothing but an empty lot where her dad maybe once lived, her immediate instinct is to pack up her car and head right back to Connecticut.

But she also finds... Deo. The half-brother she never knew she had. He and his hippy-dippy mom insist that Hattie stick around—at least for the summer. And with all of her friends spending the summer abroad, what else does she have to do?

Her ideas about family are blown wide open as Deo and Marigold pull her in with their charm and love. But there’s still a huge question mark where her dad is concerned, and that question mark definitely looms over her ideas about love and relationships.

When Hattie meets Ryan, the college dropout turned competitive sailor, her perspective flips with her heart. Like it or not, Hattie is falling fast and hard for Ryan... even if it’s the last thing that she expected - and the last thing her newly found brother wants for her.
