My Thoughts:
The Soul Series is an epic love story filled with angst, heartbreak, a soul-stirring connection, secrets, and fiery passion. Down to My Soul picks up right where My Soul to Keep left off. This is a series that must be read in sequential order and is exclusively about piano savant, Rhyson, and up and coming star, Kai. These two are separated due to the fact that Rhyson made a horrible error in judgement that resulted in a betrayal towards Kai, regardless of the fact that his intentions were to protect her.
Now, Rhyson is trying to win Kai back, but she is refusing to talk to him. In the meantime, Kai is making a name for herself as she dances and sings background on tour for a popular and well-established singer. Just as it appears that Rhyson and Kai may be able to mend the broken pieces of their relationship, a piece of Kai's past threatens their very happiness as a couple.
Down to My Soul was a very complex and lengthy sequel filled with many ups and downs, emotional angst filled moments, intense passion, and a deep soulmate connection between the main characters. I enjoyed being a part of Rhyson and Kai's journey, as I experienced all of the highs and lows that their relationship went through. I especially loved the moments when Kai reflected on her childhood, the bittersweet memories of her father, and close-knit bonds she had with her mother and aunt. I really felt like I knew Kai as a character, and she came to life for me, as I learned more about her small town Southern roots, and humble religious upbringing.
Rhyson's character grew a lot in this segment. I loved his romantic gestures, the way he worked on bettering himself through therapy, and how he tried to trust Kai, and keep an open dialogue, without trying to control her. Kai made some bad decisions based off of naivety and fear in this segment, and I think that these two have learned from their fair share of mistakes, and grown from them.
The sequel was wrapped up and did not end in a cliffhanger like the first book. However, I hope Ms. Kennedy continues this series, because I would like to get more of an epilogue for Rhyson and Kai's story.
