Synopsis:

Bastard

My name is Carter Reynolds. I was born a bastard and I’ll die a bastard. I learnt it at a young age, and nothing and nobody can change that. I’m on a one-way path of destruction, and god help anyone who gets in my way. I hate my life. Actually, I hate pretty much everything.

That’s until I meet the kid next door. Indi-freakin’-ana. My dislike for her is instant. From the moment I lay eyes on her, she ignites something within me. She makes me feel things I thought I was incapable of feeling. I don’t like it, not one bit. When she looks at me with her big, beautiful, haunting, green eyes, it’s like she can see into the depths of my soul. It freaks me the hell out. She’s like sunshine and rainbows in my world of gloom and doom. I hate sunshine and rainbows.

********

I’m Indiana Montgomery, my friends call me Indi. Despite losing my mum at the age of six, I have a wonderful life and great friends. My dad more than makes up for the fact that I only have one parent. I’m his little girl, the centre of his world. I adore him.

When Carter Reynolds moves in next door, my life takes a turn for the worse. He’s gorgeous—sinfully hot, but that’s where my compliments end. He seems hell bent on making my life miserable. He acts tough, but when I look into his eyes I don’t see it. I see hurt and pain. To me, he seems lost.

I should hate him for the way he treats me, but surprisingly I don’t. If anything, I feel sorry for him. I want to help him find peace. Help him find the light that I know is buried somewhere within his darkness, but, he won’t have a bar of it.

He’s warned me time and time again to stay away, but I can’t. I’m drawn to him for some reason. He’s always referring to himself as a bastard. That may be true, but to me, he’s more like a beautifully, misunderstood bastard. Whether he likes it or not, I refuse to give up on him.

***WARNING This book is recommended for persons over the age of 18 years, due to sexual content and coarse language.***

Review:

This is my first book by J.L. Perry. The cover of this book caught my attention and so did the blurb. After reading a few reviews, I decided to read Bastard. I am so happy I did!!! OMG!!! This book surprised me in the best possible way! I read a lot of NA books and this book was like a breath of fresh air. Indiana and Carter are two phenomenal characters with a beautiful story. Their journey made me smile, swoon and it made me cry.

Carter Reynolds life has never been easy. Growing up without a father figure was hard for Carter. His mom was always there to show her support and love him unconditionally, but he always felt empty inside. People told him so many times that he was a bastard so he eventually started acting like one. When is mom breaks the news that she's getting married, Carter is not happy. His future stepdad is an evil man that makes Carter's life a living hell. When he moves into his new home, the last thing he expected was to fall hard for the girl next door. Indiana Montgomery is everything he does not need. Every moment he spends with her make him feel things that he's never felt before. As days go by, their feelings grow for each other. Will Indiana be able to bring out the best in Carter and make him want more?

Carter started building a barrier around his heart at a young age. Only his mom had a place in his heart ... Until Indi came along. The more time he spent with her, the more she got under his skin. I loved Carter's transformation. I really liked that it was not instant. It took Carter's years to become the man that he is today. He had to make some difficult decisions, but in the end those decisions gave him a reason to live and become the man he was meant to be.

My heart broke for Indi when her world came crashing down. She had a difficult journey, but Carter's love made her stronger. Indi never expected to fall in love with Carter. He was a jerk to her many times, but their chemistry was undeniable. Every moment of their journey together was meant to be.

I loved every single moment of my reading journey! This book was divided in two parts. I have to admit that the second part totally stole my heart! That part is where I felt the deep love between Indi and Carter. My heart is melting all over again just thinking about them! Carter and Indi have grown so much on this journey.

You could feel the chemistry between Indi and Carter from the moment that they met. It's super intense and I was on the edge of my seat for their first kiss. There is a thin line between love and hate. When Indi and Carter crossed that line, it was an explosion of unforgettable moments. I was cheering for this couple from beginning to end! I wanted to them to get the HEA that they deserved. This story left me glued to my seat and I read it in one sitting. I could not stop reading!! The writing style was perfect, the main couple is intoxicating and the cast of supporting characters each had their own personal moments in Indi and Carter's journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a memorable reading journey!

Rating:

I give Bastard, by J.L. Perry, 4.5 sexy, intense, heart-melting, romantic, powerful first love stars!

Although Life is Full of Despair The Key Moments Are What Make Those Struggles Worth While

It is always bittersweet when a beloved trilogy comes to a close. I must say this is one that will stay with me for some time to come. This series has a pretty clear religious undertone, I’m a fan so I loved every bit of it. It was a little apparent in the first two but pretty undeniable in this last installment. No worries though because it isn’t overbearing or preachy but it does add a wonderful element to the book. This is the third and final installment and it was absolutely wonderful. If you have read this series I’m sure your a fan because the writing and world building is just too great for you not to be a fan. This time we find ourselves in the armpit of it all and Maia has to figure out how to bring everyone together. Quickly.

The Story, okay so wow the way the last one ended had me rushing to pick up this installment. Maia is facing the gallows and she has come to accept that as the mediums will. All of a sudden by a twist of fate Maia is thrown into complete chaos where the kingdom is its weakest. Finally admitting that she loves Collier and he loves her was one of my favorite aspects of this book. Unfortunately they are separated once again. Maia fears for her kingdom all she wants is to keep everyone safe and stop an invasion. No big deal right? Lol on the first day of the job nonetheless Maia accepts this as her duty and will come up with a way to see that it happens. There are killers at every corner and Maia will come face to face with each one. The Aldermaston’s and Maston’s are an integral part of this story and we get a good look at the evil that lays within the ruined shores.

The Characters, as you well very know Maia is my favorite then Collier but I also want to mention Maia’s guides. Mainly the Aldermaston of Muirwood turned Chancellor he was a key element in who Maia was to become as a leader. The medium is spoken of quite frequently and it is this medium that has lead Maia to the throne. The High Seer aka grams was selfless and did everything in her power to see to Maia’s happiness. Maia’s hunter who made me smile every time he spoke I loved his personality and dedication to do the right thing. Oh boy now for the hard one…This guy made my heart bleed…The assassin he was also one of my favorites because this guy does some ruthless things and hurts Maia but for some reason my heart broke for him. There are quite a few more but just know that the interactions of all of the characters made this story rich with depth and emotion.

The End, as I mentioned before this is that “make it or break it but regardless i’m going to miss the heck out of these guys because we’ve come so far” moment that always gets me. I’m pretty ecstatic to report Wheeler does a wonderful job. Through cunning and forethought Collier sets everything up perfectly in order to see that he and Maia have the type of ending their characters deserve. The reader gets their HEA, not without some struggle but everything comes together remarkably. All of the kingdoms show up to the end and the medium’s power is accepted by all. Maia has grown so much and she accepts all of life’s challenges with grace and power. The only thing that could have made this ending better is an epilogue that went out farther than the one we got. All and all I’m very glad I took a chance on this series and I highly recommend others do the same.

My Rating
4.5 Trusting your heart and acting on emotions of love rather than fear. A promise long ago made coming together to bring peace to the nations.

He is permitted free time to roam the grounds under heavy guard. Synopsis:

Being fearless has never looked so good . . .

Aubrey Evans needs to get her life back on track after her father is indicted for embezzlement. All she has to do to hightail it out of small-town Tennessee is save up money for college tuition and steer clear of hard-muscled boys on motorcycles. Yet there's no ignoring someone like Zion. A knight in black leather, Zion looks like every bad idea she's been told to avoid, but she can't resist him. Whenever she's in trouble, he's there. Appealing as his rough exterior may be, it's the protective, principled man beneath who tempts her like crazy.

Zion knows Aubrey doesn't intend to stick around. She claims to want only friendship, but he senses there's a naughty girl hiding on the inside—one whose intense desires match his own. For now, he'll be patient and play by her rules. But he knows it's just a matter of time before he weakens her resolve.

As they join forces to figure out who's behind a local crime spree, it's clear that the danger goes deeper than Aubrey guessed. And when she needs someone tall, dark, and undaunted to keep her safe, Zion intends to be there—now and always.

My Thoughts:

I couldn't wait to read Undaunted, because I am a huge fan of MC Club Romance.  This is the first book that I've read by Ronnie Douglas.  It is the beginning of the Knights in Black Leather Series.

Aubrey Evans moves to Williamsville, Tennessee, to live with her beloved 65 year old Grandma Maureen, a strong, fun-loving woman, and unconventional grandmother.  She leaves Oregon after her father is indicted for embezzlement, her mother files for divorce and consequently, she lacks the tuition to resume her college education.  Aubrey is tired of being put in the middle of her parents drama.  Therefore, she makes a plan to get a job, save up money, and attend the local junior college, until she can afford to move back to Oregon and return to her college.

However, life gets complicated when there are break-ins and vandalism in her grandmother's neighborhood.  Then, she meets the sexy and very tempting MC Club enforcer, Zion.  Aubrey plans to stay away from him.  She refuses to stray from her plan, and get involved with anyone; especially a criminal.  Yet, circumstances put Zion in her path time and time again.  Will Aubrey be able to resist this sexy bad boy? Or, will Zion eventually wear her down?

Undaunted fell a little flat for me as far as MC Club Romance is concerned.  I enjoy learning about the MC Club sub-culture, and I would have liked to see more about the rules, norms, and everyday practices of club life.  I really liked Zion's character.  He became a reformed bad boy, and was willing to do what it took for Aubrey to give him a chance.  He was charming, and very good to Aubrey, Ms. Evans, and his MC Club.  However, Aubrey was a frustrating character.  She kept changing her mind about whether she wanted to pursue a relationship with Zion, and I just wanted her to make a decision and stick with it.  She also wasn't the best decision maker.

The plot was steady.  I was curious about the criminal activity in the neighborhood, and to see how everything would play out between Aubrey and Zion.  I enjoyed secondary character's Noah (Zion's cousin), and Ellen (Aubrey's friend.)  The two of them seem to have a past history, which really piqued my history.  I loved Noah's charm, and the way Ellen was a strong, independent, and confident lady.  She knew her worth, and demanded respect.  I think Noah and Ellen would make a really good story.

My Rating:

I give, Undaunted, by Ronnie Douglas, 3 Sweet Motorcycle Club Bad Boy Filled Stars!

Guest Post:
Ronnie Douglas talks about music and writing

Music is how I get into any mood. Writing romance is part of writing most of my books, so I have a few years of trying out different strategies. Often, though, I just turn on my music and let go. I don’t need a special room. In fact, for the sequel to Undaunted, I wrote the sexiest scene in the book while I was at a layover in Iceland. It made me giggle out loud at one point to realize that I was in a lounge with all these businessmen in their suits, and I was curled up in a chair sipping my tea and writing a sex scene.

My default was Lana Del Rey, but I use music to tweak my moods, so depending on what mood I needed, I’d swap out to a specific song and just play that song on repeat for the emotion I needed to call up. A few of the ones I used were:

A.  BeyoncĂ© “Crazy in Love”
B.  Rihanna “Pour it Up”
C.  Rihanna “Rude boy”
D.  Missy Elliot “Get Ur Freak on”
E.  Leon Else “Cheap Hotel”
F.  Train “Bruises”
G.  Charlie Worsham “How I Learned to Pray”

Book Excerpt:

“You’re safe, Red,” he said in a softer voice. “I’ll take you to grandmother’s house.”

He watched me, obviously waiting for something.

The best my drunken brain could offer was, “The Big Bad wolf eats Red.”

He paused, grinned, and patted the seat. “You’re too drunk for that too.”

I blinked at him. Then his words sunk in, and I gasped. I hadn’t meant that, but now that he planted the idea in my mind, I couldn’t speak.

“You’re safe with me,” he promised, and then he patted the tiny seat behind him.

I wanted to tell him that I didn’t want to be safe, not after he’d planted such forbidden images in my mind. I yanked my mind out of the gutter and climbed onto the motorcycle, wrapped my arms around his waist, and tried not to shiver. I shouldn’t like the way he talked, but I did. I liked the whole package: the rescue, the insinuations, the motorcycle.

Maybe alcohol and fumbled petting with Quincy just skewed my judgment so severely that Zion seemed more tempting than he actually was. I wasn’t sure. I also didn’t think it mattered. By tomorrow, I would be too sober to think about kisses or any of the other things he might be good at doing.

He pulled my arms tighter around him, holding my hands together on his very taut stomach. It was a little embarrassing that being on the back of his Harley was doing far more for my libido than all of Quincy’s—and every other man’s before him—effort.

“Hold on, Red.”

Tempting, inked and highly addictive. Alex is all that and more…

I’ve made a lot of mistakes – ones I’m not proud of, and definitely ones that have left their marks both mentally and physically.

Things got lonely; I got lost in my own fucked up mind and in the end it left me fucked out of my mind and unable to fight – or at least win. That life’s over for me and I’ve moved on.

Six months into tattooing at Blue’s and already I’m the most wanted and sought out tattooist. My biggest clientele consists of women.

They come into the shop, end up in my bed and we both come out happy. It’s been my release since I’ve stopped fighting. It’s become part of the “new” me.

But when Tripp reappears in my life, I can’t deny the fact that I would do anything for that girl.

So when she asks me to move in with her and her ‘boyfriend’ – our other childhood friend – I never expected for things to get so fucked up and twisted that I would find myself only more attracted to her by each passing second or wanting to protect her from everything that isn’t me.

I have worked so hard over the years to suppress my feelings for her but when I find out that her and Lucas have been having an open relationship, I have the strong urge to rip his heart straight from his chest – to destroy the very thing that keeps him breathing.

What I didn’t expect was for Lucas to ask what he did. For him to ask me to do the one thing I have secretly longed for since I was old enough to know what the need was. The second thing I never expected was the look of need that I saw in Tripp’s eyes when he asked.

One night of free passion could change our lives forever.

I never said that was a good thing either…

I hear my door push open, but I’m too tired to acknowledge it. It can’t be any later than seven thirty in the morning, so I just stay lying on my stomach.

I hear something get set down on my computer desk before I feel the bed dip down next to me. It must be Lucas saying goodbye before he has to get ready for work.

Groaning, I reach out and grip his upper thigh, surprised at how hard and thick it feels in my hand. I guess I never really paid his legs much attention before. “Ughhhh… my head. Why did you give me all those shots last night? I feel like hell.” I run my hand up higher, stopping just below his package. Why does he feel so good right now?

“You look like hell too,” Alex says playfully.

Shocked, I let go of his thigh and grip onto the sheet to cover my bare breasts, while maneuvering my way to my knees. I almost forgot that Alex finally moved his stuff in last night. Man, I really must’ve had a few too many shots.

“Crap, Alex. I thought you were Lucas.” I reach up with one hand to cover my face as my head starts pounding. “I guess I drank a little too much last night.” I pull my hand away and squint from the light shining in my room. “I almost grabbed your dick, Alex. You weren’t even going to say anything?”

Grinning, Alex stands up, and I can’t help but to notice how sexy he looks, wearing only a tight pair of boxer briefs. Not only do I get him as a roommate, but now I’ll also have to see him running around in his underwear. Talk about a distraction.

“Just a few too many.” He runs his hand through his wet hair. “And I’m not going to stop something that feels good. I’m sure your hand was enjoying it too much. Now sit up straight.”

I watch as Alex walks over to my desk and grabs a plate and a glass of something. My head hurts too much to even pay attention to his words. “What’s this?” I ask as he sets the plate on my lap. “You made me breakfast?”

He sets the glass down on the nightstand beside me and I peek over to see that it’s orange juice. “Yeah.” Without another word, he walks into the bathroom. I almost think he’s going back to his room, until he emerges a few seconds later, holding something in his hand. He places two pills into my hand and crosses his arms over his chest. “Ibuprofen. Take those and eat your food.”

Not questioning him, I do as told. The first bite of food causes me to smile at its deliciousness. “Oh my goodness, Alex.” I point down at the toast before taking another bite and quickly chewing it. “This is absolutely delicious. Wow.”

He smiles. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

I toss a piece of egg at his head. “Cocky much?” I laugh as he grabs my hand and takes a bite of the eggs that I was just about to eat. “Very much so.” He chews the eggs and rubs a hand over his stiff abs. “What you doing before work?”

“I was going to stop by and visit Tara. You want to come with?”

He nods his head and starts backing away to the bathroom. “Yeah. I’m sure she misses the shit out of me.”

I laugh, accidently spitting the mouthful of toast out.

“Seriously?” I cover my mouth and smile. “It’s only been like a week. Trust me, she does not miss you.”

He flashes me his dimples. “We’ll see about that.” He gets ready to walk out of my room, but stops and grabs onto the frame. “Oh and Lucas left for work already. He said he’ll see you around one.”

Figures he wouldn’t say bye. “Alright… thanks.” I take a sip of my orange juice. “I’ll shower after I eat and then we can go. Sound good?”

“Everything out of your mouth sounds good.” He attempts to catch the egg in his mouth as I throw it at him. “You have a horrible aim. I’m going to go downstairs and work out for about twenty minutes and then take a quick shower. I’ll shower downstairs so I don’t slow you down.”

Eyeing his body up and down, I swallow, remembering the dirty sounds coming from the downstairs shower last night. I tried so hard to block them out, but it was pretty hard to miss. I have to admit that hearing Alex fuck, both turned me on and bothered me at the same time. A part of me wanted to imagine myself taking her place, while the other part wanted to pretend that I wasn’t imagining it at all.

Then Lucas came up here saying dirty things to me about Alex… once again, turning me on so bad that I practically knocked him down and jumped on his dick. We had wild, meaningless sex, and then I sent him down to his room. Sleeping in the same bed as Lucas is something that I haven’t done yet. I’ve only slept next to Alex, and for some reason… I want to keep it that way for now.

“Sounds good. We can take your truck.” I smile while taking another bite of food.

“You just can’t get enough of my awesome driving, can you? You like it fast and wild.” He winks. “I like that.”

I point my fork at him. “Just hurry up so we can get going.”       “Sure thing, babe.” He dodges out of my room, leaving me grinning from ear to ear. He always has a way of making me smile. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him.

Review:

Victoria Ashley always delivers a hot page-turning reading journey! I read her Walk of Shame series, earlier this year, and I could not wait to meet the Carter brothers in her Pain series. I'm always looking for my next ''Falling for your best friend'' book. No matter how many times I read these kinds of these stories, I always want more! Victoria Ashley's new book, Something for the Pain, is a panting melting journey that will you fanning yourself!

Tattoo artist, Alex Carter, is a ladies' man. With him, what you see is what you get. He makes no promises to deliver hearts and flowers.  If what you are looking for is a one-night stand you will never forget, he's your man. The only woman his heart beats for is his best friend Tripp. He has been keeping his feeling for her a secret, but when he moves in with her and her ''boyfriend'', Alex is determined to show her how he truly feels about her. He craves to own her heart and soul, but will Tripp's relationship get in the way of getting what he wants?

Like I mentioned before, this is one hot page-turning reading journey! The chemistry between Tripp and Alex is blazing hot!!! Their fun and flirty banter keep your cheering for them to just let go and give in to temptation! Alex was introduced in Get off on the Pain, which is the first book in the Pain series. I loved him from his first appearance in that book and I could not wait to read his story! He's a fun character and he's one hell of a dirty talker, just like his brother Memphis! Tripp was a great heroine with a bubbly personality that you can't help falling in love with!

Best friends to lovers stories are my favorites! I loved everything about this story except one thing ... Lucas. He's Tripp's boyfriend and a total A**. I really did not like any of the scenes with him, especially one of the scenes that was extremely important for Tripp and Alex. I really did not like him and the role he played in this story. I could not understand why Tripp was with him. I already knew from the blurb that he was going to be a part of this story, but I did not expect for him to act the way he did.

Overall, this story kept me turning the pages until early morning. Even if the storyline was predictable, I liked the way the author wrote this story. It was great to see Memphis and Lyric again. Victoria Ashley's characters are fantastic and memorable! If you love best friends to lovers stories that will keep your glued to your seat and that will melt your panties, Victoria Ashley's new book is exactly what you are looking for!
